Pros +
- Very luxurious and felt secluded. It was truly an oasis.
- Very relaxing.
- We loved how secluded and tropical the property was, even though it is relatively close to Tulum Centro! The rooms were beautiful, and our private plunge pool was heated, so we ended up relaxing in it most nights.
Cons -
- The rooms were super dimly lit and you could barely see anything at night with all the lights on. There wasn¿t a place to even buy a bottle of water on the property and I found it extremely overpriced for what it was.
- Everything was fine, but the restaurant and bar prices are exorbitant compared to what you can get outside the hotel; also, the pool can't be used at this time of year (November) because the water is quite cold and there's no heater in either the main pool or the rooms.
- It's not their fault but the mosquitoes are brutal when it's hot and humid! Made it difficult to enjoy most of the outdoor spaces like the bar and restaurant. We also wished we had a little more space to unpack without making the room a mess, but it wasn't a big deal.

The staff were extremely kind and helpful
The location is not great for the value of the property; mosquitoes are the problem; the hotel would offer a complimentary repellent, as other places we visited did.The hotel has only one small restaurant, and the quality and prices are not the best. There are no good restaurants nearby, and it’s not within walking distance of downtown as described. When we ordered a glass of wine, the first one was served in a large glass filled halfway, but the second was served in a smaller glass that wasn’t even half full — for the same price. The same happened with the food: the portions were smaller when we ordered the second time. Also, the private pool in our room wasn’t specified as being unheated — that was one of the main reasons we chose this hotel. Unfortunately, the water was too cold, so we couldn’t even enjoy the floating breakfast. The best part was the staff. They were very friendly and attentive.
Me and my wife stayed in hotel bardo for our honeymoon. . The rooms are large and spacious, they kept it really clean. The staff was really nice and helpful, and we had the villa with the private pool, which was really nice and romantic.
They sometimes shut the water in the rooms so you can't shower or even wash your face, and it could be at random times of the day. Second of all, the main pool, the big one, wasn't really clean. It had a lot of stuff coming down from the plants surrounding it, and they didn't really clean it. And the third thing was, it was a bit far from the city center and from the Zona Hotelera, so it's better to have a car with you
I can’t say enough good things about Hotel Bardo. The staff were phenomenal, especially the reception staff (Fernando, Leo). The main pool area has a perfect vibe with chill lower volume music, amazing cocktails, beautiful bar, excellent service. The villas are beautiful and I loved my private heated plunge pool and private little fenced yard space. I had room service for several meals and it was fantastic. I also ate a couple times in the restaurant area. The food is delicious. Quick service. Martin was a great server! During my visit in the area, I stayed at the beach half the time and this property for the other half. I honestly wish I’d have stayed at Bardo for my entire 8 night trip. I could seriously just hang out there all day. However, it depends on what type of vacation you are on. My purpose was truly to unplug and rest and recharge from my busy stressful job. This is a great place to stay for that purpose. I participated in the Temezcal ceremony on my first night and it was both reflective and challenging. The Shaman, Diego, was outstanding in guiding us through the dark, the heat and our senses and emotions. Highly recommended. Drink lots of water!
The yoga was a nice, but I wish they would have had flow classes when I was there as I needed a bit more exercise / movement there after all my long beach walks during the previous days.I found it very odd that the restaurant didn’t come retrieve the room service dishes automatically each day. I had to pile them up in my bathroom and hope that no bugs or lizards would find their way to them.Actually there was a lizard in my room one night and someone from the hotel quickly came to help me remove it (successfully) but then I realized at any time a lizard or big or snake or creepy crawly could have easily come in through the space around the outdoor shower glass door. I think that’s a poor design…especially for mosquito access guys! You need to fix that and seal it better!I did walk to town a couple days. And it was a short (not pretty)walk, less than 10 mins. I wasn’t too impressed with the town of Tulum, it needs a lot of work and upgrades. I preferred the shops and restaurants near the beach area. There is a garbage problem in the Tulum area which is really unfortunate. You will see it if you leave the hotel or resort / touristy areas. Garbage dumped randomly everywhere at the side of the road and in the trees and jungle. I have a really hard time seeing that and it just confirms how corrupt and unbalanced things are there. With the amount of tourism dollars coming into that area I would expect better sanitation. Don’t be shocked to see how incredibly poor that entire area is when you leave the glitz and glamour where the money is. However, I didn’t feel unsafe walking around in the daytime.Just a word of caution, many of the hotels, including this one, won’t allow you to flush your toilet paper, but rather expect guests to place it in a basket in the toilet room. This was a bit shocking to me but it is a third world country after all and they don’t have proper plumbing or infrastructure…even if you are paying $700/night.
Utterly beautiful, tranquil space to be. Everything was well designed and it was a really special place, especially at night. Staff were super friendly and accommodating and the food and wine were good.
Clean, beautiful and exactly what the pics look like. Not very close to the beach but the hotel is perfect! Enjoyed the activities too. The staff is sweet and always looking to help out with requests. Mara and Alejandro were outstanding! Thank you for a great time.
The hotel and surroundings are beautiful - our room was gorgeous and we had a lovely relaxing time..
Few pointers.. the hotel did take a holding amount on a credit card on arrival - wasn’t aware this would be the case.. Was charged what they called an environmental tax on leaving - we stayed at two other hotels also in Tulum which didn’t charge this..The hotel was very expensive to eat/drink hot drinks in- 2 lattes = 10.00., just to be aware. Maybe the offer of inclusive breakfast would be a good option to add .This didn’t spoil our holiday as gave us opportunity to explore some wonderful local restaurants .. and the local bakery at end of road.
This was one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever stayed. A wonderful place to switch off. It was really difficult to even leave the hotel each day! Loved the room design, the sense of privacy, the big swimming pool and the food! The staff were all so helpful and friendly!
Hotel Bardo immediately impresses with its secluded, jungle-inspired retreat concept. Tucked away on the outskirts of Tulum, it offers an intimate and tranquil atmosphere, enhanced by thoughtful architecture that seamlessly blends concrete, wood, and lush greenery. The villa-style accommodations provide complete privacy, featuring personal plunge pools and open-air showers—details that contribute to the overall sense of relaxation. The hotel’s 24/7 pool and soft lounge music add to the meditative, almost dreamlike atmosphere. As a dedicated "do-nothing" vacation, the hotel delivered on peace and serenity. However, a few key areas fell short of its high-end image.Standout Positives & Final VerdictDespite the food and service shortcomings, the hotel excels in its serene atmosphere, well-designed accommodations, and immersive retreat-like setting. The ability to swim at any time was an unexpected luxury, and the spa was a highlight—one of the best massages I’ve had. Expanding the wellness offerings could further elevate the experience.Hotel Bardo is close to being extraordinary. With a refined dining experience, more attentive service, and an expanded spa, it could easily achieve a truly seamless luxury retreat status. Would I return? If these aspects improve, absolutely—I’d book three weeks.
Food & Service: A Missed OpportunityThe most glaring disappointment was the food. While not bad, it was uninspired and lacked variety. Presentation, flavour, and creativity were all underwhelming, making it difficult to justify staying in for meals. This ultimately broke the immersion, as we often opted to eat elsewhere.Service was friendly but inconsistent. Miscommunications were frequent, even in Spanish, and small details were overlooked. For instance, room service trays were left uncleared for days, and orders were sometimes incorrect. While these issues were minor in isolation, they added up to a service experience that felt unpolished. My personal Rating: A+ (Very good, with clear potential to become pristine)
The property was beautiful - every detail was thought through, from the landscaping to the design of the pool to the gorgeous set up of the rooms themselves. While we ventured out for most meals, the on-site food was tasty and the fact that room service was only a WhatsApp message away made everything super easy.
We loved our stay at Hotel Bardo! The entire property is beautiful and so serene. The staff is so kind and caring and took excellent care of us. We barely felt the need to leave the property and spent most of our trip enjoying the awesome food and drinks by the pool. Would absolutely recommend and can’t wait to go back.
Beautiful setting with lots of greenery, really felt like you were in the jungle. It’s all semi open to the elements - including restaurant and bar which adds to the jungle vibe. Rooms are individual ‘suites’ with private access, small garden, outdoor plunge pool and outdoor shower. They are comfortable and beautifully designed. Food at breakfast excellent, and dinner and drinks were good. Staff were lovely and helpful.
Rooms are very dark and in places impractical. There was music late into the night, which explained the earplugs left on the bedside table! The location was out of the way and taxis are expensive. A shuttle or bikes would be helpful.
We LOVED this place and will be coming back! The fact that it is tucked back in the jungle and each suite was so secluded from all the others, we felt like we had the place to ourselves! The staff was over-the-top helpful and offered great recommendations! We loved the room and that the shower was outdoors :) The plunge pool was a great add and we felt 100% safe here. I practiced yoga in the shala and they offered a lot of classes and had excellent food/drinks at the restaurant. We rented a scooter for 2 days and had a blast exploring the city and cenotes this way. We also spent an entire day at the sister hotel, Milam, which was OUT OF THIS WORLD and free for Hotel Bardo guestss!! We booked a massage there and had the whole place to ourselves!! It was incredible!!!!
The one complaint I have about this place was that there wasn't coffee in the room. Although room service was available and quick to respond, we had to pay for every (tiny) french press we ordered. I think it was $6 USD for one small french press (equliant to 2 cups of coffee) and we ordered at least 3 each morning.
The grounds of the hotel are beautiful. We came to stay for a few nights for our honeymoon and had a fabulous time. The villa itself is comfortable, with a living room area, huge bed and gorgeous bathroom. The surrounding communal areas are also so beautiful and atmospheric, with a jungle theme. The pool is wonderful and sun loungers etc very comfortable. The staff are so welcoming and cannot do enough to make your stay exceptional. They are a real credit to Bardo. We had some lovely cocktails at the hotel bar too! The food and drink was very expensive which soon added up, so you do need to take that into consideration when staying here.
We had a private plunge pool outside our villa which, although a nice touch, wasn’t heated. The main pool is also not heated but gets enough sunlight to get a bit warmer. Unfortunately our villa outside area was shaded so the pool water stayed very cold during our entire stay, and therefore we didn’t use it during our stay. It would also have been nice if breakfast had been included as standard, which is usually the done thing in Europe when you stay at a luxury hotel. The price of the room is very expensive, so getting breakfast included in the price would be a nice touch.
Tranquil. Separated from hustle and bustle of the city
Poor lighting in the room. Restaurant was overpriced got my order wrong and charged me for bottled water that I did not even order
Amazing hotel from all aspects!!! The thinking of every little detail is everywhere.Even though it’s not in a prime location in tulum you don’t feel it because of the great facilities in the place. Don’t miss the wonderful activities the hotel offers, top quality team runs it!We really had a wonderful time and will be back again Thanks
