Pros +
- Location, welcoming , friendly staff.Well maintained building, with memories of days gone by
- The food was very good. All staff were very friendly.
- Convenient location for work
Cons -
- The weather.
- Nothing really. The hotel is starting to look a little bit tired.
- The room was tired with furniture that should be in a charity shop, the window was filthy, peeling paint and mastic in the bathroom, corroded taps, worn carpet. The bar was dismal, food expensive £21 for sausage egg and chips and the gammon was inedible. Staff dealing with a large group, clearly a solo traveller was just a nuisance. Peeling rendering on the building.

Beautiful property, amazing staff, superb food and service! Would definitely visit again and highly recommend!
A bit too many spiderwebs all around, in need of a refreshment but still cosy and beautiful.
The bed was very comfy, staff nice , lovely fire and. atmosphere Location good close to Ennerdale Lake .Restaurant food and bar very good.
Bath didn’t work Had packed lunch but appeared pricey for what was in it and no fruit .
This hotel is brilliant. I know the outside looks a little dated and could do with a lick of paint, but for a property built in around 1830 I would like to look as good at that age.Firstly I would like to thank Rachel for helping us on Sunday 26/10/25 when we checked in at the hotel. We had an extra guest, my friends grandson (who, with 2 others where meant to be camping and hiking about 30 miles away from the hotel), he was feeling too poorly to do the hike and we needed to see if room was available for him. She was an angel and a room was sorted for him.Again, she was a tower of strength when the weather made it impossible for my friends grandsons to complete their hike and nights camping, so we drove off, picked them up and brought them back to the hotel. Rachel was impressive and managed a little magic and another room was sorted for the 2 young lads. SO A VERY BIG THANK YOU RACHEL.Now about the hotel - when we arrived there was a roaring fire in the lovely old reception area giving a welcome atmosphere to the vestibule area. Comfortable chairs around the fire allowed guests to chill out and relax. Our rooms were lovely. Each room was spotless and complete with all you could need.Bar Area - A lovely comfortable room, with leather sofas and tables to relax by. Hot drinks as well as alcohol and soft drinks are available. We asked if sandwiches could be purchased and Rachel provided a wide selection to choose from. They were tasty and filling.Restaurant - it was a limited menu that night, but what we chose was excellent. The salted caramel tart with chantilly cream was delicious. We finished the night in the bar enjoying conversation with other residents who were there for the weekend.A comfortable night’s sleep followed, the beds were so comfortable, only issue for us was we were in room 18 and you could hear the door to reception opening long into the night. We were right next to it.
Great location and helpful staff
Unfortunately the quality of the Gluten Free food available dropped throughout the week. By the last night of my stay no Gluten Free starters were available and only one Gluten Free main was available which had been previously disappointing. In general Gluten Free alternatives (except for bread/toast) were not available and instead items were removed from dishes so in effect I received less to eat than a guest who was not Gluten Free.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The bar area was cosy.
The hotel is in quite a state of disrepair, we had an executive garden room, the door leading to the garden was only fixed to the door frame by the middle hinge, both other hinges had detached. The tiles in the bathroom were all loose and cracked, with sharp edges, the grout was either missing or crumbly and mouldy. I cut my foot on one tile going to the bathroom in the night. When returning from a hike in the early evening there was no hot water. The shower cubicle was incredibly mouldy. Eating in the restauraunt felt awkward, we are both vegan, and had notified the hotel in advance, to check they had vegan options. However, there were no vegan options on the menu, so we had to ask for the them, the list provided had 4 dishes and was labelled as "Vegan and Vegetarian" with no note on each dish to say which were vegan and which were vegetarian, so we had to ask for clarity again, and enter a larger discussion about what that meant when we were told they were all both which they clearly weren't, and then also had to ask if they had any vegan wine. By this time we noted people in the vicinity making comments and sniggering, it just wasn't a comfortable experience. The food was fine, but we didn't go for breakfast while we stayed as we didn't want to repeat the experience.
The Building is badly in need of lots of renovation but couldn’t fault the food or room for what we paid
Beautiful building, lovely gardens, sitting outside with a glass of wine was very relaxing. There is a good bar inside too. Evening meals were excellent, really very good indeed - there was a great chef at work. The staff were very good and kind, they handled a difficult situation we witnessed with care and empathy.
There's not much around, the nice-looking nearby pub on Google closed years ago. The room was a bit basic, the TV tiny, but fine really. The packed lunch was overpriced and underwhelming. Breakfast wasn't very good at all.
The food and real ale was good. The room was fine and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful
No plug point near the kettle! We got around it by relocating. It looks a little tired on the outside but inside is fine.
Wow! Hidden Gem. First of all I would like to say a massive thank you to Rachel. I was there to visit my Dad's grave. She was so understanding and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. She went above and beyond to make my stay very memorable, even upgraded my room to make my stay as comfortable as possible. Her kind words and understanding at a difficult time made it easier to relax. Thank you Rachel, you are a credit to the hotel. All the staff were polite and friendly, other hotels could learn from the staff here how to treat guests. Everyone was made to feel special and not just another booking. The food was amazing and tasted delicious, with great choice of menu. I would highly recommend this hotel. The warm welcome and relaxing atmosphere, really is a credit to the hospitality industry. Thank you all so much. You're amazing,
Old rambling guest house. Loved our stay here. Fascinating history of the building and full of interesting collections.
Room was warm and tidy
The toilet did not flush properly and the shower was barely a trickle. The soap dispensers would not work either.
The old style of it property. We stayed in the suit with the 4 bed poster room. Was beautiful.
Friendly staff. Excellent food
Hotel is a little tired. Needs refurbishment
Beautiful old mansion with original fittings
Outside not cared for, feels sad
The staff were very friendly, the room was very comfortable. The evening meal and breakfast was excellent.
Staying in a "Bespoke " Hotel was a first.
A little "fawlty towers" at times. Hotel is old and needs an upgrade. Was a little worried about electric wiring and having to plug jug into multiplug on the ground!
FriendlinessComfort bed and roomRoom was lovely
Shower - couldn't get any cold water to come out, was just hot to hotter
