- Terrible !!!! I needed to wait almost 20 mn for the check in, the girl did not take the clients in order.. then, in the room (you have to walk 300 meters even if you have a handicap..) candys on the ground.. and the room was not clean.. and the small fridge was broken.. and maybe so fecal things on the wall.. I had to say that to the receptionist and after, the card to access was out.. so the receptionist changed my room to a better one… but.. the card did not work, so I had to come back to the receptionist because he never moved… even if, to go to the rooms, I had each time to walk about 300 meters with a handicap.. great… and after in the new room…. It was the same.. not clean, the bath was not empty, there were some big dead bugs inside.. and .. papers in the toilet… no it’s really not serious!! I move a lot (each month) and it’s the first time I see that!! Incredible!!! Don’t go in this hotel.. and, at the end, I’ve lost more than 1 hour and I had a rdv.. it was complicated.. and I asked to a refund and did not want to stay there.. even if it was a night in February.. sleep outside should be better.. and more clean than the hotel. And, the receptionist did not do anything. In addition, he asked me for the refund, to do the things myself because it’s not his job.. great !!!!!
- Good location
- The location is great. Historic hotel. Good breakfast.
Cons -
- Decor is tired. Reception staff take a very long time to sort anything. Coffee machine broken at breakfast. Car parking not included and needs to be paid additionally.
- Long queue at check in. Restaurant furniture needs replacing. 1 coffee machine at breakfast.
- The TV didn't work only had two channels that only came on when they felt like it ,think the aerials need looking at .Also when I booked it never said anything about paying for parking which I only found out when I arrived, should be on the website to be honest.

Staff were friendly and the breakfast was spot on .Hotel was clean and bed was comfy as well .
The TV didn't work only had two channels that only came on when they felt like it ,think the aerials need looking at .Also when I booked it never said anything about paying for parking which I only found out when I arrived, should be on the website to be honest.
The staff have all been very helpful, the location is good with great parking. The beds are comfortable and there is lots on for children to do in the hotel. The shower was good
The rooms are very dated, with old windows that let the noise of traffic in. There were no plugs by the bed for charging phones
The bed was comfortable and the room as nice and clean. The entertainment was also of good quality.
Paying £14 to park my car was extortionate. Also the drinks at the bar are over priced.
Nice comfortable stay. Parking is great. Rooms very clean. Breakfast is amazing. Staff are friendly and helpful.
Rooms maybe need updating but it wouldn't stop me booking again.
Warmth and elegance of the hotel, staff were very pleasant. They were very quick to respond to our cold radiator, gave us heaters then the following day, it was repaired. Thank you.
How cold the room was when first arrived, though had heaters, it was an extremely cold night and we struggled to get warm hence not a good night's sleep. It was much better the following night as the radiator was repaired. Thank you.
The location was good for public transport.lovely big bathroom ,plenty of hot water. Had a fridge in the room. Tall ceiling in roomFriendly staff.
Couldn't see out of window, had a film on it.only a small double bed.didnt fit headboard.tv sat on a table in a gap.plug sockets too far away from a table.to be honest been in better rooms.Car park going up to £14per night.
Lots of character, history and beautiful architecture. Grade II Listed with lots of original wooden panelling and ornate plasterwork. Evening meals very good, with some interesting twists on classic dishes. Afternoon tea was excellent too.
Sadly needs lots of restoration work and a shadow of its former glory. Could be an absolutely amazing hotel. Really should make more of its glamorous history and all the famous past guests. The “library” was rather disappointing with less books than my “to read” pile!
Traditional
Cutbacks at breakfast- no cups and saucers, no milk jugs, no table cloths.
Staff in the bar area opposite the Winston Room.
Being told that because I had booked via Booking.com that I and my colleague would have to pay for parking. But if I had booked direct I would not. This touch a nerve for me because as a part of event organiser team, I tried to book using the direct Chess Event booking but the the staff where incapable of getting my booking correct on two occasions so booked by Booking.com to secure a correct booking and room. This cost me more than booking directly and then to add to that the parking charge was an insult. Winter staffing on a Valentine weekend and a 400 player chess event and parents meant they staff and kitchen staff could not cope with orders of meals. Add to that staff did not turn up for bar work on Sunday Morning became a overload at the other bar.
Historical and beautiful building, excellent breakfast and good entertainment
Entertainment not promoted enough, had to ask which room it was in , and tables and chairs were not set out, very poor management of entertainment
Nice hotel. A little old and dated in places but you expect that from such a traditional building. Breakfast was good but it came with the room.
It was ok clean i booked afternoon tea for my husbands 50th wedding was sitting waiting ages to be bought orange juice for me in a cup and I paid £58 odd for it and we couldn’t eat the sandwiches they was vile dident really like any thing also asked for a sea view room and got put on the side very disappointed
The hotels old features and history
My room was not clean. Lack of care taken with such a beautiful , historic building. Location is rough, take a stroll round the corner to the shop, met with drug addicts on every corner. Felt very unsafe. Some insect jumping about in my bed looked suspiciously like a bed bug. Terrible breakfast/ could not eat it, black pudding inedible
As always The Imperial Hotel ensured a great stay. Stayed overnight with 2 friends who haven't been before and both loved the hotel. Staff extremely helpful. Bedrooms both lovely with everything we needed. Comfortable beds.
The hotel was very quiet the night we stayed and the breakfast in the morning was table service rather then buffet style. I understand why it was done this way with such a small number of people to minimise waste but turned into a memory test in ordering a hot breakfast! And I hated the flasks with "hot" water or coffee really wasn't nice. Why couldn't we have a pot of tea or coffee? Looking forward to a better breakfast experience at our next visit!
Location. Comfortable room. Very good breakfast
Clean, comfy bed, warm. Helpful staff and good breakfast
It's not made obvious on the booking form that parking is not included in the price. £14.00 per night is expensive. One bedside light switch in bedroom was not working and couldn't be fixed before we left.
