Pros +
- Location staff . Felt was run on a shoestring poor chef overstretched .
- We were wonderfully greeted and made to feel comfortable and cared for during our whole stay. The age and quirkiness of the building and rooms meant we had a unique experience and yet there was no sacrifice on the quality of the furnishings. The view of the sea is worth the money, even on a cold summer's day. And both the double & twin rooms were lovely. The breakfast and dinner were also fabulous. Would recommend booking your dinner ahead so you don't miss out!
- Excellent location. Top chef. Great food. Quiet area. Decent room. Short walk from seafront. Nice garden.
Cons -
- Bar felt like front room , restaurant awful no curtains or decor just curtain hooks . So basic but expensive. Eggs at breakfast undercooked and warmish . Advocado tasted mushy and was horrible . Burger wasn’t nice fish was ok . Kettle didn’t work télé was all pixelated as so old . Window was couldn’t be put on a latch . Lady serving breakfast was then washing up very overpriced and poor value very disappointing for a special weekend break.
- The water pressure was weak in the shower. And with the historic houses you are never going to get big rooms. But if you embrace this as an opportunity to experience some genuine seaside accommodation, you will not be disappointed.
- The carpet could do with a makeover.

The conservatory and views from there were the best part of the building
Very disappointed. Not happy with the one night we spent of which we had 4 nights booked and left.
The bed was very comfortable with a nice view of the coastline outside the window. (Room11)Full English cooked breakfast was very nice.
The hotel fixtures and fittings need updating as they look quite old and well used. The room was like a furness during a hot spell.Quite expensive for what you get, but that seems the norm nowadays.
Excellent breakfast cooked to order, excellent staff, good location, lovely views, excellent restaurant and free parking
No wardrobe or dressing mirror. Having to request toilet paper replenishment
Fantastic hotel, our room came with sea view and balcony. Well situated, friendly staff and wonderful veggie breakfast.
Great breakfast, friendly and helpful staff. Our second visit to the Mariners and definitely not our last!
Friendly staff
For our early morning departure (before the hotel's restaurant opened and any staff members would be on duty) we were promised a pre-packed food package would be left for us in the restaurant's fridge. But when we left we left in the morning we discovered no such food had been left - if we had not been promised the food, we could have purchased something ourselves to take, the evening before. A small point perhaps, but following through on service items such as this make the difference between a good hotel, and a mediocre one.
Good food, comfy bed, great views
The breakfast was excellent and the room was clean, spacious and comfortable.
Good location in walking distance from the high street and the coast. Considerable hotel parking lot across the street. Staff is very friendly. Good traditional breakfast
See view is very distant and on the side. I would not call them as “rooms with sea view”.
Location was good. It's a steep walk back up from the town. Free parking and WiFi. Breakfast lovely, good choice and cooked fresh. Are there one evening and again food really nice.
Very friendly staff and delicious breakfast
The facility in the room is a bit dated and a little bit cold at night so it doesn’t feel quite good value for the price paid. Having said that, super friendly and helpful staff and lovely hot breakfast. So not too bad.
helpful friendly staff 5 star breakfast
The staff were helpful and accommodating and also knew the area well. The rooms were spacious and very clean, the shower was powerful and spacious.
The staff were very apologetic for the lack of Gluten free options at both dinner in the evening and breakfast too despite advertising gluten free options were available on the menu, and I specifically asked if they could cater for Gluten intolerance there were no none dairy options available either.
Warm welcome, friendly staff, clean room, very well cooked poached eggs with tasty mushrooms. Within a ten minute walk of town. Easy parking in an otherwise difficult location
Room 14: shower room (tiny) door opens onto the bed, cooking smells overwhelming until around 9pm, loud music from what could have been the pub along the road, finished 11.15 pm…..take your ear-plugs! The television wasn’t really watchable with its poor erratic signal. Only one very hard working yet delightful staff member dealing with a full dining room at breakfast.
The proprietor was very friendly. Nice bar/lounge area and quite a bright dining room.
The room wasn’t as clean/dust free as it could have been. There was no wardrobe. The beds weren’t particularly comfortable and there were no mattress protectors or even fitted bottom sheets. No socket to plug a bedside light in.The breakfast choice was poor, as there was no fresh fruit or muslei or granola. The veggie sausages tasted like cheap meat ones and the grilled tomatoes were hard….most unpleasant.
The Mariners looked promising from the outside and it was helpful having parking nearby. The staff were helpful, the bed comfy and the breakfast OK.
They were obviously having building work done and we felt we were staying on a building site. Everywhere there was building rubbish - in the hotel, in the garden, on the balcony outside our room. There was also a smell of cooking fat everywhere.
Clean and comfortable, friendly staff and very nice food. The breakfast was very good
