About
With Norman cellars dating back to the 12th century and secret passageways in some of its rooms, this inn offers historic accommodations in Rye. It has a huge open log fireplace in the bar, and an award-winning restaurant. Rebuilt in 1420, The Mermaid Inn has been visited by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Prince Edward, as well as celebrities and artists. It retains many beautiful, traditional features, including a secret stairway hidden behind a bookcase. The restaurant has been awarded two AA Rosettes for its fine French and British cuisine. The lounge bar was once frequented by local smugglers, and has a large wooden beam supported by stone pillars. Each room at The Mermaid has charming features, like wooden paneling or carved beds. Rooms all feature a TV and private bathroom, and some have picturesque views over Rye.

- Room, with good shower and blackout curtains. Good stock of tea & coffee. The staff were able to adapt the breakfast menu.
Cons -
- Lack of space for residents to sit and drink, there were two lounges but we were told to leave our lounge due to people reserving it, the bar and other lounge were full, we ended up leaving the hotel to find somewhere else to eat and drink which I find unacceptable due to the price we paid , the breakfast was average and glad it was included in the price

Leaving the hotel.
Beautiful setting, friendly and helpful staff. Great service and breakfast. Clean warm rooms with lots of hot water.
The parking was a bit tight but that is Rye and at least there is a car park which some properties don't have. Also the road signs were a bit confusing as to whether you could drive up the street that is not the fault of The Mermaid Inn though and they were super helpful.
Incredible building with a truly unique history, the photos didn’t do it justice. Loved the lounge areas downstairs and fantastic dinner.
Wasn’t a problem as we were very aware we were staying in an old building, but walls are thin, so may be something to be aware of if you’re a light sleeper.
The Inn is beautiful, a wonderful location and has interesting history
It may be an old building but was the bathroom also from the 1100s... Frankly shabby. The rest of the Inn was gorgeous and so the bathroom was severely lacking. The terrible plastic runners instead of sealant made it feel extremely cheap
Wonderfully authentic - a true experience hotel in the heart of what may be England's prettiest town. Staff friendly and efficient.
Would have liked a hair dryer in the room and a less droopy showerhead, but these are very, very minor quibbles. You do not visit this loc for top-tier hotel tech.
Great breakfast and hotel staff
Shower not fit for purpose. Intermittent hot/cold water. They did move me to another room. Again the bathroom was very dated. Decor of rooms needs updating as do all the curtains etc
Good breakfast in a lovely room. Our room was spacious and clean and the staff were very friendly.
What a place. I loved the ambiance, the creaking floorboards, the lounge areas, the food, and the hospitality. One of the porters recognized us out on the town of Rye and was kind enough to say hello!
The atmosphere of the Inn is absolutely unique and definitely worth staying overnight to experience it. The staff are very helpful and the breakfast was delicious, even the vegan option was good!
Unfortunately our room was also a fire exit(?) which meant that we had two large green glowing signs in our room, an ugly fire escape just outside the windows, and constantly flashing red light on the ceiling alarm. Of course they have to have signs, but there must be a more subtle way that doesn't make it hard to sleep at night!! I honestly also don't understand who they hired to do the interior design - our room had the most hideous velour shiny red fabric for the bed and the curtains (which also were so thin they let the light through).. and everything, especially the bathroom, was done in the cheapest materials imaginable, with a clingy shower curtain and no shower pressure, with all the pipes and plumbing on full display (the toilet seemed to have two u-bends??!) plus a wall hairdryer which looked like it'd been there since the 1980s! Honestly the missed opportunity to create something really magical and modern, working with the incredible background of the building - it's just tragic really how awful the design choices are. And shocking that they are charging so much given that I've paid less to stay in a 4 star hotel with exceptional design. This was room number 20 so we paid £250 for the four poster bed.
Room was comfortable and clean, walls were a little thin but only to be expected in a property of this age. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to return. The breakfast was exceptionally delicious. We just loved the whole stay.
Nothing really. The hotel occasionally smelt of smoke but this was to be expected in an old property with open fires so just added to the feeling of history.
To be fair, We both had an amazing experience! building is beautiful, you feel wrapped in history, breakfast and dinner was out of this world and excellent value for the price, able to forget the car as there is everything to hand locally, having worked in Rye had not stayed before, had to book an extra night to believe it was all real! staff are exemplory!
I spoke to reception regarding the water feature in the courtyard outside our room window which was timed to turn off at 11pm, they said next time make a request and they will ensure it runs all night! (helps me to sleep!)
An Inn full of history and character run by very friendly and cheerful staff who took pride in their work and location. We look forward to making a return visit.
Not booking for a longer period.
The hotel was very cosy, warm and not at all pretentious. Car parking was very welcomed, albeit it a very narrow entrance, but understandable with the size of today’s cars. The breakfast was delicious and bar prices were extremely reasonable. Thank you for a lovely stay at your hotel.
We had a bit of a smell in our bedroom during to the shower trap. The staff were very helpful and even offered us another room, but this room was far to creepy for my liking so we stayed put. The housekeeper opened the big sash window for us and clean out the already spotless shower trap! It didn’t spoil our stay but maybe this needs attention.
Great quirky property nice rooms and good breakfast
Price point a bit steep
This place is steeped in history it’s like stepping back in timeLovely breakfast
Lack of water pressure in the bath/ shower?
Beautiful, historic in center of town
Historic also equals a little dated in rooms but still comfortable.
Loved the position , near to everything which was good for us as we didn’t have a car. Staff were very friendly and helpful.Delicious food. Loved all the beams and creaking, sloping floorboards
Quiet expensive, our room was small and compact although the bathroom was huge, would have been better the other way around
The location was excellent in the centre of Rye. The entire experience from check-in to check-out was exceptionally smooth.
The shower could have been better.
