    Pros +

    • The accommodations were fantastic, the staff was so kind, and the property was gorgeous.
    • A true hidden gem. We booked at Mathis after a change of plans brought us to Ubud earlier that planned and it's probably the best decision we made about our trip. Firstly, the location is peaceful and easy enough to get to, a short scooter/taxi north of central Ubud town. It's located looking out onto rice fields and is beautifully designed with a decent swimming room and covered dining area. The bungalow we stayed in was immaculately clean, huge and with elegant interior decor. The food at the restaurant was great quality, cocktails reasonably priced and there's a brilliant selection of activities including a BBQ and acoustic music evening, feeding the ducks (who were an absolute charm to just observe in their duck house and pond) and more. We had a massage at the spa which was also good. And there's a yoga studio at the far end of the first rice field. The price was also very reasonable for the quality, but definitely one of the most stand-out factors was the lovely people hosting us. Every member of staff was so genuinely friendly, welcoming and kind. From the beginning, we just felt very well cared for. They recommended a local temple ceremony happening one night and told us what we needed to wear. We were almost the only westerners there observing a beautiful ceremony including music, dance and costumes which felt like the whole town attended. Magical. We will be recommending Mathis to everyone we talk to about our time in Bali and are very happy to recommend it more generally. Thanks to Bintang and all the staff for a truly memorable and beautiful experience.
    • The staff at the property was very responsive and very helpful. The property is well maintained and very charming with lovely view over the rice fields. It is located a bit outside the center which is perfect if you are looking to stay in a more quieter environments and there are still plenty of restaurants and cafe near by.

The view from the pool, very quiet area and the friendly staff.

The building is old and the rooms need updating. It would be nice to have an ironing board in the room or a clothes dryer to hang our wet swimsuits out. The restaurant is nice, but very overpriced.

The rice fields and the restaurant facing them are exceptional. We enjoyed the a la cart breakfast. The staff was kind, welcoming and receptive to our requests.

The pool could do with a bit more cleaning: the water had a white/grey hue (I'm not sure if it was from the chlorine) and there were organic remains in the water. The villas share a wall that offers no noise insulation: we could hear the next door guests plug stuff into their socket, conversation, TV, etc. The bathroom is separated from the bedroom by a courtain which doesn't cover the whole entryway: little to no privacy when taking a shower. No hand shower head which is a big negative for families with kids.

This place is absolutely beautiful. The yoga classes were excellent, and the photoshoot was such a lovely experience. There’s a deep sense of peace here—I spent Nyepi at the property and it was the perfect setting for it.The staff is incredibly kind and welcoming. My room was stunning, with a beautiful bathtub. The restaurant offers a wide variety of options, and everything I tried was delicious.I truly recommend this place!

Amazing facilities, super friendly and nice staff. Food at hotel was really good. Further away from Ubud central but thats what we wanted.

Got Here food poisening! Staff denied this :( we booked this hotel due to positive reviews about the hotel and food. Cant agree! Outdated hotel and staff not well trained. Was sick for a week after eating in the restaurant, terrible!!!!!

This is a beautiful little retreat away from the craziness of Ubud traffic. Its not a long trip into town maybe about 5mins taxi. Too far to walk. We hired a little scooter so it wasnt a problem for us. Absolutely loved waking up to the rice patties in the morning with the ducks quacking away in their little pond. The breakfast was lovely too. Our room was beautiful and bed super comfy. Would happily stay again. There is a great Swiss restaurant down the road well worth going to and a nice change from the normal Bali food options. Also a massage place not far from it too.

We requested at booking for twin beds, to arrive fairly early in the day and advised that they dont have any twin beds available and cant guarantee them as they sent an email confirming this which I didnt get time to read as travelling and many emails came from MATHIS. People request this option for a reason, it was a very uncomfortable 15mins as I absolutely did not want to be sharing a queen bed with my travel companion. We eventually sorted it out and we were upgraded to a beautiful room with sort of twin beds, ultimately we loved our stay.

An incredible location overlooking the beautiful rice fields north of Ubud center. The pool and restaurant are really good and the staff is sooo nice and welcoming.

The rooms are a bit old and worn. They lack soundproofing and there is a hint of a musty smell. We switched from a bungalow to a room due to noise from the neighbouring aircondition waking up our baby.

The best and friendly staff, nice pool and surroundings, nice rooms, good selection for breakfast and loved the complimentary activities.

    8AlexandraPosted on: 2-18-2025

The breakfast was very delicious. Kind and helpful staff. The hotel has a calm and peaceful atmosphere. Beautiful pool and garden area. It's around 10 min taxi away from the center of Ubud.

The room wasn't cleaned well. There was some hair on the bathroom floor from the previous guests. And the water pressure in the bathroom was very low.

Breakfast was great, and we love the location. this was our second visit to Mathis.

Had a little issue with no hot water for a short time.

Had a wonderful stay at the Mathis Retreat. Staff were so kind and very hospitable. A very quiet and relaxed location with beautiful rice field wiev. Food was absolutelly excelent - taste, styling and service. Great pool and a lot of activities - cooking classes, thematic dinners with live music, yoga, spa, duck feeding. A bit far from city center.

    Quiet location and nice pool.

Restaurant options for breakfast were limited for gluten free. Also free/smoothie açai bowls were non existent really and more options for these on the menu would have been lovely. Menu at night was also limited No iron and ironing board when attending wedding had to have my outfit pressed at hotel I was attending wedding at.this really wasn’t great. Hair dryer didn’t work but was replaced.

Beautiful ricd fields. Swimming Pool, duck feeding daily at 11am. Free shuttle service 3 times daily (11am, 2pm, 5pm) and pick up from Ubud central (11:30am, 2:30pm, 5:30pm). Really good Alacarte breakfast (various fruits, pastries, fruit juice, coffee or tea with Breakfast menu).

A bit far to walk to the city and don't like restaurants around the hotel.

    5KaushalPosted on: 1-25-2025

    Specious rooms, Friendly staff

We had no pressure in shower, when complained they advised there may be next door using shower therefore you can't get enough water in shower. No apology or compensation provided for multiple days being no water available.
