Pros +
- We were looking for a traditional Japanese experience and we certainly achieved this, it was close walking distance to the infamous snow monkey park and hosts a wonderful hot spring bathing facility . The evening meal was delicious and a wonderful end.
- The outdoor onsen was wonderful. It's not a private onsen but I went super early and I got the whole place to myself. Soaking in winter when you can see the steam/fog rises from the water in the early light of dawn was surreal. The food was delicious as well
- Staff is friendly and speaks enough English to facilitate interaction with guests. They are very welcoming and kind. Ryokan is very quiet and peaceful with onsen included. Dinner was very good!
Cons -
- Finding the hotel from the bus stop was difficult , getting back was no issue as the hotel owners were happy to drive us to the bus station.
- This is really just nitpicking. The room is lovely but on the older side. It also got a bit too warm under the blanket with the heater on. Great if you love the heat!
- Onsen is open to the public so may be very busy at times. Would be nice to have open 24/7 to ryokan guests, but only from 6 am to 10 pm.

The onsen was clean and refreshing. The rooms were cute and were spacious. Staff were lovely
Paper thin walls. Could hear normal conversation in the next room.
What a charming, amazing and beautiful place. It looks like a traditional house with tatamis and futons, very pretty. The dinner and breakfast also were very good, and the lady that runs the place is so sweet. Thank you so much for a warm welcome
This quaint gem was tucked away from the city's noise and provided an excellent getaway for me and my husband. Their private open-air onsen was downstairs, and they allowed tattoos, which were challenging to find in Japan. I would definitely recommend the breakfast provided in the morning by the family that runs the business, then hiking right up to Monkey Snow Park for a memorable memory. Thank you for closing our trip with this relaxing getaway!
Very low price and very hard working staff
Very crowded onsen when accepting outsiders, short time (8-10 p.m.) when available only to staying guests.
Onsen was spectacular (go late at night and you may have it to yourself!). The futon beds are very comfortable relative to other futons on tatami’s we have slept on. The kaiseki dinner is excellent and made with love. The owners genuinely care and you can tell they love hosting international people! The town of Yamanouchi is also very lovely with great food options if you decide to walk down. Just be sure to get to the ryokan during the day during spring/summer, as the last train to town from Nagano station leaves at 5pm!! It’s a 13,000 yen taxi ride to the hotel otherwise (learned from experience)
Loved everything, dinner, breakfast, onsen, rooms, owners.
Good value, traditional, with onsen and japanese styke meals
Nothing all good
Very clean and authentic. The rooms were very nice, the owners provides yukatas as well. The location is superb - a short walk to the Snow Monkey Park - you can also arrange a transport with the owners without extra charge. The outside onsen is beautiful.Even though some things are older I do not mind that as everything was very well taken care of and clean.
The proximity to Monkey Park. Dinner and breakfast enjoyed by parents, picky kids did not enjoy as much.
We had to store luggage after check out at another nearby hotel but it cost 500 yen per bag.
Minshuku Miyama is definitely one of the best places I've ever stayed. The staff were unbelievably nice and helpful, always ready to help with a smile. The food was absolutely amazing, especially the homemade dinner with local ingredients. And the location in the middle of beautiful nature was fantastic. Minshuku Miyama is a real hidden gem, perfect for anyone looking for peace and an authentic experience. I highly recommend it!
The owners are very kind and do their best to explain everything. The onsen is private in the mornings and evenings, and I had it all to myself every time—such a great way to relax! The location is very convenient, close to the Monkey Park and the express bus to Nagano Station. Also, the room was pleasantly warm, even in mid-March. Overall, it felt like staying at my grandmother’s home—so cozy and welcoming. I will definitely return!
This place was an excellent location to the snow monkey park! We enjoyed the walk which was short 10 minutes ot the entrance. It also conveniently had a bus stop right out front the hotel to take the bus into town. Our favorite part was the outdoor onsen. The lady that owned the place was so cute and kind! She cooked us a delicious breakfast.
The onsen is amazing. Great location for car.
In the dining room, the traditional sitting-on-the-floor setting (like you see in the photos on Booking) is changed to western high table setting, which I find less authentic. But the rest is nice
dinner and breakfast were lovely. the rice was such a highlight, the rice they cooked were delicious.
I thought there were individual bathrooms for the rooms I booked, but alas, all bathroom were shared. Though it didn't terribly affect me, but it was slightly a surprise.
Location is great if you are there to go to the snow monkey park, as it is only a 15-20 minute walk to the entrance. The room was nice and big, with the futons being very comfortable. We went in winter, and it was very cold, but the room with the heater was bearable. The onsen is beautiful, mostly empty if you go very early or very late, otherwise it is also open to the public and it can get a bit crowded. The couple that runs the hotel is very nice, and they gave us a ride to the station on the day we were leaving. It is a walkable distance from shibu onsen itself (10 mins), so even with snow you can go and sightsee in Shibu.
Beware there is no food places around, so I would recommend booking the food (specially dinner) from the hotel. If you want to go onsen hopping in Shibu it is possible, but a bit troublesome. It was not the main objective of our trip, so we didn't mind. Buses from Yudanaka station or Nagano station to the location of the hotel do not run past 5ish (and for some reason taxi apps do not work in that area) so I would suggest planning transport in a way you arrive before that to the hotel itself.
The woman who runs the Ryokan is so welcoming and accommodating. She does not speak English but has pictures and writing to help communicate. She let us leave our bags with her while we went to the monkey park. The room was very comfortable and we enjoyed the traditional stay. The food was amazing, as was the open air onsen. We loved that it was such a short walk to the monkey park entrance from here, and also close enough to walk to Shibu Onsen and enjoy the town.
Excellent hosts, wonderful meals and very relaxing onsen experience.
