    Pros +

    • The staff was amazing. The desk clerk had a fun quiz for my daughter and gave her origami earrings. Great “traditional Japanese” hotel experience.
    • The staff were super friendly and helpful. Comfortable stay. The hotel being a rehabilitation facility as well gives staying there extra value.
    • This was an incredibly wonderful Japanese inn. It was a little away from the main busy area of Matsushima, but still easily accessible by walking. The building was charming and beautiful and very well kept. My family loved the public bath and it was my daughter’s first public bath experience. Every day after on our trip she asked if we could do public bath again. Our room was very spacious and comfortable, with everything we needed. But the stand-out was the owners! The couple were incredibly kind and made us feel like more than guests. They felt like family immediately. The man gave a quiz when we checked in which was very fun, and even though my daughter wasn’t present for check-in, he still gave me a small treat to give to her. The woman was very attentive and kind and said goodbye and welcome back every time we left or returned. She even helped me find laundry facilities nearby. When we checked out, they insisted on driving us to the train station and not walking with all of our bags. Absolutely above and beyond service from all the staff. Not only would I stay here again, I will go out of my way to stay at Matsushima just to enjoy this inn.

    Cons -

    • A bit far from public transportation. Not an issue, but something to consider. Plus there are no meal options (free coffee and tea available), but the staff recommended good places to eat in the area.
    • Because of personal physical issues, the beds and pillows were not comfortable. That is not a con for this location as it was to be expected, so plan accordingly in you're in the same situation. They were a low mattress on the floor with buckwheat pillows. The blankets however, were amazing and fluffy.
    • The property is getting a little worn, but still lovely.

Ryokan located in a quiet area of Matsushima. Owners were so kind and fun.

    10AntoinettePosted on: 11-7-2025

The location was within walking distance to the train station, and 15-20 minutes walk from the nearest temple, tourist area and coastal islands. The staff were amazing, so kind and understanding. The lobby lounge had a shared fridge and microwave which made it easy to heat up prepared meals from the A-COOP grocery store a few blocks away. The staff also assisted with luggage forwarding and had even put our luggage in our room prior to our arrival. The traditional style décor, stone-lined hallways, tatami mats, cedar enclosed bathing room with soaking tub, and public bath was everything you can expect from a traditional Japanese inn.

Because of personal physical issues, the beds and pillows were not comfortable. That is not a con for this location as it was to be expected, so plan accordingly in you're in the same situation. They were a low mattress on the floor with buckwheat pillows. The blankets however, were amazing and fluffy.

Run by a warm, wonderful, older couple; fun shirt 1 question quiz with tasty prize; very traditional feeling; excellent value

    10PaulinPosted on: 10-21-2025

The owner couples are very sweet and welcoming. The place decoration is incredible and cute. The room is cozy. There are plenty of car parking space too.

Lovely staff who greeted us with a quiz game and sake. The room was spacious for four of us and the bath was a great bonus. Unfortunately we only had one night here and would love to return.

Very welcoming owners and staff, very comfy beds.

The property is getting a little worn, but still lovely.

It was a great stay. We were greeted by the owner of the hotel, a very kind woman and her husband. During our stay we were very well treated: without asking our luggage was brought upstairs, we got nice gifts (sake) and lots of recommendations. The room was clean and spacious with a nice view, the futon mattresses were very comfy. The location was also perfect for us, not too far from the city center but also in a quiet neighbourhood. Above all we also really enjoyed the public bath.

    10DarenPosted on: 7-16-2025

The hosts were amazingly friendly, and gave us a very thorough and energetic welcome at the front desk (prepare for a quiz!). This ryokan is well-located though we went there by car.

I love how the ryokan, it was a rare experience..the ryokan so clean and big for me and my husband..The staff hospitalility was superb..And they had a big onsen too..and its private only for the guest..love it.

The location was very close to the station, but the near restaurant about 1km and close early. And the kombini also 1 km. So you should buy some food or snacks in advance to prepare.Oh also the pillow, i didnt know if it was a japan tradisional pillow, but for me it wasnt soft enough, maybe you can consider to change the pillow to the soft one. Thank you.

    10RamitaPosted on: 6-17-2025

The room was clean. The futon was thick and I had good sleep. The owners were very friendly and they even gave us Japanese alcohol (their dogs were adorable as well). The onsen was clean and very relaxing.

    9RebeccaPosted on: 6-17-2025

The owners are a lovely couple - warm and friendly. Our tatami room was clean and spacious. The bath facilities were clean. This was the most comfortable futon of our trip.

The facility is aging but immaculate. I wish there was a place to fill out water bottles.

    9BenjaminPosted on: 5-4-2025

Very friendly staff and nice spacious rooms. Was interesting to experience a traditional Ryokan room. Was one of the most comfortable sleeps I had on my trip.

Location was a little out of the way, which I actually personally liked since I got to see more of the city, but that may not be the case for others.

Pleasant and attentive welcome. Spacious and comfortable room. Pleasant onsen/furo. Well located if you have a car.

    Nothing!

    9MikePosted on: 4-20-2025

Our hosts were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The room was great - so much nicer to have a traditional Japanese room than tiny modern hotel. The place was a little out of the busy center but that suited us to include some walking

    9JoannePosted on: 4-7-2025

The location, the nature of the building, the onsen and the spacious bedroom.

No dining options but easily overcome with some food picked up from the local shops.
