About

This charming 19th-century house is located in Chinon, in the heart of the Regional Natural Park Loire-Anjou-Touraine and the Loire Valley. It offers uniquely decorated rooms and guests can relax on the shadowed terrace, by the garden. All of the air-conditioned rooms at Hotel Le Plantagenet feature a satellite TV, a telephone and a private bathroom with a bath or a shower. The guest rooms are set in the 2 different 19th century buildings. Some of the rooms boast original sculpted ceilings and wooden paneling. A breakfast buffet is served on the veranda looking out onto the garden. The hotel's bar provides a range of local wines. Other facilities include free Wi-Fi, bicycle rental and meeting facilities. Private parking is possible on site with an extra cost and Chinon Castle is just 0.6 mi from the hotel.

    Pros +

    • Nicely located, atmospheric hotel.
    • Very charming (a bit vintage) hotel, spacious and clean room with comfy bed. Good breakfast is served in the garden in the backyard in the garden. The hotel is located on front of the place used for public (free) parking. The staff is very friendly and professional. The good bar/restaurant next to the hotel. Despite my concerns regarding soundproofing (as building is quite old) it was very quiet.
    • The location

    Cons -

    • Lost points for the shower soap dispenser being empty. Bike storage exposed to weather, not great.
    • The bathroom (which is very clean) looks a bit outdated and should be modernized. May be could be noisy on Thursdays - market day on the front place.
    • We will ignore the numerous errors at the start, they were more or less corrected. The hotel was however tired and dusty. We had the misfortune to see a standard room & thank goodness we had booked a superior double that was barely as good as a normal double in any other hotel, with a bathroom that was beyond it's best. Our friends had a bed that was like a board with an equally underwhelming bathroom. For the price of the rooms, 2 sachets of coffee was ridiculous (and that only after it was asked for). The reception process was flustered and disorganised. I would strongly recommend not paying for breakfast, an inflated price for a distinctly substandard offering. We now undertand why you pay on arrival !Hopefully the renovations they are talking about will result in the rooms being worth the money that's charged, but in the meantime the pricing should be seriously reviewed downwards

Location and room was clean and spacious after being moved as our room wasn’t clean

    Bad

Reserved a room at the Hotel Le Plantagenet for 91 EUR but was questioned upon check-in how I was able to book the room when the hotel was full. The guy at reception said that it wasn't a problem since there was room in the other hotel (Brit Hotel Lion d'Or) but still charged us the same amount when Brit Hotel should have been cheaper. I complained and was able to negotiate breakfast at no additional cost. The room was very small, the mattress was hollowed and the bed as well as the headboard creaked at every move. I wouldn't recommend Brit Hotel Lion d'Or And I can't recommend Hotel Le pLantagenet because, in the end, I never got to stay there.

Huge room and bathroom with a connecting entrance hall. Big bed. Comfortable temperature. Large shower.

Nothing really, just that the WiFi reception was not good.

    4EnriquePosted on: 1-29-2025

The stuff was very friendly. Breakfast was OK

Wifi was not working, bed was incredible uncomfortable and bathroom was not really clean

Great location. Very central. Walk to old town, park, riverfront , fortress in minutes. Large free carpark opposite.

Paid parking was small (only 2 cars) and expensive! Most people have a car full of stuff and wouldn’t want to leave it in a public carpark . Room was dated , decor could do with an update but typical French hotel .

Great location for exploring Chinon ..don't miss out on the chapel in the hill..Staff spoke English and were very attentive..Small room but good bathroom but no cable tv . Breakfast was amazing and great value for money .Bar next door was a bit too handy if you like a beer ..Would highly recommend and I was there for 3 nights and would return.

Nothing really ..I wasn't in my room much ..Too busy being a NZ tourist.

We were on the ground floor with air conditioning, which was welcome. We had BBC television available, which was nice. The bed was soft but the expected sore back didn't happen. It was good to have English spoken at reception.

There were spider webs on a wall, which were dealt with when shown to staff. The bathroom light was movement activated. We were told this had been done in two rooms but was not a success. There was a problem with our TV and we were told someone would be along to deal with it. Next day we were told it wouldn't be done then because it was Friday and TV repairmen don't work on weekends. The website says there is parking but we were told this was only for one night. There are two, yes, two parking spaces crammed into the courtyard. We parked very close by in a large square although it was very crowded on the last day because the city was holding a medieval market so a lot of regular parking spaces were unavailable. By parking in the square for two days the car was a target for the many birds in the trees.

Location - big room - modern bathroom - parking adjacent on street and free - market day Friday? no parking

No one on reception on arrival

    8ArthurPosted on: 7-26-2024

Very large room, overlooking the square. Small extra area with fridge and kettle. Very reasonable price.

Position on square opposite river. Free parking in square.

Charming old style hotel. Nice staff

Ensuite had not been updated in decades. Showering whilst standing, holding a shortly tethered shower head behind a skinny curtain in our huge blue bath of curious design (it had a bizarrely sloping bottom which would position ones own bottom at a low point with the plug) required a sense of humour first thing in the morning. And for some, some limbering up I imagine as it was quite treacherous!Honesty prevails and so I have written the above but I did hesitate as I kind of liked the place. It was only two nights and I think we will remember it fondly. Oh and most of the breakfast buffet appeared to have been eaten up by a large group of cyclists I saw leaving that morning. We didn’t wait for anyone to appear with replenishment (no sign of a waiter) and instead went into town in search of coffee not from an automatic machine.

Comfortable old style hotel. Proprietor kindly provided milk for tea as room had kettle. Good breakfast. Very bike friendly and very central.

    Nothing really

    7GailPosted on: 6-17-2024

Easy to locate hotel. Ample free public parking directly opposite hotel, but be warned that on Thursdays some of the parking areas are used for the weekly market, so are prohibited and cars would need to be moved on Wednesday night to an unrestricted part of the car park. Location of hotel is very good for an easy, gentle stroll into the centre, with lots of restaurants, cafes and places of interest. Reception staff helpful and friendly.. Room was spacious and clean.

Our only niggle was the bed. It was quite low, which for a couple in their seventies made getting up a bit of a struggle, as we had an issue with the mattress giving little support. The bed was not the most comfortable, the mattress did not seem to give any support which at first we thought was because it was too soft, but then realised after our first night, that it had lost any support and was actually quite hard and just sunk under our weight as we moved. Unfortunately, neither of us slept well for the two nights we stayed at the hotel. However, this may just be an issue for the room we stayed in.

Very helpful staff. Hotel is like a Tardis. Lots of rooms but it is like stepping back in time. Website shows modernised rooms but we were staying in an older room. Staff Ensured we didnt get our car towed away due to the market the next day. Centrally located, once parked up you can walk everywhere. We were so tired after a long drive that I slept well. We didnt stay for breakfast. Market is huge and outside the hotel. We bought croissants and coffee from there and then continued our travels across France.

The bathroom was very dated (1950's maybe) and had mould on the tiles, bottom of the shower curtain and in the top corner of the bathroom. It really needs to be modernised. The extractor fan didnt work.
