This hotel was substandard in every conceivable way, based on the room I had been given. Nothing worked, there was no lighting save a single bulb, and there was no illusion of cleanliness , as there was crumbs and debris and garbage on all the surfaces¿.

Top Tips
- Book hotels along I-40 to quickly reach major Amarillo attractions. Cadillac Ranch is about 7 miles west and Palo Duro Canyon is roughly 25 miles southeast, so staying on this corridor reduces drive time for multi-stop trips. Most hotels here include complimentary onsite parking.
- Choose a hotel east or southeast of downtown to cut airport transfer time. Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport (AMA) is 8-10 miles away, typically a 15-20 minute drive. For morning flights, confirm with the hotel if they offer a scheduled airport shuttle and ask about early departure times.
- Prioritize hotels that provide free onsite parking, since Amarillo relies on car travel and public transit is limited. Saving on parking can help avoid daily lot fees, which are usually about $15 per day, and gives you flexibility for day trips to remote attractions like Palo Duro Canyon or the Big Texan Steak Ranch.
- Opt for flexible or refundable rates when visiting in spring (March-June) due to possible severe storms or tornadoes, or in winter (November-February) for occasional ice and snow. Weather may cause road closures or schedule changes. Confirm the property's cancellation policy before booking.
- Request an upper-floor room away from I-40 if you need a quiet space for rest or remote work. These locations reduce highway noise and may support more reliable Wi-Fi. Mention your needs during booking to help the property accommodate you.
- Compare downtown hotels with those in the I-40 cluster. Downtown puts you within a 5-10 minute walk of the Civic Center and local dining options but offers fewer properties overall, while I-40 hotels usually have lower nightly rates and more parking. For events, book downtown early due to limited availability.
- Allow 30-40 minutes to drive from central Amarillo hotels to Palo Duro Canyon, which is 25 miles south. On weekends or holidays, add 10-20 minutes for park entry and parking. Consider an early hotel breakfast to maximize your hiking time.
- Before booking an Amarillo motel, confirm pet policy details—including fees (often about $15 per pet), size limits, and request specific accessible room features like step-free access or visual alarms—in writing. This is especially important at older or exterior-corridor properties to avoid unexpected charges or accessibility gaps.
