    Pros +

    • Quiet and nice secluded location.
    • We stayed in one of the budget double rooms. While very simply furnished, we slept comfortably and certainly appreciated the flyscreen over the window (somewhat of a rarity in older properties in Aotearoa NZ!). It was lovely to listen to the sounds of the birdlife and the lake from our room. The lodge site is also a pleasant short walk to the cafe & pier where you get the boat for the first leg of the Patea Doubtful Sound Tour. I used the unisex shower & toilet in the same building as the lounge and they were good. The Venison burger from the Manapouri Cafe & Dairy was quite good. For the book nerds, you *must* check out the Two Week Bookshops on Home St (as seen in the 'Bookseller at the End of the World' series).
    • Convenient access to Te Anau and Manapouri downtown

    Cons -

    • Parking was a little tight getting out.
    • Room was small and damp (roof leaked) and mosquito infested. Every time door was opened another 6 or so would fly in. No hooks on wall to hang things to dry. No sink in room.
    • Since Possum Lodge is right on the junction of the Waiau River and Lake Manapouri, you *will* get sandflies. It is just a fact of life in NZ - if you are staying near water (particularly running water), there will also be sandflies. Bring good repellant. The internet is a bit hit and miss - we put this down to being in a small country town and somewhat isolated. Speaking of being a small country town, FYI there are limited places in Manapouri to get groceries. Manapouri Cafe & Dairy has a small selection of everyday groceries so you can get things like bread or milk, but if you are coming for a few days and you don't want to eat out, you will need to go to stock up in a bigger town first.

It would be much better if mosquito repellant is sprayed before check-in.

    Relaxing placeFriendly staffGood location

Quite a bit of bugs flying in the area just outside the door. They don’t sting but will fly into the car when door. Opens

Great Staff, good facilities, comfortable dorm cabin, nice cross section of travellers, nice location

Sand Flies, Everywhere, if your not carefull they will eat you alive. They have free insect repellent at the Reception for everyones use but as you can expect there's always some Low Life who steals it. Along with that are idiots who think that leaving doors and windows open somehow keeps Sandflies out. Possum Lodge is a wonderfull place, I intend to stay there again, But, if you stay there, bring Insect Repellent, spray and liquid and use it liberally.

Wonderful four bedroom house with a fireplace and parking located very close to the Doubtful Sound cruise terminal.

Staff/onwners were super kind and helpful, the room and the cottage were super comfortable and warm!We made a lovely barbacue outside and the vibe was great! If you are looking for a quiet and cool place to stay before you head up to Milford this is the right place!

When you arrive and realise this is exactly the kind of place you’ve always wanted to try, you know you’re in for something special. We were warmly welcomed, with everything explained to us — including a heads-up about road conditions for the next morning (very thoughtful!).If you’re heading to Milford Sound and need a place to stay for two nights, this is perfect. It’s like camping in style — warm, cosy, and surrounded by nature. The peace is amazing, and waking up to that lake view in the morning… wow, pure magic. My tip: stop by a supermarket beforehand and bring something to cook here. You won’t want to leave what I call a truly magical place (for those who value nature and experience over five-star luxury). I can only say thank you for everything.

Location. Cuteness. Staff are really helpful and friendly. Have stayed here before.

You need more/better toilets and showers. There are simply not enough and they are old and a bit manky.

We got a two-storey house for ourshelves, with jungle views from the large and cosy sitting room and even from the bath room.

It was expensive... This was the only option in the area, and had room for 8 people.... but we were only two... The price for 8 people would have been better. But, although it was a very nice house, with wooden ceiling, a huge kitchen and well heated, icluding a wood fire, I wonder if it would have been confortable for 8 people (it had 4 nice doble rooms). Because there was only one bathroom (though very nice) and the spiral staircase was not inviting to go toilet in the night...

Nice camping with some little accommodations in cabins, chill mood after some trips in Fjordland.

    10MadhavanPosted on: 4-15-2025

Very nice accommodation quite close to the departure point for doubtful sound cruise. The rooms were clean and facilities were good. The WiFi worked very well also.

It was very comfortable. The staff was great. Comfortable beds and blankets. The room was great and property was nice. Ping ping table was awesome. Lovely kitchen.

Honestly the sandflies made it a bit irritating but that is nothing against the property. The first night was spectacular. The second some of the guests were gross and loud. Peeing on toilet seats, slamming doors, etc. Once again nothing against the property just depends who the guests are.

A cute little retro cottage, right next to Lake Manapouri. A comfortable bed -- the best 8 and a half hour sleep I've had in ages.

Wonderful location near to Fraser’s Beach and wharf. Peaceful setting with a welcoming feel to the site. Good facilities and friendly, helpful owner.

3rd time staying here, great location, stayed in cabin with own shower, kitchen, lounge area, definitely worth the extra money,

Cute small spot family owned and operated by a lovely couple with a baby and their dogs. Makes me happy to support a place like this! Great price, nice hangout area, walking distance to the dock and to the town.

Only 2 showers from what I saw and they are small, but good enough. Sandflies, but you can’t really avoid them in this area.

The property is very sparse especially the kitchen facilities. The hob is very old and kitchen utensils dissapointing. Cooking was not a pleasure. Very little entertainment. I run an airbnb and know how hard it is and dissapointing to get a poor score. But this just need some TLC and attention . The stairs are also very dangerous for young and old.

Nice old fashioned camp ground with a homely feel. Well stocked kitchen.Nice staff. Clean and comfortable.
