Top Tips
- Book 6-8 weeks ahead of the Pacific National Exhibition or similar major events to avoid 40-50% price surges - advance rates can be $15 to $30 CAD lower per night. Confirm flexible cancellation policies, especially if you are traveling internationally.
- Most hotels add 12% HST and up to a 3% municipal fee to your bill; final totals are 12-15% higher than base rates. Earn 1-2% in credit card rewards, but international cards may incur foreign transaction fees - verify acceptance before arrival.
- Select hotels within 0.5-1.5 km of Metrotown SkyTrain station to save 10-15 minutes per trip into Vancouver and benefit from well-lit streets and 24/7 security. SkyTrain stations in Metro Vancouver feature step-free access and elevators, supporting accessible travel.
- Check for Wi-Fi speeds of at least 50-100 Mbps - 70% of Burnaby hotels offer fiber-optic connections, supporting remote work or streaming. Request upper-floor or accessible rooms to reduce street noise during 7 AM-10 PM traffic; inform staff of any specific access or sensory needs during booking.
- Pack waterproof gear for the 200-300 mm monthly rainfall from November to March and seek hotels with covered parking to avoid 5-10 minute wet walks to your car. Some hotels offer in-room drying racks or loan umbrellas - ask at check-in during rainy periods.
- Withdraw cash at local ATMs like Scotiabank or RBC in Burnaby to save 1-2% on fees versus airport exchanges, with average withdrawal costs of $2-$4 CAD (approx. $1.50-$3 USD). Major branches and most Canadian ATMs provide step-free access and multilingual prompts; locate these features in-branch or online if needed.
