About

Istoria, a Member of Design Hotels, is an beautiful 21-suite retreat set across two distinctive locations, the black-sand shores of Perivolos and the dramatic caldera of Santorini, offering two unique ways to experience the island. With Istoria Beach in Perivolos and Istoria Cliff in Firostefani, guests can choose between the grounding energy of the Aegean Sea and the dramatic beauty of Santorini’s caldera, two settings brought together by the same contemporary Cycladic design and authentic Greek spirit. Istoria Beach features 12 intimate suites set directly on the famous black-sand beach of Perivolos. Surrounded by volcanic landscapes and the deep blue of the Aegean, it offers a relaxed seaside escape with earthy interiors, private pools or hot tubs in most suites, and direct access to the beach. Guests can enjoy modern Greek and Mediterranean cuisine at Mr. E Restaurant, as well as restorative treatments inspired by the island at Elios Spa. Istoria Cliff, in the peaceful village of Firostefani, consists of 9 elegant cave-style suites carved into the volcanic landscape of the caldera. Overlooking the Aegean Sea and Santorini’s iconic volcanic landscape, the suites offer a sense of tranquility and connection to the island’s geology and light. Guests staying at Istoria Cliff also have access to the facilities and experiences at Istoria Beach, located 8.1 mi away and connected by shuttle service. Istoria Beach is conveniently located 7.5 mi from Santorini (Thira) Airport and 6.8 mi from Athinios Port. Istoria Cliff is conveniently located 4.3 mi from Santorini (Thira) Airport and approximately 6.2 mi from Athinios Port. Whether by the sea or above the caldera, Istoria invites guests to experience Santorini at their own pace, through thoughtful design, authentic Greek hospitality, distinctive landscapes and the freedom to create their own story.

    Pros +

    • Very boutique, elegant, private. Peaceful, staff very attentive.
    • The staff at Istoria are incredible! so friendly and accomodating, we couldn't thank them enough. Amazing room and pool!
    • Excellent breakfast options and great staff. Pool was serene and relaxing.

    Cons -

    • Had a constant noise transmitted from above to our room (#7), probably from pump of hot tub above.Ran out of water one morning without warning. Warning would have been helpful.Could not read the labels on the bottles (shampoo, conditioner, body wash) in the shower. Figured it out and kept them in same location during stay.
    • Staff tried to give us a lower room than what we booked and we had a very frustrating time having to argue with them to get what we reserved.
    • Salty water running from the shower and the taps.

Location, style/decor, and the black sand beachfront.

Staff tried to give us a lower room than what we booked and we had a very frustrating time having to argue with them to get what we reserved.

Our stay at this hotel was truly unforgettable. The hotel is a gem right on the beach, which might be the best beach on the island, with its pristine black sand and crystal-clear dark blue water. The large, beautiful pool only adds to the sense of luxury and relaxation. Every detail in this hotel is thoughtfully designed, enhancing its overall charm and elegance.Breakfast was a highlight as well - an exceptional culinary experience that matched the high standards set by the rest of the hotel. Every meal was a delight, reflecting the hotel’s dedication to quality. The staff were incredibly friendly and professional, taking care of us with such attention and warmth. They really go out of their way to make sure you feel completely relaxed and cared for, which is something we’ll remember for a long time. This is easily one of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at, and we can’t wait to come back.

Salty water running from the shower and the taps.

The property was clean, tidy, fancy, stylish, and comfy.Breakfasts were great - we were ordering new meals and drinks from the menu every time. Kudos to the chef!Personnel were really helpful and caring. Spa personnel were pros.Facilities around the hotel. e.g. the pool and the restaurant were also very convenient. Location was perfect and right on the beach. I also enjoyed the pool at the backyard of our room - the water was always warm and clean.Small presents from time to time were also very pleasant to receive!

Salty water running from the shower and the taps. Looks like some other hotels figured out how to deal with this.

Beautiful comfortable facility on the beach. Excellent guest service .

Ticked every single box. Staff went above and beyond. Slept 12 hours on the most comfortable hotel bed of my life. The breakfast is al a carte & was included (I only wish we stayed longer so I could have tried all the dishes)

Amazing staff incredibly helpful, friendly and attentive. Great restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Private beach across the street, one of the best on the island. Pool area beautiful and a lovely spa.

Private pool in the room is actually a jacuzzi which doesn’t cool so not ideal for the middle of summer! Room stylish, but very basic for the price.

thé design creating a really cocoon atmosphere, the pool is one of the most beautiful I ever sawthe breakfast was very very good and so nice not to have a buffet very helpful staff with the reservations

nice staff but a bit non professional, we were often disturbed in our room despite a clear sign on the door, employees were very loud around the pool, the diner experience was underwhelming to say the least ( not so tasty food, pricy and we didn’t get to order desert, the chef had already left…). the location is not that great and the surroundings are lacking and unfortunately you see them from your terrasse

Front desk services was absolutely amazing. The rooms was stylish, yet comfortable. The pool and beach area was excellent. Isabella at the front desk made us feel so welcome and taken care off. She ensured that our stay in Santorini was just perfect and that we had such a great experience.

Cocktails a bit too expensive compared to the rest of the island.

Fantastic breakfast, great location, beautiful aesthetic, mostly nice staff.

We paid almost €2k for 3 nights (€650pn) for the most basic ‘suite’, which was called the Saga Suite - and it was just a normal room. It looked over to the hotel pool next door and had a cleaning cupboard next to it, so there was lots of noise. When we checked in I saw that there was a much better suite called Recit with a private pool which was less money than we had spent - this frustrated me. Surely booking in advance should secure the best deal? I asked about this and if we could change rooms and coincidently the room vanished from the website and booking.com because someone had apparently booked it.I understand Istoria want all rooms sold, but to sell one of the best rooms in the hotel for less money than a current customer has paid for the most basic room, is a sure way to leave them feeling hard done by.I had also informed Istoria prior to arrival that we would arrive at 12pm but they made us wait until 3pm on the dot until we were allowed to check into a room. They only have 12 rooms and we were only one of a few guests to check in that day, so prioritising a room for guests they know are arriving early would have been nice. We had just come from Aperto Suites in Fira who allowed us into our room from 11am and provided exceptional service.Ultimately the customer service is what let this hotel down for us. Had they allowed us to check in an hour early and recognised that we were paying a premium price for a basic room and changed our room accordingly, we would have enjoyed this better. We feel we overpaid.

Super helpful and kind staff, amazing food, beautiful and comfortable rooms

    10OliverPosted on: 5-23-2023

Everyone was extremely genuinely friendly, which seems to be the way in the Cyclades. Of course, the breakfast was amazing, and it was in an open-air space protected from the sun. Actually, much of the hotel was open-air, including the reception desk. It was also just across the small road from the beach, and the hotel owns a stretch of beach just for the guests. It is well located to catch the sunrise, which can be spectacular, and even just walking around the neighborhood is interesting as there are a number of small farms and the like. Some ways down the beach are some excellent restaurants. You don't need a car at all if you are just coming to relax. The masseuse at the hotel did an excellent job on me. She could really dig in and get the knots out of my muscles. After my session, I didn't have any aches or pains at night as I otherwise so often do.

The food and experience were great! This was the last leg of our trip and it was nice to wind down with a massage and relaxation/drinks by the pool! We loved all the staff, especially the bartenders!! The drink and food menu had plenty to pick from. The hotel made several accommodations for us, which was very helpful, including taxi rides to and from Oia. Would highly recommend this hotel!
