    Pros +

    • The authentic Japanese experience. The room, the setting, the bedding seem to scream out from the Shogun series. The garden outside of the room window is spectacular and having a private spring bath in the room was quite an experience.
    • historical onsen, great atmosphere, amazing food, kind staff
    • The staff were so nice and the food was exceptional. Our room was very relaxing and we had a great view of the river.

    Cons -

    • All the furniture looked antique and therefore needed to be careful with them. The wooden floors in the hallway were also old therefore you could hear the squeaks from the staff and guests passing by, which was a bit annoying during bed time.
    • our room unfortunately did not come with bathroom but common bathrooms are always very clean
    • The futons were very firm so it was difficult to get comfortable and have a full relaxing sleep. The bathroom needed cleaning, especially under the sink. There were a number of things that could be improved with minor maintenance, such as paint touch ups, minor repairs.

Host amazing with my minimal japanese, but if you don’t understand she does try to google translate (sometimes comes out weird but context and gesturing helps a lot)

Beside the authentic Japanese onset ryokan, the staffs were friendly and attention to details without asking. My family really enjoyed the stay and we sure will come back next time we travel to Hakone

Amazing Staff, wonderful traditional meals and traditional onsen. We loved the experience and the historical feel. Akiko was an amazing host for us! We were in Sakura 2. The only one with a private onsen connected. I think the other rooms probably had a toilet and sink in them (a good thing to check) which probably would be fine. The river view was really nice!!

The rate is much cheaper on the hotel website.

I was looking for an authentic ryokan experience, and Fukuzumiro delivered perfectly. The atmosphere was amazing—creaking wooden floors, sliding doors, paper walls, the sound of the river outside, sleeping on futons, and enjoying meals while sitting on the floor. The onsen was a highlight too—we tried both the private bath at night and the public bath in the morning. What impressed me most was the staff. They went out of their way to make us comfortable and even customized meals for my wife, who is pescatarian and prefers cooked dishes. The lady who served us patiently explained every dish, even using Google Translate to be sure we understood. It all made the stay feel truly special and memorable.

I wanted to share my experience at Fukuzumiro while it’s still fresh in my mind, especially since my initial rating didn’t post while I was at the airport.Fukuzumiro embodies the essence of a traditional Japanese Ryokan, and their service is truly exceptional! The meals are an absolute highlight, boasting some of the best dishes I’ve ever enjoyed. Ayumi and the entire staff treated us like we were royalty, thoughtfully explaining each food item, skillfully answering our questions, and providing outstanding recommendations.Ending the day by falling asleep next to the Haya River was simply unforgettable.

If you're seeking a hotel that offers all the amenities, including an in-room bathroom, this may not be the right choice for you. However, the small inconveniences you'll encounter are well worth it for the overall experience of staying here.

Staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was amazing overlooking the river. Very spacious and comfortable.

Wonderful Ryokan with many onsens onsite. The food was great the service impeccable and the ryokan takes you back in time.

A beautiful facility. Very traditional yet comfortable and clean. The meals were amazing and the service was impeccable. The onsens were unique and easy to access. Our assigned staff member made the stay so memorable and this was one of the highlights of our trips to Japan. Thank you everyone at Fukuzumiro, especially Mami, for making our stay so special.

I loved everything!! It’s so unbelievably beautiful!! Built in 1890 and renovated in 1910, it’s full of historical charm and beauty. It feels like going back in time. The onsen are nice and hot and really pretty. So nice that you can have private or shared baths. My room was gorgeous and comfortable, overlooking the river so I could sleep to the sound of rushing water all night. The food was incredible. One of the best meals I’ve had in Japan. They accommodated my celiac disease with an incredible gluten free meal, and also catered to my vegetarian/ pescatarian preferences. I also enjoyed excellent sake, matcha, and traditional sweets that were gluten free. East ten minute walk from the train station. Location is quiet and it was convenient to catch the bus to the open air museum from here. Excellent staff and service. My only regret is that I couldn’t stay longer!

Going in, we knew this was an old ryokan from the 1910s. We knew the toilets were 'shared' - the hotel staffs were great. Friendly and courteous. We got the corner river-view room (gorgeous!) The staff was nice enough to get us extra blankets because it rained hard that day and the temperatures dropped. Hot springs were nice (they have 3 private baths you can reserve - one was out of comission but we got to enjoy the 2 and one big bath (shared)Seasonal food was tasty (a lot of dishes) for dinner and breakfast. It was an OG Ryokan experience.

We knew the toilets were shared but we didn't know how 'far' it was from the rooms. Also, the sink outside the toilet only had cold water so we had to go to the main shared sinks for hot water (to wash your face, etc)The toilets were 'bidet' but very small so might be a challenge for anyone taller than 5'9".

The ambiance is amazing--old, sprawling, wonderful view over the river. The food is delicious--dinner was a very tasty spread, breakfast light and just what you need to start a day in Hakone. The staff were friendly and helpful; we loved the baths.

Fascinating experience to stay in this ryokan. Our hostess was really lovely. We used one of the private spa pools. We stayed in a room with a river view. The Japanese evening meal and breakfast were beautifully presented.

There were only 2 comfortable chairs in a room for 4 people so we couldn't all sit and enjoy the river view at the same time. The bathroom was shared with other rooms.

Great historical place. Room was very nice and the various Onsen really good too.

Property is really a bit run down and would need a bit of renovation for the price. Food is good but not outstanding.

We arrived before the check-in time and the staff person (lovely old man) greeted us nicely, spoke decent English and was very accommodating. He arranged for our luggage to be moved into our room when ready and gave us forms to fill out about our dietary requirements, preferred meal times and heights for our yukatas. Afterwards he gave us a map of Hakone and showed us the nearest train station (6 min walk) and bus stop (2 min walk), the recommended sightseeing areas/attractions and transport modes/routes to use with the Hakone Freepass. We returned later in the afternoon to check-in and was shown around the main facilities of the ryokan (bathrooms and private/publics spas) and how to book a spa timeslot. Our room attendant showed us our room and supplies/amenities/equipment and how to use them. She explained how to correctly wear the yukata and bathing etiquette in the spas. During meal times, she also explained what the dishes and ingredients were and how to eat the food. Although the room attendants spoke limited English, they were able to effectively communicate to us and other guests at the ryokan. They spoke Japanese into Google Translate and the app spoke back the translation into our preferred language. Since we also spoke limited Japanese, we were actually able to converse with our room attendant and have a more meaningful interaction. The staff provided exceptional service and made the trip memorable. The quadruple room we stayed in was spacious, beautiful and clean. The staff prepared our futons to sleep in, gave us fresh towels and yukatas to wear and made sure we were comfortable. The food we had for dinner and breakfast tasted fresh and delicious. We also ordered sake and umeshu to complement our meals. We would love to stay at Fukuzumiro again in the future.

Super typical ryokan. They have a different public and private onsen that you can use 24h. The dinner was served in the room and it had a lot of dishes with both meat and fish. For the breakfast you can choose between Japanese and international. We chose the second one and it was good and various. They supplied kimono, towel and all the necessary. Futon are very comfortable to sleep. The atmosphere is super authentic . I wish I could stay more.
