- The manager Sushant was a hero. When I faced issues with a safari where the taxi driver never showed up, Sushant helped me locate the safari company, give me advice and sort out the safari booking. He gave me a cool motorcycle ride through Zanzibar to get there.

I had the most incredible stay at Al Johari Zanzibar! I was celebrating my birthday, and the hotel made it extra special by giving me a complimentary room upgrade—such a thoughtful gesture! From the moment I arrived, the staff was incredibly warm, welcoming, and attentive, making sure I felt at home. The hotel itself is a perfect blend of traditional Zanzibari charm and modern comfort. My upgraded room was spacious, clean, and beautifully decorated, offering a peaceful retreat after a day of exploring Stone Town. The location is excellent—right in the heart of the city, within walking distance of key attractions, shops, and restaurants.Breakfast was a delightful experience, with a variety of fresh fruit, local delicacies, and international options, all served in a beautiful rooftop setting. One of the highlights of my stay was dining at the rooftop restaurant, where I enjoyed breathtaking ocean views while indulging in delicious food. The service throughout my stay was top-notch, with the staff always ready to assist with anything I needed. Thank you, Al Johari, for making my birthday so memorable! I will definitely be back. Highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Zanzibar!
Nothing that I can think of
Location was great, breakfast was pretty good and in a nice rooftop area; staff were very helpfu
Beds were not very comfortable; there was construction going on right outside my window
Charming boutique hotel in the heart of Stonetown. The ideal tranquil location in a fascinating historical building close to bars and restaurants and conveniently situated near the port terminal. Exemplary service from the friendly staff team who assisted with onward transfer. Would cetainly retutn and recommend to others who enjoy simething different from multinational or corporate chains.
Everything was perfect but beer could have been colder, but this didn't spoil our stay at all!
Really wonderful place to stay in Stone Town. The room was clean, spacious and quite affordable for being in such a central location. It is very near all the major tourist sites. The owner and the staff were excellent. So helpful and ready at all times to assist. There is also a seating area on the top floor which was an added bonus.
The price is very expensive, I definitely do not recommend it, you can find another hotel near by for half the price.
They also charge ridiculous prices and when you pay online through booking, they ask for extra tax and also want a commission for your credit card.
The hotel is situated in a house in traditional style for Stone Town with lots of dark wood in doors and panels, reminding about old times. Hotel Al Johari & spa surprised me in everything. The rooms and the entire hotel are extremely clean and The hotel team is cheerful and always ready to help. When I entered the hotel, I never felt like I was just coming to a hotel. I felt that I had arrived at home, where I was welcomed with joy. The breakfast offered at the hotel is a la carte, prepared according to your wishes. I really like the idea of the new manager of the hotel restaurant to offer, in addition to breakfast, small snacks at other times, as well as lunch and dinner The room has everything necessary to satisfy even the most demanding wishes. If racks or shelves are often missing in the utility rooms, Al Johari Hotel has also thought of these little things. The shower room is spacious, the water pressure is very good, hot water is available around the clock. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi and spa as well.
Interesting old building Great location Lovely staff
Breakfast was really poor Construction work going on opposite Noise at night until 1am from local bar
It's located just in the center of town and access to everything is good
The rooms are so small and poor fresh air circulation
Historic building, great location and very friendly staff. Would stay there again!
Can't think of anything!
I was really looked after. The staff were friendly and helpful. Very central location. Great breakfast. Overall the accommodation is good value and I highly recommend it to anyone who is planning a stay at Stonetown.
I did have to be careful with the stairs as the staircase is quite high and steep. It may not be suitable for elderly.
Location: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Al Johari Hotel boasts a perfect location, just a leisurely stroll away from the pristine beaches, bustling street food markets, a plethora of restaurants offering tantalizing cuisines, and captivating historical sites. Additionally, guests can easily access boats for island hopping adventures and indulge in delicious treats at nearby ice cream spots.Staff Hospitality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐The staff at Al Johari Hotel go above and beyond to ensure a memorable stay. The Manager Sushanta's collaborative approach, coupled with insightful suggestions on local attractions and assistance with boat rentals, truly enhanced our experience. Moreover, his flexibility, allowing us to extend our stay beyond the checkout time, exemplifies their dedication to guest satisfaction. Special mention to Hisham at the front desk, whose exceptional assistance in arranging affordable transportation for our excursion to the north was greatly appreciated. From the prime location to the outstanding hospitality, Al Johari Hotel exceeds expectations, making it the perfect choice for travelers seeking a memorable stay in Zanzibar.
The breakfast was excellent and staff is very friendly. The place is clean and well kept, quiet habitable.
The place is over sold on Booking.com. the location is completely different from how it is perceived on Booking.com.
Mr Behera, the owner of this hotel, treated me like family during my stay here. So much so that I extended my stay from 1 week, to 3 weeks. From offering me his motorbike, to preparing special lunches for us both, you couldn't ask for a more hospitable person. The views from the hotel's top floor are amazing, and the location is absolutely ideal. I'll definitely be back in Stone Town in the future, and I'll definitely be staying here again.
Disappointing
Disappointed Experience at Al Johari Hotel, ZanzibarRating: ⭐️⭐️My recent stay at the Al Johari Hotel in Zanzibar left me with a sense of disappointment, overshadowing what could have been an enjoyable experience. The hotel itself is not bad; it boasts a good location and a charming ambiance that captures the essence of Stone Town. However, my overall impression was marred by a significant issue that occurred during my stay.Regrettably, I left some of my clothes in the cupboard of my room. It was only after a few hours of my departure that I realized my mistake. When I contacted the manager to inquire about the possibility of retrieving my belongings, I was met with a disheartening response. The manager informed me that my clothes were not found in the room and offered a brief apology.Losing personal belongings is always a distressing experience, and the lack of a more proactive and empathetic response from the hotel staff only added to my disappointment. The incident left me feeling unsupported and frustrated, as the response seemed indifferent to the inconvenience caused. While Al Johari Hotel has its merits, such as its central location and pleasant atmosphere, the unfortunate incident with the lost clothes overshadowed the positive aspects of my stay. Hotels must prioritize the security and safekeeping of guests' belongings, and my experience in this regard was far from satisfactory. In conclusion, while Al Johari Hotel may appeal to those seeking a convenient location in Stone Town, my personal experience with the loss of belongings and the hotel's response has left a lasting negative impression on my overall perception of the establishment.
Location and the hotel staff
The door of the room was not closing properly
Great stay in a great location, in the centre of Stonetown. Rooftop with a great view over the sea and for sunset. Very kind staff. Wifi is working great.
As it is central, it gets quite loud in the evening / at night.
Lovely and local, with great staff, location and rooftop breakfast scene
Wasn’t used to air conditioning and no fan, so I caught a cold
