    Pros +

    • Very nice skiing resort with nice appeal. View to the volcano - Mt of Doom - is very nice. Restaurant and bar are very good for such remote location. Convenient location for hikes and close to gondola.
    • I liked the alpine vibes of the hotel. It was in a good location and the room was clean.
    • We loved our stay here. Sadly, the weather turned and we couldn’t do the Tongariro Crossing hike as we’d planned. But the lovely woman at check-in gave us several other shorter options that we could fit in before the storm hit. We spent an entire day curled up on the comfy sofas in the lounge. The staff started the wood stove (yes, this was in summer! :), and we felt grateful to have such a lovely place to ride the storm out. The staff was all very helpful and we appreciated their service with a smile, especially so close to Christmas. If we’re lucky enuf to come back, we’d love to stay again.

    Cons -

    • Pluming is clearly outdated and scruffy. Lights in the room were very poor - only three out of six worked. There was no way we can turn lights at the bed tables - they look like a fake.
    • No AC so the room was a little hot.
    • Very tiny bedroom with in-suite bathroom. Barely fits two suitcases and 2 adults.

Phenomenal location next to Tongariro National Park visitor center. Amazing views from lounge area.

Very tiny bedroom with in-suite bathroom. Barely fits two suitcases and 2 adults.

Overall pleasant stay despite the noise issue

Walls were paper thin, could literally hear EVERY little conversation being had next door and I feel like our neighbors were speaking at a very appropriate volume.

The location is fantastic with views of all the mountains in the Tongariro National Park! Very close to the Taranaki Falls walk. I liked the indoor decor in our Ruapehu room and the hallways with the wooden walls. Though not very scenic, looking at the parking lot, it was convenient to bring your stuff in thru sliding door. The lounge and decks are very nice and they have a kitchen with microwave to use. The staff was very nice and started check in a little early. Dinner was quite good.

My husband thought room was a bit small. Didn’t like that they charged us for use of 2nd bed. After all, no breakfast was included. The place needs painting and looks snappy from the outside, though it’s nice on inside.

It’s very convenient to go on hikes from here. The room was clean and would be very comfortable during the winter. There’s a nice play room for kids. Views were stunning.

Carpark to the “family room with private bathroom” was a bit far to carry luggages. It was a bit too hot at the night in Spring as there were no proper ventilation unless keep open the glass sliding door. But it must be very comfortable during the winter.

Bar opened at four with several New Zealand beers on tap and bar food. The restaurant opened at six for dinner and was delicious. The entire place had a comfortable feel.

Lodge was in an ideal location. View of mountains were amazing. Restaurant was great and food tasty.

Place was a little dated and could use some renovations!

When booking this room, I must admit I was skeptical if the view would be as good as it was pictured. Well, the view was even better. This skotel was so quaint, beautiful, peaceful, and everything I needed. My only regret was that I didn't stay longer. When I first arrived, there was a massive cloud hanging so you couldn't quite see much. Due to the rainy weather, I decided to stay in for the evening. With it being so cold out, the owners had the fireplace roaring. I cuddled up on their living area couch next to the fireplace, book in hand. Their lounge room has has wraparound windows which added to the vibe. When the bar opened it was even better because then I was able to enjoy the space more with a local ale while reading. This is a fun ski themed lodge that feels as if you took a time machine back to the 1980s. The food at the restaurant was a great addition!

Resort was perfect. Access to great hiking and comfortable.

No lunch available on-site bit we were after peak season.

The staff was super lovely and helpful. Very friendly and went out of their way to help. The resort was also very clean and the location was great.

The walls in our room were so thin that we left the resort a day earlier due to our neighbours being incredibly loud and inconsiderate for 2 nights in a row. We didn't get any sleep because of it. The guests walking up and down the hallway were also very loud, I think it would be a good thing for staff to remind guests to be considerate of others.

Central to where we were, restaurant on the property, lovely views

    6FrancesPosted on: 4-28-2025

Location up on the mountain was good. Some nice views off deck and walking around area. The convenience of an onsite restaurant for dinner and breakfast was great. (no toasters in rooms anyway)

Several heating options in room not working. TV not working. Oil heater only heat source. Old building so lots of noise transference from other rooms and hallway, some doors opening etc sounded like rumbling mountain. Our door had very squeaky hinges when opened. The garden probably needed a trim as a tree was constantly hitting against the room wall at the headboard during the windy night. Overall there are lots of maintenance issues that would improve this site if done.

    Great bar with lovely staff

    No TV reception

    8PetePosted on: 4-27-2025

Really friendly and helpful staff, location was great for our adventure walk, food was also pretty good and breakfast was comprehensive.

Room windows were single glazed so it felt damp.

Decent size room and comfortable. Bedding and towels were clean. Hotel had a restaurant which was convenient. Beautiful views from the bar area and good location ~25 min drive to the tongariro crossing shuttle car park

Very outdated, carpet was dirty, shower is a slip hazard (and my partner did). No hand soap. Restaurant had limited options and the food was good but not great. Seems wrong to have to pay for a Jacuzzi at the hotel you're staying at. Photos a bit misleading because the photos for our booking show two very different tier style rooms.

Skotel is our home away from home each time we go to Tongariro National park. We love it so much that we adjust our plans to availability of our fav rooms (Ngauruhoe rooms are our favourite)

I planned to work as Skotel usually has great wi fi in the main building (was not so great in cabins) but there was some failure after bad weather , I hope it will be back to normal by our next stay

It was clean. A great location. Staff were friendly. Dated on the outside but retro cool on the inside. Being able to book in the spa after hiking was fabulous. Appreciated the alpine crossing shuttle service.
