Top Tips
- Book hotels 4 to 8 weeks ahead for Buffalo Bills home games at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park or major events at KeyBank Center. Rates typically spike 30-200% on weekends during these events. To avoid price surges affecting both Orchard Park and downtown Buffalo, compare rates early and review each hotel's event cancellation policy.
- From November to March, Buffalo averages 90-100 inches of lake-effect snow. Plan for possible travel disruptions by allowing 12 to 48 extra hours for flights or road trips around major storms. Always verify your hotel's storm or late-arrival policy in advance.
- Downtown Buffalo is a practical base for Niagara Falls trips, with the US side 20-30 miles (25-35 minutes’ drive) away in normal traffic. Prioritize hotels near I-190 or Canalside to reduce drive times, and consider hotel shuttle services or public transportation for flexible schedules.
- Suburban hotel chains around Buffalo typically include complimentary parking, while downtown and Canalside hotels often charge $15-$35 per night or direct guests to nearby paid garages. If you plan to drive frequently, double-check parking costs and availability for your specific location.
- Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) lies 15-25 minutes from downtown in standard conditions. Ride-share wait times and surge pricing commonly increase during major sports games or citywide events, so factor this into your arrival or departure planning.
- Request an accessible room when booking and confirm features like roll-in showers, elevator or ramp access, and visual alarms, especially in older or boutique properties. Not all hotels have identical accessible amenities; call ahead for specifics if you have unique needs.
- Buffalo’s municipal water, drawn from Lake Erie and fully treated, is safe for drinking and refilling bottles at hotels and restaurants. No need to purchase bottled water unless you have a specific preference.
