Top Tips
- Prioritize transportation planning, especially for Crystal Airport. Many suburban hotels offer shuttles to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), but not to Crystal Airport (MIC). Confirm with your hotel regarding rideshare (Uber/Lyft) or local taxi availability, and ask if they can arrange a pre-scheduled ride for early flights - typical rideshare or taxi wait times may be 10-20 minutes. Check local public transit schedules if you need an additional option.
- Confirm parking policies and costs before booking. Suburban hotels often include parking, but verify if overnight or long-term parking is permitted and if fees or towing rules apply. Some hotels near Crystal Airport may charge $15 per night; review major chains’ policies for consistent rates.
- Request a quiet room to minimize aircraft noise. Crystal Airport is an active general aviation field, so ask for a room facing away from the runway or on a higher floor, and avoid locations near doors or elevators. Some brands offer soundproof rooms or can supply earplugs at the front desk for guests sensitive to noise.
- Prepare for Minnesota's variable weather conditions. Winters (November-March) are severe; bring a warm coat, boots, hat, and gloves, and allow extra travel time during snow or ice. Summers (June-August) can be humid, so confirm your room has air conditioning. Ask if hotels provide complimentary weather essentials, such as umbrellas or ice scrapers, and check real-time local forecasts.
- Understand check-in requirements and incidental holds. Most U.S. hotels require a government photo ID and a credit or debit card, with a typical pre-authorization hold of $50 to $150 USD. Prepaid or virtual cards frequently are not accepted at check-in; verify acceptable payment types in advance.
- Budget for Minnesota's combined lodging and sales taxes. Your bill will include state sales tax (6.875%) plus local Hennepin County/Minneapolis lodging taxes for a total of about 14-15%. For example, a $100 room incurs $14 to $15 tax (total $114 to $115). Confirm the total price with all fees before booking, and check for surcharges during major events.
- Verify Wi-Fi reliability and dedicated workspaces. Business travelers should confirm the hotel offers high-speed Wi-Fi and a suitable work area or a business center. Some chains charge for premium Wi-Fi speeds; check guest reviews and property details to ensure you get the service you need.
- Book early when major events are scheduled. Hotels near Crystal Airport and across Minneapolis fill quickly during the Minnesota State Fair in August and Vikings games. Sellout rates are highest in late August and on NFL home weekends. Major chains like Marriott, Hilton, and IHG let loyalty members reserve early with flexibility.
- Coordinate with the Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) if you are a pilot. Arrange FBO services (tiedown, hangar, fuel, crew car) in advance, and confirm your ground transport and hotel timing 24-48 hours ahead, especially during peak events. Some hotel brands offer guaranteed wake-up calls or express checkout for early flights.
- Use flexible booking options and loyalty programs if your plans may change. Many top chains allow same-day cancellation or no-fee changes for loyalty members. Compare the nightly rate difference between flexible and non-refundable options.
- Ask hotel staff for local tips and transit advice. The front desk or concierge can recommend nearby restaurants, grocery stores, or the most efficient routes to downtown Minneapolis, MSP Airport, or attractions like Minnehaha Falls and Mall of America. Some properties offer digital concierge apps and printed transit maps or discount cards.
- Prioritize basic hotel safety measures. Always use deadbolts and peepholes, store valuables in the safe, and check visitor identities before opening doors. For late arrivals or solo travelers, request a well-lit parking spot or a room near the exit, and choose a property with 24-hour security or keycard-only floor access.
- Understand U.S. tipping customs for hotel staff. Standard tips are $2 to $5 per night for housekeeping (left daily), $1 to $2 per bag for bellhops, and $2 to $5 when your car is returned by valet. Some chains allow tips to be charged to your room; check with staff and local regulations.
- Confirm accessibility accommodations in advance if needed. U.S. hotels must offer accessible rooms, and major chains like Marriott and Hilton often have enhanced features such as step-free access, roll-in showers, and visual alarms. Ask for written confirmation of available features before arrival.
- Check current health and COVID policies before your stay. Major hotel groups post their cleaning and safety protocols online. For the latest regional guidance, check the CDC or Minnesota Department of Health. Ask if housekeeping services are reduced for short stays.
- Consider amenities tailored to your traveler type. Families benefit from suites, fridges, free breakfast, laundry, and pools; Homewood Suites and Embassy Suites are family-friendly. For pet owners, check size limits and extra fees at brands like Kimpton. Solo travelers should review 24-hour desk coverage and neighborhood safety.
- Verify payment options and request itemized receipts for expense reporting. Business travelers should ask for all charges to be itemized on the receipt and request a digital or emailed copy for records. If using a debit card, confirm the hotel's hold policy. Many chains offer express checkout with instant digital invoicing.
