    Pros +

    • The private onsen in the room was fantastic.
    • Fantastic staff, fantastic meals, great value for private onsen room. The shuttle van from the station comes right up to the bottom of the parking lot which is super convenient. It’s convenient to get down to the bus stop or up to the cute rail train. The rooms are extremely clean and well kept.
    • Friendly staff and nice, tasty bf and dinner

    Cons -

    • The beds were very uncomfortable. Do NOT try to get from the bus stop up to the ryokan with roller bags it will require a trip up a mountainside with very uneven stairs. Despite that it is in a really great location to explore from! If they replaced the carpet in the stairs the hotel would look cleaner.
    • Actually, there is a shuttle bus service provided from the main station to the hotel. However, when I asked the hotel staff prior to the trip, they repeatedly told me that there was no shuttle bus available. As a result, we spent a lot of time trying to find a way to get to the hotel, especially since we had a lot of luggage and neither public buses nor taxis were able to take us there.
    • The provided towels were small and thin. The best access is via taxi, as the property is located up a steep hill; however, it is a short ride to the nearest station.

We really liked the layout and amenities in our room - both modern and traditional. With high ceilings, two generously sized futon mattresses, a small desk and multiple places to sit, it felt spacious and comfortable. The highlight is definitely the open-air onsen on a private terrace with views of the trees. The temperature can easily be adjusted with the provided cold water tap. They provide yukata to wear as well. There are free drinks in the lobby, as well as a small gift shop. The meals were fantastic and included beef, fish, noodles, an assortment of small bites, and a flight of desserts. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese assortment. Everything was fresh and tasty and very filling. The staff even went above and beyond packing up some of our meal to go when our child needed to go back to the room in the middle of dinner.

The provided towels were small and thin. The best access is via taxi, as the property is located up a steep hill; however, it is a short ride to the nearest station.

Very clean big rooms. We had the one with private onse. Very good, tasty restaurant

The onse is on all the time. In the night the gentle bluster disturbed me, so I did not sleep well. But for others in the family it was not an issue.

Beautiful place, friendly staff, amazing food. Both the evening meal and the breakfast were amazing. Immaculate rooms and the private hot spring fed bath was a delight.

The overall experience in at the location was splendid. The helpfulness of the staff, cleanliness of the rooms & both private & public onsen were fabulous. The spread at the breakfast was also good.Overall a Must Stay for tourists planning a visit to Hakone

The approach to the location at night is a bit tricky

Orginal look and feel but mattresses pretty hard. Rooms look good but were pretty noisy. Natural bathing was ok. Breakfast was below expectations… staff was nice

    10EmilyPosted on: 3-12-2025

Big spacious room with pretty views. The private open-air bath was clean and used constantly. The hotel lends yukatas to wear around the property and they’re cute and comfy. Food was delicious and super filling.

I wish there was free water alongside the free soft drinks and alcohol.I was confused getting to the hotel since there’s 2 stations named Tonosawa. I took a bus to the hotel the first night and almost got hit by a car crossing the street lol. Use the local train station instead

    9ColleenPosted on: 1-22-2025

The rooms were lovely with the outdoor balcony onsens. Included meals were fabulous for dinner, very traditional.

Directions on how to arrive would have been helpful. If not driving, it can be difficult

    10JeannettePosted on: 12-4-2024

We had one of the onsen rooms and it was fabulous, very clean and new, exactly like shown in the pictures. The booked dinner was amazing as well, they were able to accommodate special wishes and it was a very luxurious experience.

The location is a bit remote, we found it easiest to get there by train - the station is about as far away as the next bus stop, but you don't have to walk up as many stairs and have a more even surface for rolling suitcases.

Good onsenBig room, nicely designedVery good breakfast

    Thin toilet paper

We booked one night in a room with a private bath. The experience was fantastic. We were welcomed by friendly staff at the reception, who explained everything in detail. You can pick up a yukata that you can wear at all times in the ryokan. The room was spacious, with two futon beds and a 3-tatami space for lounging after a bath. The terrace with the bath was closed from others' view by a wooden fence but you could still see the greenery nad trees. The dinner was superb. We ordered an extra sashimi set and it was almost too much to eat in one sitting. The signature grilled sea bream was delicious beyond telling. You can walk to the ryokan from Hakone-Yumoto station - although the hill may be a bit steep for some and it may be very difficult with a large luggage.

We only regret not staying longer. Tonosawa Ichinoyu Shinkan is a fantastic place!

    9CrystalPosted on: 5-13-2024

Beautiful onsens - both the one in room and the shared facilities. Excellent dinner — classic ryokan fare but a bit modern

    8VerityPosted on: 5-5-2024

The rooms are quite traditional and quaint and it is in a very quiet area. It is a little removed from the main area, but it is a 15 minute walk away from town or you can get the train up, and then it's a 5 minute walkWe didn't try the public onsen, but had a private one in our room and it was lovely. We ended up having dinner there and it was an incredible meal for great value in our opinion

The room was a little dusty, but that was our only complaint.

    9TriciaPosted on: 4-25-2024

The personal rotemburo on the room balcony was relaxing. The dinners were outstanding. The staff was very friendly.

The walk from the Tonosawa bus station to the hotel was arduous with baggage. It seems to me the hotel could put instructions how to get there from above so one could walk down instead of up.

Friendly staff, private onsen, lovely food for dinner.

Location wasn’t very easy to reach with luggage without a taxi. Ok once there.

    7KayPosted on: 4-6-2024

Food was lovely and they were able to cater for my partner who doesn't eat fish and gave him special options (you just need to tell them when booking). Private onsen on the balcony was lovely, overlooking some cherry blossom.Staff were really friendly and despite the language barrier did their very best to help you.

For westerners, not having a shower was a bit of a shame as it's more difficult to wash your hair in 40 degree water. But as long as you are aware of this in advance, it's not a problem! The location is tricky to get to from the train station without a hiking pack as it's up a very steep path with steps. You need to be fit and healthy to carry the luggage up, but if you come in a car this is not a hassle.

Traditional Japanese experience . Beautiful surroundings . Loved the Japanese baths

Was a bit of a hike to train station and taxis a bit hit and miss. Would have been lovely had the staff had enough English to explain the food and kimono etiquette etc
