Pros +
- The people. The atmosphere.
- Nice staff, fulfils all the needs you have of a backpackers.
- Location
Cons -
- I had cockroaches in my room every night (although speaking with others, I seem to have been the only room with that issue). Food service slow.
- It's a very clubby scene- there was very loud pumping music every night that I was there. For one of these nights it was in their rave cave so the sound was relatively contained, for the others it was in their bar and very loud. This is fine if you're a traveller looking to drink and party, but less great if you're looking to make friends another way/are interested in activities not centered around drinking/want to get a good night sleep. Rooms are quite run down, but for the price and given it's a backpackers, that's not unreasonable.
- Poor internet, cleaning and facilities

Dirty pool, the mosquito nets don’t close, most fans don’t work
Tulia House Backpackers is very well located, just a short walk from the beach and the mall, which makes it super convenient. The room was clean, with running hot water, several plugs (including next to the bed), and a practical desk for working on a laptop. The swimming pool is good for cooling off after a warm day, and the staff are supportive, and ready to help.
Despite these positives, the place looks like it had its golden days a while ago. The atmosphere and facilities feel a bit outdated and would really benefit from a refresh to bring back the charm that must have once defined it!Laundry prices are quite high compared to local rates, and breakfast - while tasty with three nice options - surprisingly doesn’t include tea or coffee, which is something I’ve never seen anywhere else in the world! (That said, the cappuccinos are delicious.)The nearby Nyali Beach is famous, but the stretch closest to the guesthouse isn’t the most inviting for swimming. Overall, Tulia House has potential... a little update and clearer hospitality touch would make a big difference.
I liked the activities that the hotel could proposed
The rooms globally are empty and the bathroom is beyond minimalist and not very safe for hot water. Unfortunately we went there for the weekend where there is party all night so for a hotel, you can't really sleep as the music and noise are loud
Good location and relatively fair priceStaff were very nice
Pool is not useable, showers don’t work and don’t have hot water, bathroom was often out of toilet paper, rooms are dingy, barely any bedding provided (2 thin sheets), AC smelled mildewy, breakfast doesn’t include coffee (clear scheme to up charge)Very much a get what you pay for experience
- cannot find anything as prices are higher than in other places and conditions so much worse
- this place is a restaurant/ pub/club first and a hostel second. All the windows from the rooms and dormitories face the pub/club outside where the music is played very loudly starting maybe 9AM in the morning and played full volume until early hours in the morning so you cannot sleep at all. I tried to sleep one night in a private room and one night in a dormitory thinking it would be better but it was only worse. The windows both- in the room and in a dormitory were literally shaking all night because of the volume of the music. Screaming drank people everywhere. The majority from outside of the hostel as anyone can come to that club/ pub/restaurant. The reception closes by 10PM, random people from the street get inside the hostel and there is nobody to complain to. Some drank/drugged guy slept on a couch outside of my room, some Kenyan lady who clearly wasn’t a guest as didn’t have any luggage came to the dormitory at 1AM to sleep on one of the beds. Everyone knows the code to the door so anyone can come over and sleep anywhere they want. Zero security or privacy. This place is a total joke and I’m shoked it’s called a hostel, not a club with rooms upstairs. If you want to party all night with a music full volume it’s a place for you. If you are looking for a place to sleep, you won’t get any sleep here and you need to find another accomodation. Neither it’s possible to read a book or do anything else as I have mentioned all the rooms and little patios face that restaurant/pub/club and the music plays there almost 24/7 so even during the day you will not get an hour of silence to read a book or focus on something.
The location is ideal. The facilities include a pool table, a swimming pool, swings, and a nice bar with good music.
The stay was disappointing. There was no reception at arrival (9:00 pm), and the security guard gave misleading information about the booking and hinted for money then and when asked for an adapter too. Staff overall seemed more interested in money than hospitality. The room had an open window with over 20 mosquitoes, and even the bed net was left open. After struggling with mosquitoes, we had to buy spray from a nearby Carrefour. The room itself was wooden and smelled unpleasant due to humidity, worsened by the insect spray. While the place has potential, better staff training, mosquito control, and humidity management are needed to improve guest experience.
Good location, staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a spa on the rooftop. Also there is a bar area, pool not looked after that well.
No hot water
Clean bedsheets. A fan for every bed, to reduce the heat. Locker space. Beautiful balcony and common areas. Great restaurant. Great location.
The bathroom sinks and shower are clogged and water takes a while to drain. The toiled seat should be replaced with something white and spotless.
This is not a hotel, but a hostel for people who want to hang in the bar and sing to music till 2.30AM.Our room was located next to the bar, which meant that we could hear all the music and shouting very loud. Please be aware of this before you book.Swimming pool was not available during our stay, although the staff secured it would be OK on our second day..Overall our most disappointing hotel on our Kenya trip and the staff didn't seem to care much for it.
Reception staff were nice, walkable location. It was fine but not somewhere I'd send a friend.
Can get noisy, but it's a hostel, so comes with the territory. Rooms weren't particularly clean. Basic sweep and wipe but clumps of brushed out hair from previous guest still left in bathroom soap dish. Fridge was unclean and room very much in need of a general refresh. Aircon smelt of damp. No vegan option breakfast, they did remove items at request but didn't sub in other items, so was left with half a serving despite asking.
Really good food, a relaxing swimming pool and proximity to the beach.
Of all the properties I have visited Tulia met my expectations cleanliness and comfort
Maybe their breakfast needs some more attention and improvement
Cute setting, security, pool, bar, great place to relax Harriette, the reception manager is amazing. Calm, caring and professional. Great food wings and breakfast!! Walking distance to mall, got hair washed there, beer, coconut at fruit place indoors.
Perfect all!?
I love the fact that they have a lovely cat! It gives a special vibe to the place! A place cat friendly! Love it! The staff are amazing! They are always doing their best to make you comfortable. Very clean!
The room I stayed is a little bit old! But it didn’t massed up my stay there. Old but good and clean
Friendly staff esp Ms Triza who helped me to make my stay pleasure. Walking distance to mall & also to the beach!
The bar was nice The room was spacious and had a balcony which was pretty chill
I didn’t understand why wasn’t it a fridge for the travelers or even a kitchen to store some food it’s a hostel it should have the basic tools for the travelers. No hot water + the water was salty asf. The mosquitos there are the worst I swear!
The pool was clean and the breakfast was nice
The beds need an upgrade and they can do better in terms of the rooms ambience
