Top Tips
- Berlin applies an Übernachtungssteuer (overnight city tax) of 5% directly to the room rate. Hotels list this tax on invoices or collect it at check-out, making it easier to compare total costs across properties. Confirm if your quoted rate includes this tax when booking.
- For efficient airport transfers, use the Flughafenexpress (FEX/RE) train from BER Airport to Hauptbahnhof; the journey takes 30-35 minutes. Taxis to central districts take 35-45 minutes and cost €45-€55 (approx. $49-$60 USD), with possible delays in peak traffic. Check train schedules in advance if arriving late.
- To minimize sleep disruption on weekend nights, avoid hotels directly on Warschauer Straße or Simon-Dach-Straße, as nightlife in Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain is loud after 22:00 on Friday and Saturday. For quieter nights, book across the canal or in Prenzlauer Berg or Charlottenburg.
- Altbau (Gründerzeit era) buildings are common for hotels in Berlin and may lack elevators. If accessibility or heavy baggage is a concern, confirm step-free access or request a ground-floor room ('Aufzug' means elevator in German) before arrival.
- Hotel breakfasts in Berlin typically cost €8-€20 (approx. $9-$22 USD) per person. You can save €5-€15 (approx. $5-$16 USD) and time by stopping at a local bakery for a brezel and coffee, especially on busy mornings.
- Carry some Euro cash for smaller pensions and guesthouses. Many do not accept international credit cards or may not offer Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). When paying by card, select EUR billing to avoid extra charges.
- Demand and rates rise sharply during Berlinale (February) and major Messe events such as IFA, so book 6-12 weeks in advance for these periods. Compare refundable versus non-refundable rates for flexibility as well as possible savings.
- Smaller Berlin hotels may have limited reception hours and often close after 22:00. If arriving late, ask about self-check-in procedures and confirm any late check-in fees, typically €10-€30 (approx. $11-$33 USD).
- Berlin tap water is safe to drink. Request a refill at your hotel or bring a reusable bottle to save €2-€4 (approx. $2-$4 USD) per bottle and reduce single-use plastic.
- For official taxis from BER Airport, use marked taxi ranks or licensed app-based services. Standard airport fares apply. To lower the risk of overcharging, avoid offers from individuals inside the terminals.
- For eco-friendly stays, select hotels with Green Key Germany or Blauer Engel certifications. Filter your accommodation options by these certified properties to ensure sustainability claims are independently verified.
- Late check-out or early check-in fees at Berlin hotels often range from 25%-100% of one night's rate or are charged as a fixed fee. Request a written statement of any fees in advance to avoid surprises.
