    Pros +

    • The property was charming and pretty, close to the heart of town but peaceful. The breakfast which was included at Christoph’s attached was a nice start to my day. Rubilyn and Judi are the managers who made my stay so welcoming. They are the best hosts, so much so that we will be friends forever. They were truly the best part of my experience here. I hope to return!
    • Convenient location, lots of character, wonderful hosts.
    • Location and beautiful furniture. Environment peaceful and impeccable.

    Cons -

    • Second bedroom not as comfortable, thin blanket was close to a loud humming machine outside bathroom. Breakfast could have more local variety.
    • Restrictions with the noise and fragile furniture- not ideal for families with kids-. Also, no elevator.
    • I would add a chair in the main room.

I had an amazing stay at Coffee Atelier in George Town’s UNESCO heart. This boutique gem, set in beautifully restored 20th-century shophouses, blends old-world charm with modern comfort. My suite was spacious, filled with antique charm, and had all the essentials, Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and a cozy vibe. The location is perfect, just steps from Chulia Street, Blue Mansion, and Armenian Street, making it so easy to explore Penang’s vibrant street art and food scene, yet it’s surprisingly peaceful. The staff who took care of us were incredibly warm and helpful, sharing great local tips. Highly recommend for a memorable Penang stay!

I would add a chair in the main room.

It is a very charming hotel with history and antique furniture. The host, Ruby, was very welcoming and always keen to help. The hotel is conveniently located and easy to get to main sites. Breakfast was tasty and plenty.

You can hear footsteps from the upstairs, but guests should understand that it's an old building.

We had a great time at Coffee Atelier. Ruby is super friendly and always happy to share tips and help with anything — it really made us feel welcome! The place itself is beautiful, spacious, and in a great location. We really enjoyed our stay overall.

Breakfast is served at the restaurant just downstairs. It’s a calm and quiet setting, which we liked, but after three nights it started to feel a bit repetitive and limited in variety. That said, I do appreciate that it’s not a buffet — much less food waste — though it would be great to have a few more options to choose from.

Great location, helpful staff, good facilities and traditional building.

We had a wonderful stay at Coffee Atelier : if you like small historical hotels with a quaint vibe -  look no further. It's very calm (despite being close to the main streets), we didn't hear any noise and we stayed 4 nights (at the end of Ramadan). Moreover the staff is very friendly and helpful (they packed us a small breakfast because we were leaving early) : our special thanks to Ruby!

We absolutely loved our stay here! The whole building and the rooms were so clean and well maintained. Even other tourists who weren't staying at this hotel we're taking pictures of it as it was so pretty. Excellent location, walkable to most places. Ruby in particular was very attentive and very helpful.

Great location two blocks from Chulia and Love Lane and so special to stay in a historic building, with multiple rooms and a private courtyard. Wonderful staff couldn't be more welcoming or attentive (thanks Ruby & co). Lots of niceties like soft sheets and towels and great AC. Penang is hot and sticky, and I loved coming back to cool off.

The toilet and shower are out through the courtyard, with a few steps involved. Someone with mobility issues might find this unconventional setup challenging at night.

We loved everything about Coffee Atelier, our authentic suite of rooms with small private courtyard, the friendly, helpful staff, the central old town location. We couldn’t fault it and want to return

We loved so many things about our stay at Coffee Atelier! The highlights were the warm hospitality and genuine care of the staff (thanks, Ruby!), its central location—perfect for walking to many of George Town’s must-see sights—and the peaceful oasis of our suite, especially the bed and outdoor patio, after a long day of exploring. Our ground-floor suite was spacious, with a separate room for our luggage, knick-knacks, and all the inevitable mess that comes with international travel. This layout kept our actual bedroom neat and restful—absolute heaven after a hot and humid day in Penang. The WiFi was reliable, our room was tidied daily, and the mini-bar restocked every day, which was a nice touch. We also enjoyed the included breakfast at Christoph’s (the muesli was great!), but on our last two mornings, we skipped it to explore local breakfast options—we highly recommend the Heritage Transfer Road roti canai! It was generally quiet in our room—we couldn’t hear any noise from the street or nearby establishments, which seems to be a common issue in George Town. On our last night, we did hear some footsteps and creaking from newly arrived guests in the room above us as they settled in late in the evening, but it wasn’t too bad and definitely not a deal breaker. The air-conditioning was excellent, and there were quiet ceiling fans in every space of our suite, making it easy to keep the room cool. Hot water was abundant, and the water pressure was strong. The outdoor toilet and shower might not be to everyone’s taste, but I personally loved it. It just makes sense for hygiene, sanitation, and dealing with the humidity. If you have any mobility or accessibility needs, be sure to book one of the ground-floor suites.Overall, my partner and I had such a pleasant, comfortable stay at Coffee Atelier. We’ll definitely stay here again on our next visit to Penang!

A stylish renovated old shophouse in the heart of old georgetown on a quiet street, with interesting modern art on the walls and beautiful old furniture and persian carpets.

The steep narrow staircase to the upstairs suite was difficult to get up and down. The bathroom open to the outside was spacious but a heat trap. A fan in the bathroom would have been welcome.

    10KarenPosted on: 3-10-2025

Absolutely everything! Ruby and her sister Judy and the rest of the staff who were so friendly and helpful and went that extra mile to make sure our stay was perfect. The location was excellent, in a quiet street but just around the corner from cafes and bars. Breakfast - good choices and beautifully prepared and presented. And finally the accommodation itself was amazing...the photos do not do it justice...It felt like a home from home.

There was nothing not to like.

    9BeatricePosted on: 2-27-2025

Welcoming and superbly located in the old town, the suite is set within a heritage building. It’s simply furnished yet comfortable, with access to a private outdoor area where the toilet and washing rooms are located. A good breakfast is also included. Judy and Ruby were super helpful and friendly. Recommended!

The atmosphere was outstanding, with a beautifully preserved historic charm. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Upon arrival, they gave us a short briefing about George Town and even recommended several excellent cafés.

Perfect location. Near to attractions of the old town but in a quiet street. Property charming and bursting with character and history. Staff excellent and on hand to answer any queries.

Absolutely loved this ground floor, delightful, traditional shophouse accommodation. Such a gem of a place. Very comfortable and roomy, especially with having the enclosed outside verandah to sit and relax. Very peaceful, yet so convenient for restaurants etc. We felt Ruby was exceedingly helpful, offering advice and tips on places to visit etc.

    9SusanPosted on: 2-16-2025

Our room was actually a suite of rooms, including a courtyard where the separate shower and toilet facilities were located. We enjoyed all the space. The staff, especially Ruby, were extraordinarily attentive and helpful. Ruby was a wonderful source of information about what to do around Georgetown.

We didn't find fault with anything at this tiny four- room hotel.
