Sopwell House Hotel

Everything went well. My 10th or 11th stay, something I look forward to each year.

Reposition the shower seat so that the shampoo is reachable.

Lovely hotel for a city escape. Tastefully decorated rooms, delicious breakfast, wonderful spa, friendly staff, lovely grounds. REALLY good gym. The entire property is lovely. Really easy to get to from London using the train, and a nice 30 min walk from the station or a short bus.

All was good. Only note is that there's two spas inside the property, the more luxury one is paid for (over £100) OR you need to book the expensive suites to get access to it. The open to all spa is nice enough (like a normal hotel spa). I didn't get to visit the more luxury one.

Comfortable rooms, great service, good breakfast.

Our room was of a good size, nicely decorated, clean and well equipped. The bed was extremely comfortable and we slept very well. The staff are very attentive and when things weren't quite right (with our breakfast order), they were corrected very quickly. Room service was particularly good, much shorter wait times compared to any other hotel I've stayed at. Dinner at the brasserie was top notch. On the first day we used the Cottonmill spa with access provided as part of the room package...again these were excellent, but on our checkout day, we upgraded to the Club spa facilities - which are simply world class. Already looking at deals to come back later in the year - Sopwell is a gem.

What's not to like about Sopwell?I'd struggle to criticise it...ok, one thing, at a push I'd say the music used in the spa...well sometimes it's quite melancholic and occasionally bizarre. Spa music should be a bit more neutral and soothing! But honestly, that is just nit picking!!!

Loved the hotel. Spa, breakfast and staff were exceptional.

Didn't think the asian restaurant was worth the money. I didn't go to the cotton mill club as this seemed expensive for what it offered.

I liked the main older parts of the building. The decor was beautiful in all of the old building. The ‘inclusive’ spa was very clean tidy and neat. It’s literally a pool, a couple of tubs and a steam/sauna. Not really a proper spa unless you pay an exorbitant amount of money on top of your room. The staff in the octagon bar were extremely professional and welcoming and clearly knew their cocktails. A pleasure to watch them at work. Breakfast was nice enough but brasserie food for lunch was limited and underwhelming

The additions to the property with the new brick looked cheap and nasty and did not flow or match with the aesthetic. The corridor with the sports t shirts were out of place and had no purpose. We nicknamed it sports direct alley. Spa reception staff were superior and slightly arrogant.

I’ve been here quite a few times now and it’s always as expected. Great facilities, good food and clean and comfy rooms.

Breakfast was v good. Lots of options and variety. Room was good and bed was comfortable.

Had mixed experiences with the staff. Front of house reception was excellent when checking in. But further interactions with staff were not as good. They were functional without being great. It’s as though they’ve been trained to do a job, but offer no further interaction. Friendly interaction makes a stay more memorable, and good memories mean more likely of a revisit. We did have to change rooms. Quite noisy in corridor at night and not greatest nights sleep.

I went for the chic room and was over £330 per night bed and breakfast. I thought for what I paid the room was far too small and had no fridge. My friends complained and were given a room almost 1/2 as big again as our room.

Rooms were lovely; furnishings very tasteful, fantastic shower. Bed was super comfortable.Spa facilities were excellent; we were lucky with the weather and could even make use of the loungers outside.Lots of lovely areas to lounge in and relax.Buffet breakfast was very good, the staff were knowledgeable about allergies and there was a dedicated 'free from' section.

We had requested adjacent rooms but our rooms were on completely different floors.We had also mentioned it we were celebrating a 40th birthday and no mention of this/gesture was made.No telephone call prior to our stay to check information. No fridge in room, though we did ask and a (tiny) fridge was brought up to our room. As above, the spa was lovely but I would have expected their to have been a member of staff keeping an eye on the facilities, moving on used towels, used glasses, rubbish etc.

Not much for coeliac considering price tag

Hotel is decorated very well and lovely warm welcome from reception when arrived. Nice to see the hotel is renovating the hallways and rooms, looking after the property. The breakfast room atmosphere and offering is also very good.

Service was hit or miss in main bar and omboo restaurant. In the bar, the waiter and waitress didn’t really know what they were doing or the menu. I asked for a bottle of champagne and got a glass. Beer was serviced without a fresh glass and used glasses were left on the table unless I requested them to be taken away. Whilst the food and atmosphere was nice in omboo, it didn’t match the price of the £488 bill (4ppl 2 omboo set & 2 classic, 2 bottles of wine). The waiters had a habit of leaning over the table into guests when serving. At one point squishing my knees together to get past. I understand each course arrives when ready but timings could have been managed better. I can go to a Michelin stay restaurant or Ivy Asia in London and pay £125 or less for their set menu and get much better service and food. Overall experience was underwhelming, style over substance. If I reflect on the total bill (dinner, bed and breakfast) it is comparable in price to the Limewood hotel in the Newforest but no where near the same standards which is a real shame. In addition, I can check out and use the spa post check without having to pay £30 per hour.

It was very relaxing and calm My daughter and I enjoyed the Cotton mill spa facilities . Clara was amazing she made our experience in the Omboo restaurant very enjoyable ??

We struggled with finding something to eat in the main restaurant there was not much variety to choose from .

The hotel and spa were impeccably decorated and even though there was work going on in the hotel it was sparkling clean The staff were helpful and lovely All the lounge and bar areas were tastefully decorated The spa was spotless and well maintained

We were in a chic room the actual bedroom was lovely, The bathroom sink didn’t empty and it was a little shabby in general for the price

Our room was located above some kind of skip/bins parked outside and it seemed that it was getting filled up between midnight and 12.30am making it so noisy to sleep. There was lots of doors banging outside our room too. Quite frustrating

The welcome by staff and the check out was pleasant with very friendly staff. The room was quiet and we did enjoy a good nights sleep.

The hotel is certainly not worth €455 per night. It has something of a faded glory as a former footballers training retreat. I stayed several years ago and not much had been improved so the hotel felt a little outdated, and in need of refresh. The spa facilities were overcrowded and there were no sunbeds as these were all taken. The spa assistant rather sniffily informed us that we didn’t have access to the private club facilities. So it was not a very relaxing spa moment and we left after a quick sauna and swim. There is no minibar in the room only still water and tea/coffee. The breakfast was again overcrowded also with many people wearing spa bathrobes and not relaxed at all but the quality of the breakfast was good. Finally, there was a wedding conference event on during our stay and we had to walk through this event being constructed to reach our room in the annex. On two occasions I witnessed one male member of staff almost shouting and seemingly verbally dressing down two separate members of staff for not doing things properly - one involved putting two chairs against a recently painted wall and the other related to leaving materials lying around. It was really not on to do this in front of guests. Bottom line the hotel is holding itself out at a high point in the market that is not really commensurate with the actual offering. For that price we would expect proper country house style bedroom and lodgings rather than standard premier inn style bedroom/bathroom lay out (the shower was tiny) together with a much more luxurious and quality service offering.

We were told they were refurbing their bar/lounge before we arrived so we were prepared, but put us in a room that meant going up to the second floor in the lift, walking to the other end of the hotel, then down 4 flights of stairs, and the same in reverse to get to the spa, reception and breakfast- surely it made more sense to put all guests in rooms closer to the main areas? The hotel was nowhere near full so this option was available.

The spa

The inflexibility of the restaurant despite having free tables, the fact we had to rush our spa because of it. The key fob didn’t work and we had to change it 5 times. At breakfast the beans container lid malfunctioned causing it to slam shut and cover me in beans and red sauce. The chlorine in the pool caused bloodshot in my left eye.
