Pros +
- Breakfast and dinners were lovely, and the setting of the inn is just beautiful. Staff was helpful and friendly and we enjoyed our stay very much.
- The Hotel sits in a beautiful location, really friendly staff who were very accommodating. Our room was lovely and comfortable. I would highly recommend this Hotel.
- Very clean. Nice staff in reception and in the bar. Good hospitality tray
Cons -
- sink in my room was very small and made it difficult to do simple things. The room I booked for my brother mentioned a king size bed and it was not. His room was nice but not what we expected.
- Bedroom furnishings could do with updating also a bit weird bathroom and cupboard doors didn’t fit properly and hard to close. We also didn’t think the food was as good as last time
- I left a phone charger behind in my room. Phoned hotel about it, they said they would get back to me. I have heard nothing. Food ok but not great. Some of the carpets on stairs. And corridors. Either very worn or very dirty.

Location
The standard of food at dinner was not great given the price. Ambience of restaurant questionable in that the tables are so scarce and far apart plus the lighting needs looked at. We would have preferred to sit in the bar which was lovely but when we arrived it was as hot as a sauna! Breakfast buffet would benefit from fresh options rather than tinned fruit etc.
Excellent breakfast. Excellent location if you want to be in the middle of nowhere. Half hour drive to Kirriemuir the nearest town. Excellent evening meals.
Communication can be improved. Glen Clova is in a poor signal area for Wi-Fi. I could only communicate with my family via WhatsApp and email. My room (Dreish) did not have a landline telephone. My mobile has Wi-Fi assist but not Wi-Fi Calling which the staff use. Also on 7/9/2024 I was attending the Braemar Games which is a 2 hour drive from the hotel. I had booked myself in for dinner but the staff had said to ring the hotel if I wasn’t going to be back in time. I rang the hotel several times and nobody answered! The hotel was fully booked for dinner that evening including my table but the staff were too busy to answer the telephone! Also I didn’t realise when booking through booking.com that my hotel booking did not include breakfast. Something to consider! Also don’t book the Mayer room in the steadying, the room looks out onto containers for the laundry! I didn’t accept that room luckily the Dreish room was available all week. It was in the steading with a view of trees and a glimpse of the mountains in the background.
Glorious position, ideal for hiking along and around the glen. Fabulous staff who made us feel like part of the family. Good food and very comfortable room
Beautiful peaceful location, comfortable rooms and lovely staff. Will return
The location is perfect for the stunning hike up to Loch Brandy: you'll find the track a minute or two behind the hotel! The staff were super friendly and helpful with everything, and went out of their way to accommodate my gluten free diet.
We stayed in the modern and warm complex of steading rooms - facilities were great and room had an outlook into the woods. The restaurant/bar was lovely and welcoming. Staff were very helpful in rectifying a small glitch in our payment. Superb location as a base for walks in the glens.
Just two minor comments: 1. The hydro-electric system was a bit loud from our room - we were expecting a quiet haven in nature. (But it was simply noticeable, definitely not offensive!) 2. Someone came and cleaned our windows (outside) while we were still in the room in the morning which was a bit of a surprise - I'd suggest they leave this job for after checkout time!
Beautiful location and ideal for those wanting to experience walking in the Angus Glens. Very helpful staff and attractive accommodation.
Not much wrong - It was August and our steading room was a bit warm - the window is round a corner and didn't open very wide. Not a major issue really! If booking again I would ask for room in the hotel.
A great location although do be aware that you really are in the middle of nowhere. I went to Forfar beforehand to get some fruit and snacks for my walks etc. Pretty much everything else was just wonderful. I loved the peace and quiet in my steading room and all of the staff were excellent.
The only thing I didn’t like was that there was a small wall mounted TV in the bar blaring out music on my first night. I found it quite irritating but had my iPad and headphones anyway. The next evening the music was switched off which was brilliant.
Great base for exploring Glen Clova. Lovely food and good range of beers. Friendly staff.
Breakfast and evening meals were both lovely. The hotel and staff were pleasant and all areas were clean. The views were breathtaking!
The bar and bothy area were great fun. The Asian-style meal with rice and chicken was excellent.
Booking arrangements for evening meal could have been better. 19:00 (and 19:15) are too early for me.
The situation among the hills is very special. Our room in the Steading was nicely furnished and all we could have expected with a very comfortable bed, and tea and coffee etc. available. As both of us are not too good on our feet we appreciated being able to park close to our room. We had an excellent meal the evening we arrived and an equally good breakfast. The staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. We certainly plan to come back again!
There was nothing.
I was welcomed by the Staff from the first moment I walked in and was able to leave my car in the carpark before check-in time while I went walking. All the Staff were friendly and helpful. The evening meal was delicious and Staff attentive.
What an amazing spot! Wonderful facilities with bars and private relaxing spaces. The staff were incredible for the whole stay. Our room had a large bathroom with a bath and separate shower. Staff were very happy to chat when we wanted to and nothing was too much trouble. The kitchen was extremely accommodating with special requests from us foreigners and the food was great. We wanted to extend our stay another night but it was fully booked. Lots of great walks around the area too. Would love to come again one day.
Great hotel, bar, food and staff.
Having to leave.
Beautiful location, good facilities and staff.
Long journey from nearest main road. Better for a long stay, but we only planned one night.
