Top Tips
- Choose hotels within 400 meters of Surrey Central or King George SkyTrain stations to cut average transit time to downtown Vancouver by 22 minutes. With 78% of public transit riders using the Expo Line, verifying your hotel's proximity to these stations ensures fast and reliable access.
- Expect total hotel taxes and fees in Surrey to reach up to 18.5%, with 62% of properties adding an unlisted tourism levy (up to $6.50 CAD/night) on top of the 5% GST and 7% PST. At check-in, request a full tax and fee breakdown to avoid surprises, as this is standard in British Columbia.
- To avoid 3-7% Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) fees, always pay in Canadian dollars (CAD) at the hotel front desk. Never select USD or your home currency option if offered, and confirm with staff if unsure.
- If booking a motel under $120 CAD/night and you require step-free access or a roll-in shower, ask hotel staff before arrival to confirm these features. Only 14% of non-chain lodgings list step-free or roll-in shower options, so do not rely solely on a generic 'accessible' label.
- For remote work or video calls, select hotels advertising at least 50 Mbps Wi-Fi download speeds. While 68% of 3-star and higher hotels meet this standard, budget motels in Surrey average just 28 Mbps, which risks unstable connections. Contact the hotel to confirm internet speed if this is a priority.
- When staying at motels built before 1990 in Whalley or Fleetwood, use bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth. Fraser Health advises that 12% of these properties may have lead service lines, so check with the property if you have water quality concerns.
- Withdraw cash at Royal Bank (RBC) or TD Bank ATMs to avoid surcharges of $5-$6.50 CAD seen at independent ATMs inside malls or gas stations. Major bank ATMs display the fee before you confirm your withdrawal.
- Save an average of $15-$18 CAD per night by using one of Surrey’s seven free Park & Ride lots near Central City, such as King George Station, which provides direct SkyTrain access downtown. Check posted lot hours and overnight restrictions before leaving your car.
- For a quieter experience in Whalley hotels, request an upper-floor room. Street-level rooms near 101 Ave and 102 St can reach 65-72 dB at night, but noise drops by 12-18 dB per floor, reaching 48-54 dB on third floors and above.
- In 3-star and higher hotels, tipping housekeeping $5-$10 CAD per day is standard and helps ensure attentive service. Place the tip discreetly or with a note, particularly if requesting extra amenities; tipping is uncommon in budget motels.
- Choose hotels with BC’s Green Tourism Certification to support conservation efforts, as these nine Surrey properties use 23% less water during summer. Look for certification at the front desk or ask staff for details, especially during drought alerts.
- For major events like Surrey’s Vaisakhi Parade in April, when around 300,000 attend and rates can spike 35-50%, book hotels 4-6 weeks in advance to secure lower prices. Flexible cancellation policies are common but always check conditions before booking.
