About

Set in 14 acres of landscaped grounds next to Furness Abbey, Abbey House Hotel offers luxurious rooms with historic features. Guests can enjoy free WiFi and free on-site parking. Built as a private house in 1914, the hotel has hosted King George V and other members of the royal family. Many of the rooms and public areas retain elements of Edwardian luxury, including high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows. The historic ruins of Furness Abbey are just a five-minute stroll from our hotel gardens and the golden sands of Roanhead Beach only a five-minute drive away. The charming town of Ulverston, birthplace of Stan Laurel, is just 15 minutes by car, and the beauty of Lake Windermere can be reached within 30 minutes. Guests can start their day with a full English breakfast and later enjoy an award-winning menu at the Rosette-accredited Oscar’s Restaurant, known for its exceptional cuisine, relaxed atmosphere, and attentive service. ** Abbey House Hotel is a dedicated wedding and event venue, so functions with music do take place. We recommend calling the hotel before booking to check whether any events are scheduled for your chosen dates, as there may be loud music until midnight.

    Pros +

    • Since getting married in the property 26 years ago we have always used Abbey House for our visits home since we now live abroad. The staff, property and restaurant are always amazing and the level of service goes above and beyond. The property maintains a five star level of comfort and cleanliness whilst been central to Barrow in Furness and within 20 minutes of the lake district which make it perfect for those wishing to stray further afield.
    • Grounds, food, facilities, staff
    • A modern hotel in a historic building, comfortable relatively spacious room, excellent breakfast. You can take several nice short walks in the gardens of the property, one leads to the ruins of the Furness Abbey. Make sure that the hotel does not host a wedding during your stay if you want to avoid loud music

    Cons -

    • Nothing at all
    • Some management of noise levels post-function. We were advised about a function and had anticipated noise to midnight but at 2 and 3 o'ock in the morning drunk guests wandering about screeching and shouting isn't pleasant.
    • Our bedding was torn which displayed a very discolored/dirty looking duvet which was off-putting.

What an amazing place this is. Sheer affordable luxury. Our room was beautiful Just could not believe the stunning hotel for the price we paid. Luxurious and so friendly.Beautiful gardens. The hotel building itself is pretty amazing. All the staff were so helpful and friendly. Can't wait to go back there . Our little Shangri-la

There was absolutely nothing that we could complain of

Friendly staff, lovely hotel. I think it’s wonderful for a wedding venue.

As a couple visiting, I thought there would be more walks around the grounds, but it was small. The beautiful paths only go around the hotel, and you are back in the same location after 10 minutes.

Lovely hotel. Staff very friendly. Still took cash which I am all for which is great. Only mishap during stay was staff seemed to mess up breakfast order but apologised with a bottle of prosecco so all good.

    Amazing facilities

Unfriendly and cold staff, except for reception staff and one Asian lady in the restaurant, the rest of the staff were cold and inhospitable. Shocking!!

The hotel itself and the grounds are beautiful, staff very friendly.

Well.. We booked for a nice relaxing night away, wanting to experience the hotel as a normal customer before enquiring regarding our wedding. When we arrived every path/entrance around the grounds were being resurfaced with tarmac. We sat outside in the garden area for a drink for a little while, it just stunk of tarmac and had numerous workmen on rollers/whackers which meant we could hardly have a conversation when sat next to each other.Ruined new £200 shoes having to walk on freshly laid tarmac everywhere also.. I understand completely the need to renovate, however, If we would’ve been notified about the works going on we would’ve changed the date of our visit, as it did ruin our stay and left a bit of a sour taste in our mouths..

Breakfast was amazing. Staff friendly. Good facilities and room service

Building work on the way to the room, I stayed in the extension part. Fixed shower head. Bathroom a little dirty. Immediate power off when you took key card out.

    Room was lovley

There was a function on. We may as well have been to it as the noise was so loud this went on till midnight.although we had been sent an email about this l was supprised that we were put right above and not a little out of the way. Doors banging till 1 with guests coming back from the party. We have stayed here lots of times and have always enjoyed it.Would think twice about staying again if there is a do on.Just to add we stayed in a contempo room.If we stayed again it would be in a delux in main hotel much quieter.
