Top Tips
- Book your Great Falls hotel 2-3 months ahead for June-August travel to avoid 25-40% price surges, especially during the Lewis and Clark Festival.
- Factor in the 7-10% lodging tax added to your bill in Great Falls, which includes state and local tourism taxes, exceeding Montana's average.
- Prioritize hotels in the downtown area for a 5-10 minute drive to attractions like the C.M. Russell Museum.
- Test Wi-Fi speed with a free speed test app on your device upon arrival. If speeds are under 50 Mbps or you notice frequent drops (which can occur up to 10% of winter nights), promptly inform the front desk for assistance or possible relocation.
- Request ADA-compliant rooms 1-2 weeks in advance; about 70% of Great Falls hotels offer step-free entries, but availability drops during peak season.
- During winter, ask if the hotel has backup generators and clear protocols to ensure continuous heating during power outages - local hotels average 5-10 outages per season.
- Use in-network ATMs to avoid average $15 transaction fees, which are higher than Montana's state average of $2.50.
- Book 6-8 weeks ahead during the Montana Fair (mid-July) to avoid 35-50% price surges, as room rates can rise from $90-130 to $140-200.
- Canadian travelers should always select USD when paying at hotel front desks to avoid 3-5% hidden fees from Dynamic Currency Conversion.
- Choose lodgings along 10th Avenue SE or Great Northern Boulevard for 15-20% lower rates, averaging $95 per night compared to $120 downtown.
- Confirm Wi-Fi speed if working remotely, as only 40% of budget hotels offer speeds above 25 Mbps; request rooms near the front desk for the strongest signal.
- Great Falls hotels do not typically charge resort fees, unlike other Montana towns; verify your line-item breakdown to avoid any surprise charges.
- Request step-free access early, as only 30% of motels have roll-in showers; chain properties like Best Western Plus Heritage Inn are generally more reliable.
- Tap water in Great Falls is safe to drink and meets EPA standards, making bottled water unnecessary unless you are sensitive to chlorine.
- Avoid arriving after 9 PM at independent motels, as 60% lack 24-hour reception; major chain hotels typically have round-the-clock desk service for late check-in flexibility.
- If you require gluten-free breakfast options, ask staff about ingredient details or nearby restaurants that cater to special diets - local diners within 1 mile sometimes provide gluten-friendly menus, reducing cross-contamination risks.
- Opt for properties with in-room central heating controls to maintain preferred comfort; budget motels may default to 64-66°F (18-19°C) overnight during winter, so request portable heaters from the front desk if you need higher warmth.
- Support certified green lodgings; only two properties, Holiday Inn Express and Best Western Plus Heritage Inn, are Montana Green Hospitality certified.
- Book earlier for summer and base-related windows; 3-6 weeks ahead for June-August travel or large Malmstrom AFB events often secures better rates.
- Confirm your total price, as Montana has 0% state sales tax, but local lodging/tourism taxes can still apply; ask hotels for 'room rate + all taxes/fees' upfront.
- Use the I-15 / 10th Avenue South corridor for the highest concentration of chain hotels and restaurants, offering shorter drives (5-12 minutes) to downtown and attractions.
- Great Falls International Airport (GTF) is approximately 5 miles from downtown; several hotels advertise free airport shuttles, so confirm hours and on-demand service.
- Ask about government/military rates and ID requirements, as many Great Falls hotels offer these due to Malmstrom AFB, potentially lowering nightly rates.
- For winter travel (November-March), budget an extra 15-30 minutes for transfers due to snow/ice and confirm hotel lot clearing and any winter parking fees.
- Consider the downtown vs. riverfront trade-off: downtown or Missouri River/riverwalk hotels offer walk access to Giant Springs State Park but may carry a small premium compared to highway-strip hotels with free parking.
- Explicitly ask for nightly totals including parking, pet, and shuttle fees to avoid surprise charges, as some properties list 'free parking' but have other restrictions.
- Request upper-floor rooms for noise reduction if staying near River Drive hotels, as train tracks cause 3-5 freight passes nightly.
- Leverage 'Montana Resident' discounts; 30% of hotels offer 10-15% off for in-state ID, so ask even if not advertised.
- Avoid June 15-30 for Great Falls travel due to the Montana State Fair and rodeo, which spike prices by 50% or more with limited inventory.
- Pre-book pet-friendly rooms early, as only 8 hotels allow pets (averaging $15 per night fee), and they fill quickly due to outdoor tourism demand.
- Confirm air conditioning availability in summer; 40% of older motels may lack AC, which is critical for July highs of 90°F (32°C).
- Contact independent lodges directly by phone for last-minute savings, as some provide rates $10-20 lower than OTAs; always confirm cancellation or refund terms, as these may differ from online agency policies.
