    Pros +

    • The location, the staff, the food
    • Victorian style structure and ambience. Good service. Good breakfast.
    • This hotel is very old. It was founded in 1885. This hotel has two buildings: the heritage wing and the victory annex. In this hotel, breakfast is served in three locations:** The Palm Court, in the heritage wing on the ground floor ** Sarkies, in the victory annex on the ground floor ** The Planters Lounge, in the the victory annex on floor 6In each location, you can choose to sit outside or insideWe tried all of them. They are similar but not identical. We have the following rating:# 1. Sarkies# 2. The Palm Court # 3. The Planters Lounge In this hotel, there are two swimming pools. One is in the heritage wing on the ground floor. The other is in the victory annex on floor 6. Both pools are in the open air. We preferred the pool in the heritage wing.We had a room in the heritage wing. There was a living room, a bedroom and a bathroom. The room was nice and clean. There was plenty of space. There was a safe inside the closet. There was even a scale so we could check our weight. We had a good experience in this hotel. The staff? Friendly and helpful.

    Cons -

    • The room was not cleaned till late afternoon
    • only one door to bathroom area that locks the closet, toilet, wash sink, bathtub, and shower access. Very inconvenient for sharing room.
    • I will mention some minor flaws # 1. In the bedroom there were four soft pillows, too big. When we asked for smaller pillows they provided two pillows smaller but hard. We wanted smaller and soft. We decided to drop the issue. # 2. There was nowhere to hang our wet towels. There should be a towel rack with space for four towels. There is plenty of space in the room to include a towel rack # 3. When we return from the swimming pool, we have wet swim suits but there is nowhere to hang them up to dry. There should be a special place to hang up wet swim suits. These flaws are minor. But they deserve to be mentioned.

    Size of room, friendly staff.

    Price was too high

    10DanielPosted on: 1-14-2026

The hotel was amazing. All the rooms have excellent ocean views. You were about 10 to 15 minute walk to the heart of Georgetown. There are some really nice restaurants just across the street from the hotel if you don’t want to eat at the hotel restaurants. The pool on the roof is very nice. It is very quiet. The buffet for breakfast was amazing. The staff was very helpful.

Everything was excellent. As a sidenote, if you have an early morning flight, it does take about an hour to get to the airport in traffic from this hotel. Our driver picked us up at around 8 AM. In traffic to the airport was quite congested.

Wonderful historic property. Stay where Eva Gardner and Charlie Chaplin stayed. Large rooms and suites with historical interior, light switches from another century

The Annex is not as historic as the main building

I love to stay at E&O whenever I am in Penang. This year we stayed over Christmas and it was great. Decorations were beautiful and it felt like Christmas at home.

Greatest hotel I've ever stayed in. Fabulous view. Excellent breakfast. Great location. Beautiful decor. Friendly staff.

The threat of charging one of our children for breakfast on the third morning was jarring, but otherwise it was a great experience.

    10Samantha F.Posted on: 12-11-2025

We have stayed in E&O before and this time our stay, the rooms are upgraded. Breakfast we had at the 6th level which is a small portion but the view is still as beautiful as i remembered it. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.

nothing much just that the outdoor area at the platform side was quite dirty with birds poo.

Just the most beautiful hotel in a sublime location. An oasis to come back to after a humid day out.

Why all the plastic bottles?? Five-star hotels are supposed to set the example, yet plastic bottles are handed out like candy here. I see there's a thriving conference business at the hotel. Presumably, plastic bottles galore there for delegates. C'mon guys. Lead the way.

    10HeatherPosted on: 11-1-2025

Views, comfortable room, luxurious bath, great breakfast buffets. While the buffet on the 6th floor was smaller, it was quieter and more relaxed, with lovely balcony tables.

A bit of a slog to cross some busy streets to get to the historic area of town. On the other hand, the views of the sea were stunning.

We were there for three nights and stayed at the Victory Annexe. Property is located very close to George Town's UNESCO World Heritage sites. Breakfast spread at the "Planter's Lounge" was really nice. Staff very helpful. Overall experience has been really good. Would love to stay there again during our next visit to George Town, Penang.

    Nothing comes to my mind

    10ChristopherPosted on: 10-22-2025

Beautiful room, spacious, with a lovely view over the Andaman Sea, a functional dressing room fitted with iron and ironing board and his and hers washbasins, and a lovely bathroom with excellent shower and delightful clawfoot bath

Hard to pinpoint anything, but when we asked for beer for our minibar, we were offered beer at bar prices. We decided instead to get some at 7-Eleven at a fraction of the cost. Perhaps this is what happens in a predominantly Muslim country - similar to the fact that the breakfast buffet offered no bacon.

    The building, atmospheres was great

I do feel I’ve been discriminated as I was given a left room- zero view, almost in the victory wing while I booked heritage months ago( basically the room is in between of the two wings, next to fire staircase)- and I was even the first ones to check in. I had to had a conversation with the lady in the reception and had it changed, apparently they have rooms with MUCH better view but don’t want to give us.

    10Thomas M. F.Posted on: 10-17-2025

We like:- the breakfast on the first floor and the sixth floor- Housekeeping- The gift shop- All the staff on the property were very nice- Front desk and concierge were very helpful- the swimming pool area- the hair salon

Soundproofing was quite bad. You could easily hear everything from the rooms. You could even hear people walking, let alone talking. It was annoying when people would talk or make loud noises or shut the door loudly while I’m sleeping, late at night or early morning. You could hear the slightest sounds.

It was a beautiful hotel with a lot of history. Kept very nice and you couldnt tell they were hitting 140 years!!!

Had some ants crawling all over both sinks. Very small so it didnt bother us much but one morning there were a lot of them. Our floor smelled like fresh paint but it was only in the halls so no big deal.

Very good localization - historical place - large room

A bit too noisy especially during the night
