Pros +
- Great private onsen. Convenient location to public transportation.
- Beautiful room, private outdoor onsen, comfortable bed, lots of amenities
- Our 2-night stay at Hotel ZAGAKUKAN (7-9 Dec 2025) was fantastic. We chose it because it fit our budget while still looking classy and cozy, and it certainly exceeded expectations! The superior twin room (23㎡) was perfect — slightly more spacious than the standard double (21㎡). I absolutely loved the room setup; the beds were super comfy and snuggly, providing a lovely, subtle ryokan vibe despite not being a futon on tatami. The hotel truly spoiled us with amenities and toiletries! We were provided with everything: yukata, pajamas, bathrobes, a full set of skincare products, and even a facial mask. While check-in is late at 5 PM, the late 1 PM check-out balanced it perfectly. The highlight, however, was the private indoor onsen bathtub — that was the whole point of our booking. In terms of location, it's a short 7-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station, and there are plenty of dining options nearby. For the price, this stay was an incredible value and super duper worth it.
Cons -
- Be prepared for a small flight of stairs to the lobby with your bags.
- Was a bit pricy
- I’m not sure our experience could have been better!

A great hotel in a great location in Hakone (a few minutes walk to the train station). The room was amazing, fully equipped, and with a warm local atmosphere, including a private onsen. The staff was kind.
Spacious and comfortable room, amazing private open air hot tub
Was a bit pricy
Beautiful hotel that felt very private and serene. The room was thoughtfully supplied with water, four types of robes/pajamas and toiletries. Amazing wood bathtub with running hot springs mineral water.
I’m not sure our experience could have been better!
This room was excellent! - Very friendly staff. They held our luggage for us until we could check in.- The room is very spacious and clean.- Comfortable beds! We slept in because we were so cozy.- The attached private onsen was incredible for our aching feet after exploring all day. You can adjust the temperature with cold water, but it was perfect for me. It's open air, so you can see a bit of sky. - Close to the station and bus stop. There is a bus stop just around the corner and more bus stops at the station. The station took about 10 minutes to walk to. - The room has dim lighting, but it is possible to open the window shade to allow more light in if needed (the window sort of looks like it can't be opened, but it can!) The lighting did not bother us, though.
- Check-in was a bit late; however, I'm sure they need more time to clean with the attached onsen, and checkout time is later as well. Just something to make note of for your travel plans! It was not an issue for us since they were able to hold our luggage. :)
1. Your own Onsen in the room.2. Clean.3. Staff is polite. 4. Good location and close to public transportation.
1. Check in at 17:00.
Location was nice and quiet. It has a Zen feel to the hotel.
Very dark interior and 5pm check time!
Tiny hotel with brand new Semi traditional room - Shoes off, futon beds that were on a step so it wasn't too difficult to get out of them, traditional style dressing gowns. The bathroom was within the bedroom (separate toilet) so I could watch tv from the lovely wooden onsen bathtub - gorgeous! Plus some of the nicest creams and lotions I had in Japan. In fact everything felt like it was good quality.
No View. Quite a small room but fine for a couple of nights. No breakfast on offer but plenty close by to choose from.
The hotel and the staff were very helpful. We loved the room we stayed in and the location was very convenient.
Small boutique hotel. Great location 5 minutes from the station, very nice rooms (large for Japan) with great shower and very comfortable beds.
State of the art Japanese ryokan style hotel. We had a private sushi dinner at the restaurant (we were the only customers) the chef and apprentice were talented, friendly and the meal was wonderful.
We’d heard of a bath on the roof, but never were able to explore it. We didn’t ask…
Private outdoor covered hot tub was the best! The hotel ambiance is different: dimly lit, understated. The number and quality of robes, towels etc provided in the room was quite impressive. Helpful staff
The styling and facilities in the room were excellent. The private outdoor onsen was delightful, even in the rain.
Restaurant option was limited mid week. Hotel restaurant was closed on night and full on the other, but there are some excellent options just around the corner.
Short distance from train station,Amazing sushi restaurant in the hotel ,Close distance to attractions ,All amenities listened present
We enjoyed our stay in Zagakukan in a room with private onsen. Our room was stylish and beautiful (maybe a little bit small), it had all necessary facilities, beds were comfortable (with a smallgap in between). Late check-out at 1 pm was also nice.
We could not find how to translate tv from Japanese to English. No breakfast, but for us it was fine.
The room is easy and clean! I like the yukata of Zagakukan.
No stairs from the entrance to the reception, not good for travelers with luggages. Everything was very dark and it feels heavy.
The Hotel Zagakukan was an indulgence at the end of a Japanese sight seeing tour. The private open air onsen was amazing and a welcome way to wind down each day. The room was luxurious and well appointed. The staff did all they could to make our stay enjoyable.
Nothing to mention.
The onsen on the roof was great. Located close to train station ~7min. Beds are comfortable.
No ramp for bags at hotel entry. Later check in than other hotels but has later check out. No ice machine, microwave, laundry. Stairs down from onsen are very slippery when wet.
