Pros +
- The penthouse was very spacious, fully equipped kitchen, would fit 8-10 persons easily, washing machine & dryer, en-suite toilet in each room, lovely living area, amazing views from the windows, staff were amazing, Yamato luggage shipping option, two onsen that can be used privately.
- Nice hotel with welcoming Australian staff. The Onsen was closed when we got there which was disappointing because it was one of the reasons we chose this location. The staff was kind and let us use their sister hotels facilities so it ended up being fine. The room was nice and had everything we needed.
- Spacious and comfortable clean apartment room; good amenities. It's nice to have Nespresso in the room too. Would stay again.
Cons -
- Breakfast please.
- The cafe has odd hours in the off season- there was a bit of confusion about do you want to book breakfast etc and I assumed that's because it's so busy, but maybe that's because it is not really open. We didn't really want western breakfast anyway, just telling others.
- It leans towards the pricier side for the winter season.

Such a gorgeous place. We had great views of the mountains too from the windows. The kitchen is well equipped. Staff is the best - so helpful and prompt in their responses. We were there for 4 days (2 adults, 2 kids) and we also enjoyed in the family private onsen
Modern renovation of a traditional ryokan - Japanese chic with lots of added facilities that would make a longer stay enjoyable (mini kitchen, comfy bed on tatami, communal lounge/cinema room). Staff were friendly and take an interest in the guests. We were truly impressed.
It leans towards the pricier side for the winter season.
Very friendly and efficient service. The appartement was newly renovated and well furnished. Location is great to walk in the city and head to various restaurants. It is a 15mn walk to the main gondola though. The hotel provides a shuttle in the morning but none to return. We enjoyed the coffee shop on lobby level. It is a gaijin friendly venue
Black out curtains in the room are needed. The venue has cosy family private sento which we enjoyed yet no onsen.
The staff were welcoming and very helpful. The apartment was superb!
If they could better maintain the common washing machines/dryers, that'll make the stay perfect.
The room is incredibly cozy, modern and clean, elevated with an amazing view. Plenty of space with excellent amenities. Very nice cafe just downstairs as well as very helpful and friendly staff. Location is awesome too, walking distance to literally everywhere
The place is amazing—nothing I can complain about. However it does leans towards the pricier side
Kawamotoya is a beautiful hotel nestled in the heart of Nozawa Onsen. Due to an injury I sustained, I needed to move my trip out by 2 months - the staff happily assisted with this. On that note, that staff were excellent - always happy to help out and provide tips and pointers regarding things to do. Breakfast at Harding's cafe was good - the chef's happily swapped out bacon from the dishes and replaced it with salmon to assist with dietary requirements. Note that Kawamotoya has 2 private onsen's which are open 24 hours. This is what truly makes the stay special. I know that Japanese cultures values public bathing, but as a muslim where modesty is key, a private onsen allows one to still enjoy the experience without having to worry about any values being comprimised. Additional items we enjoyed:- The rooms were spacious and well equipped- The washing machines and dryers were free to use during the green season
Will only list 2 points which can potentially be improved upon:1. Room service is scheduled every three days which can be a bit tricky if you're coming from a hotel with daily room service2. Breakfast options are slightly limited - a la carte items are mainly savoury in nature, and guests are limited to one drink valued at 550 yen which can be a bit stifling (a hot chocolate is 600 yen)
Brilliant modern renovation of a traditional ryokan - modern Japanese chic with lots of added facilities that would make a longer stay enjoyable (mini kitchen in the bedroom, communal lounge/cinema room with surround system off the lobby). Breakfast was great value and very, very tasty. Proper barista coffee too. Staff friendly and take an interest in the guests. We were truly impressed.
We could only find one restaurant open in town - if dinner had been available in the hotel, we'd have jumped at the chance.
A 5 star rating is not enough for this hotel and the people there! I would give them 10 if I could!! ?An absolute jewel in Nozawaonsen with the mist wonderful staff and accommodation you could find! Take a bow, Kawamotoya! ??
Our only complaint- we didn’t stay long enough! ?
Brilliant. Beautiful rooms, affordable during the green season and right across from an onsen. The staff is kind and helpful. Just great.
Great location, clean and modern.Very close to near hot springs
The private onsen, the flexibility, the kindness of the staff
The staff, the room and the breakfast.
Location could have been more central.
- The room is spacious - breakfasts and coffee are delicious - There have private sauna in the hotel, good enough for families and groups
- if cleaning service can be made by request on guests would be better than once in 3 days stay
Well located inn. Comfortable beds and linens. Breakfast was well executed and well portioned.
The property, though well appointed, did not convey a japanese onsen resort experience. Rather, it conveyed a mix of east meets mostly west resort experience. Housekeeping level and service was an issue - cleanliness and lack of attention to detail does not measure up to the price point of competing Japanese owner operators of other establishments in the area. Room ergonomics not well conceived and a lack of sufficient garment hanging hooks and hanging space for clothing was an issue. Some amenties such as the gym and laundry seemed to be shared with off duty working staff.
Everything was amazing, food, location, beds.
the design. The front desk is really helpful and with patience. Shuttle service is also a plus.
suspect sign of racial discrimination at the cafe in lobby.Since the cafe was short-staffed during breakfast and no water was served on my table, my simple attempt to get some water unexpectedly turned into a lesson in English etiquette:A cafe staff with bushy beard, in his infinite wisdom, deemed it necessary to "correct" my barbaric attempt at communication, enlightening me on the "proper" way to articulate my thirst. The truth is,without bothering busy staff there, all I tried was to get water by myself. Since the bushy beard stood in the way to kitchen, I explained “I need to get some water”which sounds like a huge offense to him. He frown upon “ Would! You! Please! Give! Me some water! Use Please! Not I need to get some water blah blah…..” At first I thought he was nothing but a racist guest. When I recognized he was one of the staff here, such attitude would be more than rudeness as one in service business.True hospitality is about respecting and understanding the unique backgrounds of each guest, not about schooling them to conform to an arbitrary standard of communication. I earnestly hope Kawamotoya takes this feedback to heart, embracing a more welcoming approach towards guests from diversed culture
Great hospitality, great onsen nearby, and a good private onsen inhouse. Great breakfast, too. We did come back for the second year.
