About
Located in the quaint village of Bramber at the foot of the South Downs, The Tollgate offers free parking, and free Wi-Fi . The spacious bedrooms at The Tollgate each have a private bathroom and tea/coffee facilities. Rooms also feature a flat-screen TV with Free View channels, a hairdryer and trouser press. It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to close the doors of our restaurant while we reconsider what we can realistically offer to our guests and the local community. We are offering a Full English Breakfast each morning. Just outside Steyning, The Tollgate is a 20-minute drive from Brighton and Hove. Surrounded by West Sussex countryside, there are many popular walks and cycle tracks nearby.

Cons -
- I have contacted Tollgate so have Booking.com and no one has replied. I have a full report sent to Tollgate Hotel but this is summarised below. I have photographic evidence of all mentioned below.Room smelt of split milk. Windows had to be kept open all the time.Staff are not on sight 24 hours or at book in. Could not speak to anyone face to face about issues. No TV as it would not connect to Wi-Fi or normal ariel.Room not serviced after first night even though sign taken off door and put back on tray in the room with dirty mugs. The sofas where dusty and dirty.Cob webs and spiders in the room.Lights bulbs out of action, 4 in total. This includes a cracked light in the bathroom. The shower had a screw as the lever for the temperature adjuster. Also when filling the bath the water squirted upwards against the tiles when filling the bath. The mattress topper was too small for the bed.I had to plug in the fridge on arrival but was loath to touch the plug afterwards as the outer shell was broken for fear of electrocution. The Wi-Fi kept dropping in and out depending what part of the room you were stood in. As 3G was then the signal stretch it was difficult to use our mobile phones.Bath mat provided as a hand towel.Bath tap squirted up at the tiles not in the bath.Room advertised for supplies also shown as locked so could not get replacement coffees and room not serviced. The whole stay was not what I paid. What was advertised was not provided for. The room was well below was was expected. I have requested a full refund of £227.29 but Booking.com and myself and had no reply from The Tollgate Hotel.
- The rooms were booked for my husband and his elderly father. On arrival they were dirty and not usable, beds not changed, towels not changed, no toilet roll, no facilities to make a drink, TV not working, no staff on site to assist (remote check in). They left and found alternative accommodation in Horsham but my father in law was very tired by the time they were able to get settled. We had found out the day before that the hotel was due to close for good on the day of planned check out, and had we known this prior to payment would have cancelled. The hotel were aware that an elderly person was staying so disappointed that they didn't inform of us of the issues they were obviously having. We have been refunded but very poor experience.
- Lack of staff for check-in at night. Minor issue

Good value, quiet and comfortable with ample free parking. Nicely cooked breakfast.
Lack of staff for check-in at night. Minor issue
Room was large and very comfortable although my wife said that it was slightly dust and could have been cleaned more intensively.Bed was excellent and the bathroom was very good.
Cleanliness of the room could have been improved however, it was acceptable for our stay.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was a decent size and comfortable.
The place was rather empty and there was nowhere to eat in the hotel in the evening which was a problem as Bramber is a small place.Parts of the hotel looked a little tired.
The breakfast was good
It was dirty, cold and no staff on desk
The hotel itself was comfortable and clean. Parking was easy and the breakfast was very pleasant. We also liked the concept of the online check in and sharing of codes.
Our arrival was a bit of a disaster. We'd been sent to wrong room information and so when we let ourselves in the rooms were not clean, in fact they were in part of the hotel that is supposed to be closed. We had to call someone to help us but there was a further error even after they moved us to the correct part of the hotel as an hour after settling someone else let them into our son's room. Very little by way of an apology was offered which was frustrating given the situation.
Large room.
No hot water, unsafe as the doors were left open (I couldn’t close them), light bulbs not working, bathroom not clean.
Good breakfast. Comfortable room with pleasant view of the village
No staff available when I arrived. Problem with bathroom sink. Also needs some car charging spaces.
Room was good and was clean, spacious and comfortable
Breakfast was OK but the cooked breakfast could have bee better, The waitress found it hard to communicate in English. It was edible, therefore not complaining
Never again . Would not...
No contacts for problems or emergencies.Poor entrance lighting , dark passages and trying to operate room pass key pad in the dark.Hot water was not available, so unable to shower. Plug in sink did not hold the tepid water. Tea, coffee tray never restocked. No TV Reception. When a way from the accommodation rang hotel and was told signal is poor because of location. No internet connection. Mobile phone signal very very week and would not be of help in an emergency as no land line availableNO STAFF for advice and no hotel information or instructions in room. Where are Health and safety? This hotel is an accident waiting to happen
Comfortable quiet good breakfast
TV did not work Problems with WiFi
The location
It was all dark, no lights on in the entrance when we arrived, no staff, no bar open, the rooms were dated and basic and not how shown on marketing photos with no hand soap or shower gel. It was clean for most of it but dirty sheets from a previous guest were left in my room along with cleaning products. One of our friends rooms was very poor and basic and quite frankly none were worth the price. Breakfast wasn’t good either. Hard poached eggs, watery scrambled eggs, rude staff who were very abrupt.
The room was a big size, the bathroom had been recently been refurbished and had a very big spa bath and walk in shower which were both lovely, especially after a day spent standing in the cold. Most doors had the key code, so we only saw one member of staff at breakfast, but the breakfast was well cooked and very tasty and quick. Parking was plenty and we walked to Bramber castle int he morning which is over the road.
The rest of the hotel is a little tired, but I would book again if in the area.
Quiet. Easy parking. Digital Checking in went smoothly despite being unmanned. Good access to coast and Arundle Castle. Comfy wide double bed. Clean walk-in shower. Unmanned but easy access advice by manned phone.
Shower waste was blocked so water in tray rose and lapped over. It seemed casual if front door was left open or not if you returned late.
Good location
No one on receptionAwful greasy and time expired breakfastNo room cleaning serviceAwful bathroom arrangement. Modern but not user friendly With no bath
Convenient location
The room issued hadn’t been cleaned and although we were given an upgraded room which appeared fine, upon our late return that evening, we found we had no toilet rolls and the toilet seat was soiled!
There sadly was little to love about my stay at the Tollgate. The location was admittedly very picturesque, with Bramber village itself for sure being worth a visit.
Where to begin? First and foremost, expect very minimal human interaction if you plan on staying at the Tollgate. Everything from check-in to check-out and "customer service" is done either online or via phone. However, make sure to use your own phone because the one they provide at reception isn't guaranteed to have signal, despite them explicitly saying to use that phone to reach them. I arrived pre-checked in to find that either somebody else was in my room, or they had given me access to someone else's room filled with a half-eaten loaf of bread, underwear in the drawers and empty shoe boxes. Besides being incredibly awkward, this is also a huge security risk and should never have happened. When finally reaching the invisible staff members at the Tollgate via phone, they were admittedly understanding and apologetic. Apparently, they gave me an upgrade for the inconvenience. However, I have never once considered a room with a stained towel laying over the sink as an upgrade. I'd dread to think what the standard service would be like. The facilities were virtually non-existent, as was the breakfast they provided. It had the appearance of being half-eaten by the time it arrived to my table with the plate quite literally half empty. Apparently you could ask for more, but I'm really not sure who to have asked and how, given that the phone line was out of service. All in all, whilst the staff that I managed to speak to upon arrival were polite enough I simply cannot see how they justify the cost of the stay versus the services they deliver on. Would not go again.
Bed was comfortable !!
Mould on the ceiling in the shower, no picture on the TV, and no where was the WiFi code displayed, so no WiFi. And no staff around to ask questions !!!
Nothing. It was the most appalling run down and cold hotel I have ever visited. Nothing worked tv dirty glasses no condiments. I am absolutely disgusted and completely dissatisfied with the whole experience. An awful hotel and have stayed in a £10 hostels. An absolute nightmare that was stressful unpleasant and simply below standard. The breakfast was mediocre at best.
