There was nothing I liked about this hotel. Run down and dirty. Way over priced for a "economy" hotel. Paint flaking off the walls. They charged me twice. Didn't know I signed out. Very loud. Parking lot right outside my window.
The location was great for what I needed, the bed was pretty comfortable and the check in process was extremely easy.

Being located in a ski resort, this condo felt safe and was close to nature. The setting was beautiful.
The unit was larger than we expected and the appliances were up to date and really exceeded our expectations. The area was very quiet and we were very comfortable.
Convenient location. Winterplace Condo unit M-202. Would not recommend this particular unit but would definitely stay at Winterplace again if we could get a better unit.

I would not stay here again.
The hotel was filthy, the wallpaper in the bathroom peeling off the wall I never received housekeeping, fresh towels, or pick up of garbage, refill of coffee, etc. The swimming pool it¿s freezing, cold and smells¿¿.

Top Tips
- Reserve your lodging near Killington or Pico by early December to secure best rates. February stays can rise 40-60% in price and room selection narrows quickly. Use hotel loyalty programs to access early-booking or member rates when possible.
- Travel during shoulder months for 25-35% lower nightly rates—expect rates around $130-$170 from November to March in Rutland and Poultney. Hotel guests can enjoy quieter stays and potential upgrades during these off-peak periods.
- Confirm if Vermont’s 10% lodging tax (9% state + 1% municipal) is included in your nightly rate before booking. This tax typically adds $15 to $50 to a weekend reservation, and is required for all hotels and short-term rentals in Rutland County.
- If driving an EV, prioritize hotels offering onsite Level 2 charging. Public Level 2 chargers in Rutland are limited—only two (6.6 kW). This saves 20-30% charging capacity loss versus relying on public options for an 8-hour charge.
- Request a ground-floor room or accessible unit if you need step-free access, as only 3 of 12 downtown Rutland inns list this amenity online. Over 60% of Main Street buildings predate ADA requirements. Confirm accessibility features with the hotel before arrival.
- At gas stations or hotels, always choose 'charge in USD' to avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fees, which add 4-7% above standard exchange rates. Check if your card offers additional foreign transaction fee savings.
- Look for properties with Green Lodging certification or Green Mountain Power partnership. Five hotels in Rutland County have completed energy upgrades, leading to 20-30% lower energy use from heat pumps and extra insulation. Enjoy a more comfortable, sustainable stay.
- Expect 25-50 Mbps Wi-Fi speeds in rural rentals, but always check upload speeds (often 5-10 Mbps). If you need to work remotely or video chat, ask about internet performance, especially in towns like Wells or Tinmouth.
- Bring cash for small businesses and farm stands, since 30% in the area do not accept cards. Major ATMs (PNC, KeyBank) charge a $3-$4 fee per withdrawal. Many chain hotels offer bank-grade ATMs onsite for guest convenience.
- Follow local custom by tipping 15-18% at full-service restaurants, as Rutland relies on gratuities since staff are paid $6.25 per hour. No tip is expected at counter-service venues or most hotel quick-service areas.
- Driving to Killington? Use I-89 Exit 6 or 7 for the fastest route; this shortcut saves 18-22 minutes over Route 4, especially valuable during winter storm delays. Ask your hotel about current plowing and travel advisories.
- If you have allergies, request hypoallergenic or mold-resistant bedding, particularly in historic inns with 60-70% summer humidity. Only 2 out of 10 surveyed properties list hypoallergenic options, but many chain hotels provide HEPA filter-equipped rooms. Confirm in advance.
