About
Since the 16th century, The Spread Eagle has hosted historic guests such as King Charles II and the writer Evelyn Waugh. Today it offers a warm welcome, excellent food and free Wi-Fi. The Spread Eagle is in the heart of historic Thame, famous for its 1-mile-long (1 mi) Main Street. With a rich history, the hotel’s guests have included royalty, famous politicians, writers and even French prisoners from the Napoleonic wars. The Spread Eagle was made famous by the unusual John Fothergill, who owned the hotel in the 1920s. He wrote about this in the popular book, “An Innkeepers Diary”. Fothergill believed in the highest standards of food and service – this tradition continues in The Spread Eagle’s Eden Bar and Grill. A fresh new English menu is served, including a reassuring ‘comfort cooking’ section. The fantastic city of Oxford is within easy reach, along with the historic town of Aylesbury. For shopping addicts, Bicester Outlet Village is only minutes away.

- Charming building, lovely room, tasteful decor and very comfortable bed. Restaurant attached had an excellent menu and the breakfast offerings were good.
- The location! The included cooked breakfast. The clean and comfortable room.
- Location on the high street was great. Comfortable room although too hot and radiator wouldn't turn down. Friendly staff.

- The room was not well renovated. The window sill is rotting and they painted over the rot, so it doesnt really close well and wouldn''t lock which compromises the security of the room. Room 16 is on the stairs and thereâ≢s a lot of noise from other g
- That there was no interior chain lock on the bedroom door… anyone with a key could have come in… and the nights I was there there were footsteps outside my room around 1 am.. very creepy.
- Breakfast was a bit stingy - only one rasher of bacon and one tiny sausage. Although there is a bar, we never saw anyone in it. No restaurant in the evening although the staff did offer to get us fish and chips.

Great location, staff helped me with my bags
There was no elevator and the reception desk was often unattended. Breakfast wasn't included.
The location was excellent. The staff were lovely and very helpful.
I think the plumbing may have a blockage. There was a smell emanating from the bathroom. The shower door was very narrow.
Nice sized and comfortable room. Great location in central Thame. Breakfast was good. On raising the issues with the hotel (see below) a partial refund was immediately forthcoming.
Downside was that only one of the two windows could be opened and it was a very warm night. With no aircon and only a deskfan it was very difficult to sleep. Also, cold water in the bathroom sink only only came through in a very small trickle and the soap dispenser in the shower was empty!
Overpriced and awoken at 7 from air in the pipes. No night curtains. Not impressed
The staff were efficient and friendly and the room was comfortable although we struggled a bit with opening the door to the room. we liked having a downstairs room which opened onto a garden so we could sit outside.
Breakfast was adequate but we expected a little more variety in the buffet. We did not have an evening meal but on looking at the menu it was limited and the restaurant did not look very welcoming.
Lovely room. Very comfortable bed. Capacious bathroom. Excellent location. Very pleasant breakfast room lady. Sensible English breakfast!
The light on the bathroom mirror didn't work (Rm 8)
I managed to sleep
The bed was hard and lumpy. The water pressure was poor in the shower the window were not very clean .
Breakfast was lovelyGarden room nice
Staff at night asked us to move in from standing by the restaurant Clearly assumed we were just shelteringLooked very surprised when u saud fine we will go to our room.offered to let us back but we didn't want to
Folks it’s £75.10 a night including an excellent cooked breakfast. What do you expect. I thought it excellent value for money.
Staff a little indifferent and not exactly engaging
We have previously stayed at the Spread Eagle. However, this time we stayed in one of the garden rooms. It was very nice. Spacious with a wardrobe, chest of drawers and side cabinets so, plenty of room to back clothes and items away. The bed was very comfortable and we both slept well. The restaurant food was delicious, simple traditional english food very well cooked. We had the fish and chips both evenings and it was lovely, not at all greasy. The breakfast choice was also very good, with a buffet for cereals and extra toast if you wanted it, and also cooked breakfast options. We paid half board which meant that we had up to £30.00 to spend on our evening meal, which was more than enough for two courses. The deal was excellent value. Note there is a nice spacious car park to the rear of the hotel but you do have to pay £5.00 a day. On the plus side, you get a full day so, even if you check out at 11.00am on Sunday, you can still be parked in the carpark which is very useful. We will definitely stay at the Spread Eagle again. It is definitely becoming a favourite of ours. The only reason we didn't give the rating as excellent was because of the issues that we had with the shower and tv. Hopefully when we next stay it will all be perfect it the rating will be 5 stars.
The rooms' central heating wasn't on but there was an electric heater which we used and was very efficient as it made the room nice and warm. We had an issue with the overheard shower which only ran cold and very oddly the television red light (standby) flashed blue in the middle of the night which woke my partner up. When we mentioned these issues with the hotel manager he was very apologetic and didn't charge us for the wine that we had had with our evening meal.
Position.
Rooms good do with updating. Water temperature for the bath was only warm.
Huge bath and bed..garden room ,very quiet
It was functionally ok. Room (the Bothy) small, a bit tired. Breakfast was nice. Breakfast staff attentive. Resented having to pay to park my car in hotel car park, albeit only £5 for 24hrs.
comfortable room
the bathroom tiles need sorting out floor all loose
Lovely and quiet garden room, Bed comfortable and breakfast good.
The receptionist on departure was sweet, but didn't ask if we enjoyed our stay. The location is perfect for travellers, just such a shame that a beautiful hotel has disappeared into what it is now.
Where can I start. Receptionist on arrival - no acknowledgement and very transactional - not a warm welcome! Room was ok but very hot, the thermostat was on the floor by the radiator - bed was comfy but the bathroom was not particularly clean and had signs of mould (see pictures) - there were two plastic cheap cups in the bathroom and not enough toilet roll. Our second bedroom was even worse and had been used by another family member the night before - the bath was taped up at the side and hand written in repair - the ceiling had been patched up with paint in places but not others and the room was just a total disgrace. In fact the whole building was tired and in huge need of upkeeping - chipped paint, scrappy wallpaper hanging off and water damaged ceilings throughout. The service at breakfast was appalling - no greeting, no table available set up for 4 (we had to set one up ourselves by taking clean items from other tables that had been used), none of the tables had been cleared, the coffee had run out, as had the orange juice and the milk was only enough for one - the whole time we were there these were not filled up - we had to ask in the end. There was rubbish all over the counter where people had helped themselves, again - nothing cleaned away. The waitress / server had absolutely no interest - although she was polite when taking our order (the cooked food was tasty!) she just had no get-up-and-go. The whole staff could do with some customer service training. Very disappointing, will not stay there again - would rather stay in the Travelodge down the road. Such a shame because it was once very well managed.
The location was good. Bed & pillow comfortable.
Breakfast was poor, particularly on the first morning. Greasy and poor quality. Car park charge was extra. The staff were not friendly or helpful although Ruby made a good effort.
