- The bath was a perfect way to start the day. With so many cool things to do and see, it made for a relaxing and wonderful stay throughout.
- The owner is super friendly and the dinners and breakfasts were very beautifully prepared and really tasty.
- This is a family-run traditional old Japanese ryokan (guest house). The room was clean, the tatami beds were very comfartable to sleep on. The onsen was clean but the baths need some renovation. The location is very convenient to visit snow monkey park, which is accessable by both bus or walk. The helpful owner speaks good English. The traditional Japanese breakfast was very tasty.
Cons -
- The house is pretty old but everything functioned.
- The common spaces are a bit clattered. The wooden planks in onsen baths were slippery and a bit moldy.
- absolutely nothing: this place is a gem!

A historic and traditional building, an indoor onsen accessible 24 hours a day, and a lovely, kind and interesting host: definitely book here if you are visiting this area of Japan!
absolutely nothing: this place is a gem!
We had such a fantastic stay at the ryokan. The room was pleasant, calm, and traditional, in a setting that felt like it could have been a film set. Our host was incredibly friendly and made us feel welcome, with plenty of stories and tips. We look forward to going back already.
In terms of facilities, the onsen was a little dated feeling and could have certainly been cleaner, but if anything, this added to the charm of the place.
The owner is a super lovely old Japanese man he speaks very good English he loves to tell you about his hotel and his archery. The onsen is very lovely we were here end of April and there was nobody else staying there we had the onsen to ourselves had we have known it was such a lovely place we would have stayed more than one night. Awesome place to stay if you're going to see the snow monkeys. Cannot give this more than a 10 but I would.
There is nothing about this place that I did not like.
Overall the price of the ryokan is quite good, it's worth it to experience one in a cheap way. We had a Japanese breakfast included as well which was very nice and quite tasty. The staff was helpful, and we were given a ride to the snow monkey park by the owner, and he informed us about the local areas nearby and where we can go. There is a private hot spring in the building and you can go anytime you want. Often it's empty, meaning it's a hot spring all to yourself. It was nice to bathe in the hot spring various times in the day and we quite enjoyed that aspect. The town itself is pretty, with various nice spots such as the Thai place nearby , which was cozy and a nice place to go when you want something other then Japanese food. The staff is a sister and brother, the sister was kind and helpful to us and the brother often told us about the various spots.
The building is old which could be seen as good to experience a traditional house but it was not in a well shape. The front of the house is quite messy, with papers and other things all over. One big issue was how we were unable to go to other hot springs in the town. We were told we could visit shibu onsen as well as others. We were told however there is no public baths and this one does not count as a part of the shibu onsen, which isn't clear online but you are unable to go to unless you stay in one of the inns there. The hot spring in the inn itself was quite dirty with debris in the bath. Moreover, there were roaches and other bugs in the bath area. We also had issues with the passive aggressiveness of the owner at points. We had asked for a can opener at some point and he said not to expect getting one; when we said okay we won't need one then he then said no you can take it but not expect to always be able to use one... It says laundry is on the site but you need your own detergent, moreover there is no dryer and the coin landary is quite far. It was incredibly disappointing overall, and we felt a tension there making us want to go early, since we couldn't really go to the onsens we wanted to either.
The owner was amazing, we had a great chat about the local monkeys and he gave us a ride to the snow monkey park entrance. He made an amazing traditional Japanese breakfast too. We loved our complimentary red bean treats and Yukata. The internals of the Ryokan was an awesome display of culture with lots to look at. The indoor hot spring was nice but small.
Lovely welcome and superb Japanese banquet style dinner.
A little old and tired and could do with somewhere comfortable to sit, but a fantastic Japanese experience!
Authentic traditional Japanese household experience. Exactly what we were looking for during our trip. Recommended to take the option with the food included as it will make your experience really full. Also it was great to have a private onsen
Staying here felt like staying with your Grandparents, the nice comforting room to stay in and in the morning and at night he would come grab you and feed you a wonderful filling mealThe host was incredibly polite and would greet us and ask us about our day. I would definitely recommend staying here and getting the breakfast/dinner
It was perfect
Hosts were incredibly helpful and kind. They even helped us forward our luggage to our next destination. I loved having an onsen on site, was such a great way to end a busy day in the cold. The Ryokan is old, yet charming. It's very traditional - you sleep on futons, which are adequate, the hosts bring you hot water every morning for tea. It's simple and no fuss, but everything you need and perfect for the price you pay.
Nothing, everything met expectations
Very good dinner, tasty and well presentedDeluxe Twin room was spacious and futon were comfortable.Old building with traditional Shoji, Fusuma and Tatami. To my regret too less effort and quality in repair worksRoom was cold but got warm fast with gas heater. Overnight futon are very warm ans pleasant
Overall property is messy and not clean, in particular at the entrance and nearby the dinner room. If you are used to much dirt and dust, then this is no problem for you. Inside Bath (Onsen) were not hot and the shower faucet were not delivering low pressure water of 40c or less. Some wooden barriers on top floor loosen or missing, making this facility potentially dangerous for kids or people with disabilities.Price vs Service below the average level at YudanakaIf you wish an extra Futon for a small kid ~7.000 ¥ will be charged (75% of room charge is there normality)One more detail, gas heater in dinner room is very noisy, feeling like a compressor in a repair workshop.
Very traditional, everything was super clean and staff is really nice.
Futon was a little bit uncomfortable, but it’s common knowledge.
A lovely friendly place to stay. Very helpful owner/manager.
I use a powered mobility device (Omeo which is based on a Segway) and the electricity was not of adequate wattage to charge it despite leaving it on to charge for 24 hours. The control panel indicated that the battery was able to charge but it wouldn't. This left me trapped at the accommodation after the first day. Once we got to Kyoto we were able to charge the Omeo again. Just a warning for anyone else travelling with a mobility device.
Super sweet host! He offered to help with my laundry, left a whole jug of hot water outside the room every morning, and got a smaller sized yukata for me. They also gave me a traditional handkerchief for a souvenir. Futon beds were super comfortable - great for my back and onsen water was great:)
Downside of a traditional ryokan is paper thin walls and some areas (outside the room) were not cleanest. Honestly all the important things (room, bedding, towels, yukata) were clean so it’s fine!
The owner was incredibly kind. Despite my late check-in, he patiently waited for me, which I truly appreciated.I absolutely adored my room. Though the ryokan is old, it has a warm, homey atmosphere. A welcoming snack was thoughtfully provided, along with tea and coffee. My futon was already laid out, and a yukata and towels were prepared for me.The bath is available 24 hours, and since no one else was using it, I had the luxury of enjoying my own private onsen. The decor transported me back to the ’90s-’00s—it had a nostalgic charm that reminded me of home in a way I can’t quite explain.Breakfast was a traditional Japanese meal, and I enjoyed every bite. I even finished all the rice in the mini rice cooker! One of the most memorable gestures was when the owner kindly drove me to the monkey park. It was snowing heavily, and the shuttle bus had already left, but he went out of his way to help me.Overall, I loved my stay here and would definitely return.
Almost everything. Very professional and kind owner, and was extremely helpful. The food was good, the traditional amenities and style were great. The onsen was wonderful. It felt like I stepped back in time 30 years in the best possible way. I highly recommend a stay here.
Well maintained, the owner is nice, show tips around town. Cute little ryokan.
The public washing stations could be more clean.
The host that owned the hostel was accommodating in my experience. The hostel itself can be a love it or hate it. I personally loved staying there. I do understand the other comments that says "needs cleaning" or "needs to be maintained better", etc. But, I was able to enjoy myself in a traditional Ryokan. I enjoyed wearing a Yukata and the Tanzen provided. The host was kind enough to also leave a complimentary cake. I also enjoyed the old onsen where the water it uses comes from the hot spring itself. He also offered a ride to the Snow Monkey entrance and also told stories about the area's history. I think you'd love this old Ryokan and being able to stay and find yourself back in time, this is a place I would recommend. Oh! Also, you would have to pay ¥350 for tax (either city or lodging tax. I forgot where it goes)
