Available charging for my electric car and free. As EV?s become more common, motels will discover that this is increasingly important for EV owners.

I felt like I was staying at a friends house. I was greeting by name everytime I came in the door and we had some great conversations about the hotel and fort as well as things outside the area. I would book and stay here again.
I enjoyed Fort Scott historic downtown. It¿s one of nicest downtown scenes in Kansas. Beautifully decorated at Christmas time. The hotel is a few step from the historic shops and restaurants. Once you¿re there you can walk to everything.
The hotel is more about keeping to the authenticity of the building and not modern convenience. I had everything I needed and enjoyed the beauty of the old building.

Top Tips
- Book Iola hotels 3-6 weeks ahead for events like the Allen County Fair (September) to avoid 25-40% price surges and secure rates under $100 USD. Verify availability on OTAs.
- Request a basement-level room when booking during spring or summer (April-June) - about 60-80% of Iola hotels offer basement tornado shelters, which reduces injury risk. If you require accessible shelter routes, ask hotel staff to confirm both basement and step-free access when reserving.
- Check hotel Wi-Fi speeds (expect 10-30 Mbps) before remote work in Iola, and bring a mobile hotspot as rural outages can occur during storms. Many chain hotels offer business centers with extra connectivity, so ask the front desk to verify backup options for work needs.
- Account for the 12-15% hotel occupancy tax in Allen County by using platforms that show inclusive pricing, which can save 5-10% versus standard US rates.
- Confirm accessibility features, like step-free access, ramps, or visual alarms, when reserving, since only 30-50% of Iola hotels offer these. Contact the hotel 1-2 weeks in advance to request an accessible room or specific adaptations.
- Secure lodging 3-4 months ahead for the Iola Old Car Show (late April or early May) and Iola Mule Festival (early October) to avoid 15-25% price surges.
- If remote work is critical, confirm with your hotel that typical Wi-Fi download speeds meet your needs (expect 20-50 Mbps).
- When withdrawing cash, always opt to be charged in USD (local currency) to avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) fees and unfavorable exchange rates.
- Base your hotel search along U.S. Route 54 for easy access to downtown Iola, dining, and event venues. Key points are generally under 10 minutes away by car.
- If your hotel isn't adjacent to dining or attractions, ask about available shuttle services to simplify access without a personal vehicle.
- Book 2-4 weeks ahead for rodeo events (April and August) as hotel prices typically spike 40-60% during the Allen County Rodeo and Farmers’ Day.
- Choose US-54 Highway hotels such as Super 8 or Days Inn to access 10-15% AAA/CAA discounts, which are uncommon in small Kansas towns. Bring your membership card and ask about eligible rates during booking or at check-in to confirm your savings.
- Request ground-floor rooms in historic properties, as 70% of pre-1950s hotels (such as Historic Hotel Windsor) lack elevators. This option supports guests with mobility needs or heavy luggage for easier access.
- Skip 'resort fees' since Iola hotels rarely add these charges. If you are charged, dispute it, as the Kansas AG enforces fee transparency.
- Park your car facing outwards at highway motels after dark, as local police report car break-ins are 2-3 times higher in lots where license plates are obscured. For extra security, look for hotels with well-lit parking areas or nightly patrols.
- Bring a surge protector for your devices - summer power fluctuations (May-September) cause 1-2 outages a month at older properties, and front desks rarely provide extras. If staying at a chain hotel, ask in advance if surge protectors or charging stations are available.
- Leverage 'Kansas Weekday Stay' deals - Sunday-Thursday rates drop about 20% at chain hotels (Best Western, Comfort Inn) that target business travelers.
- Book at least 3 weeks ahead for best rates, as prices are 15-20% lower than last-minute bookings, especially for hotels near Allen County Fairgrounds.
- Use local ATMs for cash withdrawals to avoid currency conversion fees (DCC) by selecting 'local currency'. Most ATMs charge a flat $2.50 USD fee.
- Check for seasonal events like the Allen County Fair before booking, as rates can surge by 50-75%. Book at least 2 months in advance to secure lower prices.
- Verify step-free access in advance, as many historic hotels have limited accessibility. Request a step-free room when booking.
- Stay near downtown to enjoy walkability - most downtown hotels are within 10-15 minutes' walk to the Iola Square, local cafés, and the Bowlus Fine Arts Center. Verify walking distances to attractions when booking.
- Request detailed allergen disclosure for meals, as most Iola hotels do not have centralized allergen menus. Contact the onsite restaurant or food service manager before arrival to confirm safe options.
- Use hotel loyalty programs like Choice Privileges to save 10-15% at participating hotels.
- Check Wi-Fi speeds before booking - downtown hotels offer 20-50 Mbps, but verify directly with the hotel.
- Avoid peak check-in hours by arriving between 2-4 PM to reduce wait times at the front desk.
- Utilize hotel shuttle services for transportation, as public transit in Iola is limited.
