    Pros +

    • Everything is perfect. Service is extremely impressive.
    • Gardens, staff, service, food, hospitality, hot spring baths. Service was 10/10. Unique experience at a very traditional ryokan. We loved it!
    • This is my first time experience in a Ryokan. The food and service are exceptional. The hotel is beautifully set in a Japanese garden providing natural hot springs in the public Gold Palace and Silver Palace. There is also a private tub in my room. If you want to have a experience like enjoying a time capsule and try how traditional Ryokan works this is a must try. But if you are a modern style lover then this is not your best choice

    Cons -

    • Facilities are little dated but part of the charm
    • Our multi-room accommodation was lovely, but it was quite cold in many spaces that were not heated by mini splits.
    • Really, the ONLY way this stay could've been better would be laundry equipment/facilities, or at least laundry service if the space can't accommodate.Slightly tough to get to, Google Maps doesn't have the right 'spot'. If you see a stone wall, keep walking to the left (uphill) until you see an entrance area with a huge 'parking lot'. I think a photo somneone posted on Google Maps will provide more details.

Hotel Gyokutei is a beautiful, peaceful property. The hotel staff were very attentive to us and made us feel very welcome. The evening meal was outstanding, as was the breakfast. It was an easy walk into town for shopping or catching the bus. The private onsen in our room was delightful. The public baths were well maintained, clean, and so soothing.

Our multi-room accommodation was lovely, but it was quite cold in many spaces that were not heated by mini splits.

Very friendly staff. Spacious room and wonderful facilities. Both private and public baths use hot spring water. I would recommend requesting the hinoki/cypress wood bathtub. The public baths will alternate between men and women depending on time of day. Excellent dinner and breakfast, though there is a strong (traditional) seafood influence, so this might be a deal-breaker for people. Examples: fish liver, oyster meatball, uni (sea urchin), fried whole fish (horse mackerel).

My wife and I were on our honeymoon. It was a wonderful experience. The room was clean, spacious and even better than the pictures from the website! The staff was amazing. Although we had a pamphlet with clear instructions, it was still very helpful having someone tell us what the dos and donts were around the room especially since we had a private onsen. The food was exceptional. We were served two courses and both were well cooked and seasoned.

There is a steep climb to the ryokan. If you have a lot of luggage or if walking is difficult, you may want to take a taxi. The recommendation from one of the reviewers was really helpful: when you get to the retaining wall, walk towards the left up the hill. The staff were welcoming from beginning to end. They stored our luggage for us, and the suitcases were delivered to our rooms by the time we returned. The view from our sitting room was the koi pond, just as it is shown in the photos. My family enjoyed the private onsen in our room. The women’s onsen was spacious and relaxing. Dinner was served in our room and took about two hours. We thought the food was beautifully prepared and delicious. Those who do not like seafood or plant-based dishes might think otherwise. It was a lovely traditional ryokan experience. We would have loved to stay longer if we could.

A short walk from the train station. Very attentive and nice staff. Delicious dinner and breakfast. Exquisite gardens. Cozy onsen in our own bathroom, plus two larger, semi-outdoor onsen pools that connect to the woods in the mountain.

There are only 6 rooms so it is almost never available.

The staff are incredible, patient even with clueless foreigners mucking up tradition unintentionally. The grounds are beautiful. The food is amazing but perhaps not suitable for all palates.

The only complaint was the bed was a little bit too hard for my partner. It’s a traditional style home, so those seeking sleek or modern may want to look elsewhere.

They ground are beautiful. The staff very friendly and helpful. I wish we had stayed one more night. To much to pack in one day . Did not get a chance to enjoy the Onsen as much as I wanted. The serving of the meals odd a ritual. Never have I experienced sunshine like this. Wonderful meal for dinner and breakfast. Wonderful to get a taste of the Japanese ale life.

    Everything was wonderful.

The inn very quiet and peaceful. The grounds are very pretty and the layout is comfortable and gives you privacy. Our room attendant Yukie is a lovely and helpful person and made us feel very welcome!

This was hands-down the highlight of our trip to Japan. The service was amazing and the facilities are beautiful. Our room was super spacious for two adults and two children, and felt so traditional while at the same time being extremely comfortable. The in-room meals were excellent and just added to the immersive experience of staying in a ryokan.

Everthing. Hospitality, onsen, true ryokan experience, meals

Our family had an incredible stay at this ryokan, and we can’t recommend it enough! From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warm hospitality that made us feel at home. The atmosphere is deeply authentic, with beautiful traditional architecture, tatami rooms, and a serene ambiance that transports you to the heart of Japanese culture. The service was impeccable—every staff member was attentive, kind, and went above and beyond to ensure our comfort. The highlight of our stay was the phenomenal kaiseki meals, which showcased the finest seasonal ingredients and the true artistry of Japanese cuisine. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious.

Spacious and beautiful traditional Japanese house - the gardens are so nice and relaxing! Enjoyed the dinner and breakfast experience

    10BinhPosted on: 2-21-2025

Amazing hospitality! I recommend getting the option with traditional breakfast and dinner included. It is an amazing value. The onsen facilities alone was great but the introduction to the culture is priceless.

My family stayed in the Miwa Room last weekend. We had a wonderful time in Hakone for three days. The public bath was very clean, and the meals and accommodations were perfect for our family of four. The staff member who took care of our family was very kind. My wife was able to communicate with her in Japanese, and we were very grateful for her hospitality. We were very sad that we didn't have a chance to say goodbye to her on our departure day.One thing that could have been better, perhaps due to cultural differences, was the dryness of the room. Like many Japanese accommodations, the room was dry, so we ended up sleeping with a damp towel on the drying rack.

We had the most amazing experience at this ryokan! It was well worth the money. We spent 3 nights here and the staff were absolutely amazing! They made us feel like royalty. Yes the rooms are traditional and older looking but it was spacious and clean. The food we had every day was just Devine. Even our children loved their kids meal. What an experience for the whole family. It is very seafood based which we loved. Every meal was different which was great. Breakfast was served at either 8 or 8.30am and dinner we had an option of 6 or 6.30pm. Dinner would take nearly 2 hours but we didn’t mine. Both meals are served in our rooms. The onsen was a bonus experience for both adults and kids. The ryokan is located on a hill but in walking distance to Hakone Yumoto train station. A bit tricky with luggage but for day to day sightseeing, it was fine.Highly recommend this ryokan experience. We are so sad to be leaving but grateful for the experience.

Could do with some hooks to hang jackets and towels up.
