About

Jan Harmsgat Country House is set in a historic 17th-century farmhouse surrounded by the Langeberg Mountains and the Breede River. It is decorated throughout with classical Victorian furnishings and features a restaurant, bar and outdoor swimming pool. All elegantly presented accommodations includes heating, air conditioning and a luxurious private bathroom, some with freestanding bathtub. Each room or suite has its own distinctive style and history. The country, fine dining restaurant makes use of its location among sloping vineyards and orchards producing a range of fruits and nuts. Fresh homemade cuisine is served throughout the day and can be combined with a local wine from the cellar. The Robertson Wine Region begins within 12 mi from the guest house. Both Bonnievale and Swellendam are a 20-minute drive away.

    Pros +

    • We loved the historical setting and the FAB pool. The staff are friendly and go the extra mile for the guests.
    • The property is gorgeous and well maintained, but more than that the staff are the real stars! Thanks to Mazanne & Jaco for their support and creativity in planning our engagement.
    • We loved the garden with its orchards, our lovely room, the great food and also especially Jaco and the brilliant caring staff made our stay and a birthday weekend extra special. I will be back and really recommend this special space

    Cons -

    • The property has incredible potential. We are very happy to hear that the team is busy with some new ideas and a veg garden etc.
    • Room was large and comfortable but decor and some fittings well past their best. There is road noise, which did not bother us but some may find an issue
    • We arrived after dark and the entrance off the R60 had no light, so invisible at night. Travelling from Swellendam side Google maps indicates a left turnoff with some sort of imaginary underpass that does not exist. We would not have found the entrance if we had not been here many years ago and remembered roughly where to turn. A reflective signboard is essential from both directions.

Beautiful setting, friendly staff and spectacular bedroom. This historical gem has lost none of it's character whilst offering contemporary convenience one would expect from a top destination.

Wonderful spot with lovely old buildings with moderns twists. Great base to explore area.

Dinner was not up to scratch - Raviolo was too al dente and the pork belly was tough - only disappoints of the whole stay.

The farm, the surroundings, the layout of the cottages, the restaurant and especially also the restaurant service!

The welcome by the receptionist was a bit minimalist and we felt like we were a bit of a nuisance rather than welcome guests. They were definitely friendly, but for a 5-star hotel we expected a bit more of a welcoming service.

The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful. The beds were very comfortable. I slept like a baby.

No Dstv and the wifi was a bit slow. Needed it for work purposes so if this is a requirement, this is probably not the best choice. No long mirror or shower. Not a train smash. Just something I should have made sure about beforehand. I'll still go back in the future and just choose a different room. When I booked, there were only two rooms left so the choices were limited. Not the venue's fault.

A wonderful quaint property, with thoughtful touches. Very character filled, and intertwined with farm and nature. The staff and restaurant are excellent.

Unfortunately the noise from the nearby road can be quite loud in some areas, as was the case for room 5.

The staff at the hotel were 10/10, they couldn’t be nicer nor more helpful if they tried. The food isn’t five star gourmet meals, but it’s very tasty. The wine was great, and we did a tasting on the day we arrived which we enjoyed immensely.

The hotel is advertised as being 5 star, this in our option is incorrect. Our bedroom had mould on the ceiling, throughout the shower and in the bathroom. The mould didn’t appear overnight and had clearly been ignored for some time. The shower didn’t drain. The throws on the bed were old, worn and stained, the duvet cover had bleach marks on it. There was little to no introduction to the area, the grounds nor the hotels amenities and services on arrival by the receptionist.

A very nice stay. Huge room, delicious food and beautiful surroundings. Great location between Robertson and Swellendam. I was there for the second time. One person on staff deserves special mention. On both visits she was wonderful to the guests and from my point of view she is the soul of the hotel: Leandra. You can only feel comfortable with her.

    Farm atmosphere

We are short people and reaching the basins was difficult

    8SimonPosted on: 12-25-2024

Setting and the area was charming.

The rooms and exterior are needing a little maintenance, need a paint. Shower outlet was blocked. The ashtray outside out room hadn’t been emptied and it smelled.

Beautiful farm, friendly waitresses and good country food in beautiful restaurant with reasonable prices. Lovely verandah outside room with water feature which helped drown out traffic noise. Pinotage is excellent. Pool area is nice to relax under but staff don't always put the cushions out.

Mould in bathroom, TV remote didn't work upon arrival and TV screen distorted, 1 single chair in the room, kettle didn't boil water so coffee/tea cool when drunk, and kettle cord too short to reach cups. Housekeeping is very poor. We only received 1 bath towel, so we had to ask for another. We had to ask for rooms to be serviced on the 1 day, no replacement of refreshments/condiments throughout stay. Noise from traffic is a problem. We went cycling on the farm with our MTBs and twice attacked by workers farm dog. Just expensive stay for experience compared to other establishments in the vicinity.

Breakfast was average-probably due to power outage it was cold.

    Breakfast

    7GordonPosted on: 12-17-2024

The breakfast was excellent. The history of the farm is interesting. The manager and staff are exceptional an authentic welcome.

The entire property is feeling a little unloved and rough around the edges. Slightly unkempt and heading off the boil. The road noise from the R60 is ever present and i don't think they are maximising their pomegranate brand enough.

    Nice restaurant with lovely service

    Old outdated rooms

    8RenéPosted on: 11-26-2024

Romantic, laid-back atmosphere, perfect for any couple looking for a weekend getaway to reconnect to each other and nature. Super friendly management and staff. Great food and wine.

    10KatiePosted on: 11-23-2024

We had a great stay at the house, would highly recommend! The rooms were great, with a very relaxing pool and amazing restaurant. There isn't loads to do in the surrounding towns, but a lovely stop between the garden route and worth the detour.

    9AnnronaldPosted on: 11-23-2024

The indoor and out door eating areas were great. And being modernised during our visit. All new furniture being installed. The manager was very helpful and staff amazing

Unfortunately the property was very close to the main road, so a bit noisy. But this didn't detract from the ambience of the place.
