About
This 16th-century coaching inn has played host to both Dickens and Darwin. With beautiful, Elizabethan decor, The Lion is set within the heart of historic Shrewsbury. The Lion is a Grade I-listed building, and guests can relax by the Tudor fireplace. The Pickwick Papers were written by Charles Dickens at the hotel itself, and it has also been visited by the 19th-century Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, as well as the legendary violinist, Paganini. Rooms offer unique furnishings with renovated decor and original features. Private bathrooms are included in each room, along with a TV and tea/coffee facilities. The many historic streets and shops of central Shrewsbury can be reached within 5 minutes on foot. Pride Hill and Darwin shopping centers are both less than 10 minutes’ walk away, and Shrewsbury Rail Station is a 15-minute walk from The Lion.

Pros +
- The staff - extremely helpful. Breakfast reasonable.
- Central location. Onsite parking. Helpful staff. Historic building 600 years old. Request for no footboards was accommodated.
- The room was very large, plenty of space for our travel crib. The bed very comfortable & overall very clean. The bedroom was lovely & warm. The shower had amazing pressure. We really enjoyed our stay & loved the history & charm of the hotel. The staff were also very kind & a young man on check out even let me see the famous Charles Dickens Suite before we left.
Cons -
- Room freezing. Hotel generally very very cold. Room tired. Bathroom tired and not good for the older generation. No sugar. Tea making facilities not convenient. No black pudding for breakfas. Charge of 10 to check in early, even if the room was ready.
- Bathroom fittings getting tired. No in house food options.
- The overall hotel is run down. The carpets are threadbare. Our curtains in our room had rips & the decor is outdated, however the old charm of the hotel makes up for it & if upkeep & a money was put back into it, it would once again be a fantastic place to stay. Also due to circumstances there was no bar or food available but this didnt affect our stay.

I didn’t like the property
Very uncomfortable bed Said there was a bar well it was a self service bottle beer barVery dated and smelly No atmosphere Reviews were false I would not stay again even if it was free
Staff were very helpful, we were able to store our luggage there prior to checking in and after checking out as we travelled by train and had time to kill bimbling around the town. The room was clean, nice size and the shower was great.
No on-site restaurant. Plenty of great eateries in the immediate area but due to being lazy we like to eat where we stay.. To be fair, they didn't advertise that there was food available so lack of research on our side of things.
The Lion is situated in a central location and has the benefit of parking directly next to the hotel. The Dickens suit looks over Wyle Cop and is a spacious comfortable room with a bath. This was a rerun visit to the Lion.
Nothing identified.
Loved the history in every part of it and easy parking right in the midddle of town
Needs a bit more maintenance and updated decor
Location and history of the building.
Needs secondary glazing due to outside noise at the front of the building.
Close to town.
Dated décor. Check in only accept cards not cash, wasn't aware of this.On site parking machine only accepts cash NOT card, also not aware. Informed by desk staff it was cheaper to pay at desk for parking again NOT made aware beforehand. Also, parking bays quite tight to get into. If the carpark is full there are (paid for) 24hr parking but only between 18:00-06:00.Majority of floorboards creaked when walking on them. Could hear resident upstairs walking around and snoring. Cannot open widows, apparently security locked. Lord knows what happens in emergency. Bath needs replacing, very marked giving dirty appearance. Toilet seat moved when sitting on it.
Very historical property with plenty of character. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room. Hair dryer, spare pillows Rooms clean, warm and comfortable. Plug sockets in the right places by the mirrors for my wife to dry her hair. TV in the rooms.
No eating service provided at the hotel such as breakfast, lunch or evening meals. That said you are spoilt for choice with other eating establishments in Shrewsbury to suit everyone's pallet.
A historic old coaching inn. Interior features are superb, it is in fact a listed building. Antique furniture has been retained in the public areas. Because of the age of the hotel, most rooms have an individual and interesting floorpan.
In past years (pre-covid) superb cooked breakfasts were available in this hotel. Now no breakfast is available, in fact no food at all. Our stay was pre Christmas, and accommodation in the town was at a premium - our rooms were more expensive than alternatives in the town, offering better facilities. The rooms were old fashioned, with a tiny old televisions; one lacked a remote control, reception could not find a working one. The bathroom sink was perched on a flimsy cobbled together softwood frame. The internet was so slow as to be useless. The bar was empty and cold with no cask ale available. Fortunately The Lion is well situated to enjoy the many pubs, restaurants and entertainment available in Shrewsbury.
Good location for town good safe parking ,at a price, good stay.
Brilliant location smack in centre
A little dated but didnt bother us , clean and tidy.
Easy check in. Excellent location in the town centre.Very grand traditional decor.
Some decor and fittings are looking a bit tired.I could hear other guests talking in adjacent rooms (I will take earplugs if staying again). The bar wasn't in use!No breakfast was being offered on the occasion of my stay, although I knew this when booking.
The Charles dickens suite was quirky and very comfortable .
The hotel had nothing no restaurant, no bar, just a reception and rooms. Such a waste of such a wonderful building. We didn’t feel welcomed and although the room was quirky and comfortable it should have been higher quality for £150 spent.
The Lion was a famous old coaching inn, and I remember it as the poshest hotel in Shrewsbury. It used to have a great restaurant, and it is a grade 1 listed building, with grand public rooms. My bed was comfortable and I slept well.
Sadly the Lion is going through a rough patch. It was used as a hostel for refugees for a while and is now for sale. It is beyond faded. It no longer has a restaurant. It doesn’t offer breakfast. Parts are closed off. All the carpets need replacing. All the rooms need redecorating. I hope someone saves it, but it needs a good few million spending on it to bring back its glory days.
I loved this hotel. The property was unique. A quite old building with lovely atmosphere, it was perfectly situated for ease of access to dining, shopping, and sightseeing. Also, the staff was quite lovely and accommodating.
I can’t say I disliked anything. It is, however, an older property, a bit of a labyrinth (in a charming way) with lots of steps. For someone with mobility issues, it could be a bit of a challenge.
It was a very convenient location for the town centre, within a stones throw to the market and The Mardol, High Street and cinema.
Last year there was breakfast provided and a bar, not so this time. There was just the room. Even though was a cleaner virtually every day.
Location was great and the second room we were given was much better
No food available at the hotel no bar just bottles of drink Not told of parking discount even though we rang to ask Asked for a room change as first room offered was not suitable and freezing cold Asked for a blanket as very cold weather no blankets in room give a counter quilt cover not a blanket.Very noisy over night with guest arriving from 1 am to 3am due to very heavy snow - no offer of compensation after a very disturbed night.
Lovely old hotel, not too far from the station. Room and bathroom quite large, clean and tidy.
