Where to stay in Toronto
Learn about the top neighbourhoods of Toronto
Located just south of the University of Toronto campus, this exciting area is home to world-class arts and entertainment venues, an array of restaurants and nightlife and a number of sports facilities both above ground and underground. Cheer on the Toronto Blue Jays and Argonauts at the Rogers Centre or the Maple Leafs, Raptors and Rock at the nearby Air Canada Centre. Visitors can explore the breathtaking PATH, or Torontos Underground City, a 16-mile retail and shopping concourse underneath the financial core, with connecting office towers, hotels and public transport.
Stretching from the beloved Allan Gardens and Ryerson University to the waterfront, this southeast downtown Toronto area is home to Old Town, which dates back to Toronto's beginnings in the early 19th century. Popular amongst shoppers and art lovers, the area is home to cobblestone streets, the sprawling foodie-friendly St. Lawrence Market, the major transportation hub known as Union Station and the popular Eaton Centre shopping and dining destination.
Spanning the University of Toronto campus to the very upscale Yorkville, this downtown Toronto area is home to such highlights as the Royal Ontario Museum, the peaceful Queens Park, set around the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, and the glamorous Mink Mile stretch, lined with designer shops and fine dining. Visitors are also within easy reach of Ryerson University and such downtown favorites as the Eaton Centre, a shopping and dining destination modeled after European indoor gallerias.

Top Tips
- Factor Toronto's lodging taxes into your budget. Expect approximately 17.6% of the base room rate (13% provincial HST plus 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax). These rates are standard across Ontario, but confirm your final bill with the hotel when booking, especially during peak periods or when using third-party sites. To compare nightly totals, multiply the rate by 1.176.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) and select billing in CAD at both physical and mobile hotel point-of-sale terminals to avoid a typical 1-5% markup above your card issuer’s currency conversion fee. Confirm your choice with front desk staff if unsure.
- Book 60-120 days ahead for central hotels during major events like the Toronto International Film Festival (Sept), Pride (June), Canadian National Exhibition (Aug), and large conventions. Rates often increase by 100% or more during these periods. Sign up for hotel email alerts or loyalty programs, as some chains send exclusive advance deals for event dates.
- Base your stay near Union Station if quick airport or rail access is important. The UP Express connects Pearson Airport to Union Station in about 25 minutes, saving 20-40 minutes on transfers for hotels within a 5-8 minute walk. Many hotels nearby also offer complimentary luggage storage, making early arrival or late departure easier if using the UP Express.
- Confirm specific accessible room features, such as step-free access, roll-in showers, grab bars, and bedside visual alarms, with older boutique hotels before booking. Contact the hotel’s accessibility coordinator or request written confirmation that the required features are guaranteed, as not all heritage properties provide standardized amenities.
- Check for Green Key certification or similar if sustainability matters to you. This third-party audit covers energy, water, and housekeeping practices. At check-in, ask about the hotel’s sustainability program, as many major Toronto hotels also support local food sourcing and waste reduction.
- Toronto tap water is potable and meets municipal standards. Use a reusable bottle or ask the front desk for a filtered pitcher to avoid $3-$6 CAD (approx. $2.20-$4.40 USD) bottled water mini-bar charges. All major hotel chains provide complimentary tap water in rooms or at public dispensers, reducing single-use plastic waste.
- Verify Wi-Fi pricing and business options before booking. Many downtown hotels charge for 'premium' Wi-Fi or cap free tiers; confirm if high-speed or wired access is complimentary to avoid surprise $15-$25 CAD (approx. $11-$18 USD) daily fees. Business travelers should also ask about business center access or in-room workspace, as Wi-Fi fees may be waived for loyalty members or during conferences.
- Expect differences in elevator and room sizes by neighborhood. Yorkville and King West luxury hotels usually offer larger rooms, while boutique options in Queen West or Old Town may have smaller layouts. Several chains publish average room size details on their websites; compare square meterage before booking to match your space needs.
