Top Tips
- Use the South Shore Line for direct rail access to downtown Chicago; typical travel time is about 60-75 minutes. Check NICTD timetables, as off-peak and evening trains are less frequent, and ask your hotel about shuttle or rideshare options to the station or local transit connections.
- Request a room facing away from the Indiana Harbor/ArcelorMittal industrial complex to limit exposure to industrial noise and odors. Staff can help with room location requests during booking or check-in, subject to availability; ask about specific floor numbers or compass directions for clarity.
- Check AirNow for real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) before outdoor activities; bring an N95 mask if the index is at or above 100. Many hotels offer air purifiers or can recommend indoor fitness areas, and front desk staff can provide local air quality updates.
- For long-term stays, confirm your hotel's location against EPA site maps, as some areas of East Chicago (especially West Calumet) have a history of lead contamination. Ask the front desk or management for information on water safety and location history, and refer to government resources for current environmental quality data.
- Compare door-to-door travel time when flying into Gary/Chicago International (GYY) versus ORD or MDW, since GYY has limited commercial flights even though it's geographically close. Use your hotel's concierge or booking desk to estimate travel times and review shuttle or ground transportation options, including typical wait times.
- Select hotels near the I-90/I-94 corridor that offer 24/7 front desk service and controlled-access corridors to enhance safety and enable quicker exits. Many national-brand hotels include security features and can help with area questions or emergencies; confirm these amenities when reserving.
- Plan to allow an extra 30-60 minutes for airport or road transfers between December and February, as lake-effect snow from Lake Michigan may delay travel. Many local hotels provide weather alerts and real-time travel updates through an app or at the front desk, and can suggest indoor amenities or extended checkout if needed during storms.
- Identify the nearest full-service emergency room, such as Franciscan Health in Hammond or Gary, with typical drive times of 10-20 minutes. Hotel staff can supply directions, emergency contacts, and accessibility details for local medical facilities, and advise on available first-aid or medical support at the property.
