Good location and friendly staff.

Room and hotel were clean enough but quite shabby overall.

Location. We've stayed in this hotel a few times before in order to visit the Christmas Market - it is very convenient for the market and the cathedral. Since the change of brand the restaurant/bar menu is much better (but more expensive). Staff are very friendly (reception, bar, restaurant, housekeeping) - many staff are the same as before the change of ownership.

Before this year it has been a Mercure hotel, and last year we thought it was looking a bit tired. This year it has been acquired by a different chain (Sunday?) and they have started to make it a bit more "up-market" - a good start, but still a way to go - and the prices have increased accordingly - £153 for 1 night B&B last year for a "privilege room" (overlooking the cathedral - admittedly through my Accor membership) compared with £253 for 1 night B&B this year in a "standard double" room (overlooking the street). After checking out, we used to be able to leave our bags in the hotel luggage store for free while we spent an hour or two looking around the town and market - this year we were charged £5 for this.

Excellent location at the very heart of this historic city with all the key sites within short walking distance of the hotel. No time wasted and great when ever weather colder or wetter when you visit.

The staff could have informed me that my room rent included breakfast. I did not find this out until the day I was checking out - I was walking out of the hotel and getting breakfast/brunch elsewhere.

Excellent location, in a quiet road backing on to the Cathedral.The room was comfortable enough and facilities were as expected , but it all seemed a little run down and in need of TLC. .

The hotel is in need of updating- badly worn carpets in general areas, poor flush on WC and shower only adequate in our room.. The cooked breakfast offered only a limited choice, especially for vegetarians- with no menu to indicate alternatives. The bar was badly staffed and this reflected in its underuse. It has the feel of a once good hotel in decline , which I would suggest could be a combination of under investment and poor management.

Sufficient private parking right next to the Hotel.Good sized room (cosy double) for one.Had a fan in the room. Windows could be opened.

Rather tired bathroom. Small bath but good shower.Minimal staff around; had to hunt for a barman; only a couple of lagers on draft.

The beds were clean and the breakfast was good

The room had not been cleaned properly, especially around the tea/coffee area. The furniture in the room was tired to say the least and an upholstered chair that should have been removed it was so awful. The toiletries had been placed in the wrong place in the bathroom - too high to reach comfortably. Our room was not made up on the first day of our two day stay and when we asked why, we were told they do the rooms every 3 days - something we had not been told. They said we could put 'make up room' sign out but the room didn't have one.

Brilliant location in centre of town and close to Cathedral. Rooms rather dated but a good size. Bathroom also dated but everything worked. Staff very pleasant and helpful.

Tired rooms.Astronomical charge for a cooked breakfast that was not very good.Staff were all a bit vague and not really able to do much to help.

Actually nothing except the location

Almost everything.Not a friendly reception.Tired room - basin was disgusting. I have a photo.Bins outside were collected at around 05.00 and didn't get back to sleep thereafter Reception unmanned when I left at 07.45.

The Wessex is centrally located and ideal for exploring Winchester on foot. The bedroom was large and airy and everything was very clean and the room was quiet (apart from the cathedral bells gently chiming the quarter hours throughout the night, which some might find soothing). Because we only stayed one night and didn't eat or drink at the hotel we can't comment on the staff or these facilities.

We booked a double bed but it turned out to be two single mattresses pushed together on a king-size bed frame. It wasn't what we wanted or expected. The mattress was also much less comfortable than you find even in a Premier Inn and as a consequence we didn't have the best night's sleep. A couple of minor things: the bathroom door was jamming; the soap dispenser beside the wash basin was empty; the toilet handle needed adjusting and needed to be turned repeatedly to work. These are just minor maintenance items. The room was a very good size and otherwise comfortable.

Close to the train station and right beside the Cathedral.

Room wasn't ready to check into. Toilet inner back rim was disgusting. Stained sofa, chipped bath panel. Only 3 hangers for 2 of us. No sanitary bags in bathroom.

Small room, tired decorative order. Rather hard bed. Several rooms numbered 2xx not at same level as lift 2nd floor. Restaurant menu not exciting

It's a good location for the South Downs Way

The rooms are small and not well furnished so it's overpriced
