Top Tips
- Book your Big Sur stay 4 to 12 weeks in advance for June to September or long weekends, as most hotels enforce a 2-night minimum and fill up early due to room scarcity. Confirm cancellation and deposit policies directly with the property to avoid penalties, because some boutique accommodations have stricter terms.
- Always verify Highway 1 conditions on Caltrans.ca.gov before departure. Post-storm closures can add 2 to 4 hours via US-101 between Monterey and Big Sur. For the latest info, check Caltrans social feeds or call 1-800-427-7623 if traveling during the rainy season.
- Fuel up in Monterey or Carmel before heading south, since gas stations in Big Sur are scarce and may charge up to 30% to 50% more than city rates. Check your vehicle's range and consider local EV charger maps if renting an electric car.
- Download offline maps and booking confirmations before entering Big Sur, as cell coverage is spotty and hotel internet often averages 1 to 5 Mbps. For important communications, inform hotel staff in advance if you have urgent connectivity needs.
- Expect 12% to 15% in state and Monterey County lodging taxes added to your nightly rate, and verify the final price at checkout to prevent billing surprises. Ask if any resort or parking fees apply, as these may not always be included in quoted prices.
- Dinner options are limited after 8 to 9 PM in Big Sur, so reserve hotel dining at least 24 to 72 hours in advance, especially on weekends and holidays. If you have dietary restrictions, confirm menu options or bring shelf-stable snacks, as supplies are limited after hours.
- If you need step-free or accessible rooms, request them when booking. Many Big Sur hotels are built on hillsides with stair-only access and limited accessible rooms. Confirm visual alarms or service animal policies with your hotel for added assurance.
- Emergency hospital care is 30 to 60 minutes away at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, so bring essential medications and medical devices. Share emergency contacts with your hotel and verify if they can assist with urgent needs.
- Check hotel parking restrictions for vehicle height and length before arrival. Big Sur lodging often features steep, narrow lots with limited RV or oversized vehicle access, so request a spot when booking to guarantee on-site parking during busy periods.
