Frequently Asked Questions
Top Tips
- Hotels in the Bole and Kazanchis districts are 10-25 minutes (3-7 km) from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport by car, making them suitable for early or late flights and travelers attending African Union or UN meetings nearby. Compare transfer times at different hours if you arrive late or during peak periods.
- Hotel rates in Addis Ababa typically exclude 15% VAT and an additional 10% service charge, so expect your final bill to increase by around 25% over base rates. Verify whether online booking platforms quote rates inclusive of taxes before confirming.
- Hotel-arranged airport transfers help travelers avoid taxi fare negotiation at Bole International Airport. Costs are usually fixed and billed to your room. Confirm transfer availability and price in advance, particularly if you arrive after 22:00.
- Carry enough Ethiopian Birr (ETB) and a backup bank card. While international hotels accept major cards, many guesthouses, markets, and taxis in Addis Ababa operate cash-only. ATMs can be limited outside major hotels, so identify nearby cashpoints before excursions.
- Purchase and activate an Ethio Telecom SIM card at the airport for easy access to 4G data in the city. Passport registration is required, and airport kiosks usually provide faster setup than most city branches.
- Most 4-5 star hotels in Addis Ababa maintain 24/7 power. Mid-range and budget options may schedule generator use during outages. If you need uninterrupted power for medical devices or business, confirm '24/7 generator' with your hotel before arrival.
- Tap water in Addis Ababa is not potable. Hotels and restaurants typically provide bottled water with meals and in rooms. Check with reception about your daily quota if you require extra bottles.
- Addis Ababa’s altitude of approximately 2,355 m (7,726 ft) can cause mild shortness of breath or fatigue on arrival. Limit strenuous activity for your first 24-48 hours to allow for gradual acclimatization.
- Malaria is rare in Addis Ababa due to the elevation (about 2,355 m), and preventive medication is generally not needed for short city stays. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance if traveling to lower regions outside the city.
- Older hotels and guesthouses may lack elevators or step-free access. If you or your companions require accessible rooms or mobility support, request written confirmation of elevator or accessible-room availability before booking.
- Tip hotel staff 5-10% for good service unless a 10% service charge is already added to your bill. Porter tips typically range from 20-50 ETB (approx. $0.35-$0.90 USD), so carry small notes for convenience.
- Hotel demand spikes during African Union and United Nations conferences, with major events filling rooms citywide. Book 4-8 weeks in advance for these periods to secure your preferred hotel and rate.
