Top Tips
- Book hotels in Hot Springs 6-8 weeks before summer stays to avoid average rate increases of 30-50%, especially ahead of major events like the Sturgis Rally. For August, extend your planning window to 3 months to potentially reduce booking fees by 15-20%. Review cancellation policies and compare member or flexible rates to maximize value.
- Expect an extra 5-7% in local taxes on hotel stays, with occupancy and sales taxes averaging $15 to $20 per night. Always compare total prices (with all fees) when booking to avoid unexpected charges at check-in.
- Choose downtown hotels for 10-15 minute walks to hot springs and attractions, with safer neighborhoods reporting under 100 property crimes per year compared to the outskirts. Some top brands offer area maps or local shuttles, which can help navigate limited transit options.
- Verify hotel Wi-Fi speeds of at least 10-30 Mbps before booking if remote work is required. Winter storms may cause rural outages of 1-3 hours, so check for properties with backup generators or 24/7 business center access to stay connected.
- Store valuables in hotel safes during summer events like the Sturgis Rally, when thefts rise by 40% above the annual average of 50 incidents. Use chain hotel loyalty apps to report or track lost items, and be cautious of unsolicited services near tourist spots to reduce scam risks.
- Request accessible rooms with step-free or ramp access in advance, since only 40-50% of Hot Springs hotels offer these features, especially in historic buildings. If needed, confirm availability of visual alarms or ADA bathrooms when booking.
- Select hotels with heated rooms and generators, as winter outages average 2-4 hours and Hot Springs can be 10-15°F colder than the state average. Confirm heating details at booking to avoid discomfort during sub-zero nights, and check if complimentary hot beverages or onsite dining are available during disruptions.
- Choose hotels certified for Black Hills Sustainable Tourism to help reduce water use by 20-30% during dry summer months. Participation in towel reuse or minimal housekeeping can further aid conservation and sometimes earns loyalty points at major chains.
