Pros +
- Every member of the staff was amazing, and we liked the breakfast as well as the in-room dining.
- I love that the property was sitting on a golf course, which also had a walking path forecast
- The staff was very friendly and helpful and greeted me every time I came in their presence
Cons -
- The luxury penthouse was more spacious than functional and there were signs of former parties that took some toll on the suite and its furnishings. Overall it was okay, and the good things helped us to overlook these shortcomings.
- Wanting to walk around near the property safety was a concern
- The breakfast/room service menu could have been better. Not very many selections to choose from

The staff was amazing and they had Very comfortable rooms.Facilities are well maintained.
The bar interferes with the restaurant, it’s very uncomfortable not having these things separate. Although the restaurant itself is very good
Breakfast was great! Hotel location is closer to The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Rosebank Mall where you can catch the Hop on and Off Bus. The hotel can arrange a fantastic tour of Soweto, the Apartheid Museum and other areas of Johannesburg.
The front desk staff are not experienced. The front desk area is underwhelming. You have to go outside or through the parking lot to access the spa. That was weird. I did not like the open bathroom as it is cold when the air conditioner is on because the shower does not have a door.
Good location and infrastructure
really poor wifi this is a major problem the refrigerator did not work which caused some of our fruits to go offbreakfast was average for a five star venue
The security and the front desk was always helpful.
Food was delayed.
The entire staff were friendly, helpful, and welcoming.
My call for laundry service was ignored.
Good choice! We arrived late in the day (19:30) to discover a well appointed room, which was very clean, and quite comfortable. The food in the restaurant was fine - we were served by an attentive staff and found the prices reasonable. I would stay here again!
We didn't stay long enough to make use of all the amenities.
Nice atmosphere, great indoor pool and good service and food
Staff was very helpful, my daughter had a small medical emergency and they ensured we had a doctor on call and for that we were very thankful
It was cold and could improve the heating facilities a bit better
Easy to get to from OR tambo. Staff were so kind and check in was easy. The room itself was very spacious with a kitchen and bathroom with bathtub and shower. Comfy beds - just loved it all around.
Delicious Food, clean facility, value for money, hardworking, friendly and approachable staff members,
The staff, the ambience and the great value for money offered to me.
I didn’t stay long enough to find out what I didn’t like.
The facilities and staff were excellent.
Things fill up quickly, so guests need to book spa appointments well ahead of time. The hotel staff weren’t able to book golf-related activities from the hotel for me. Guests instead need to walk to the golf course and sort out a booking individually and when I attempted to do so, I was told that the golf course was restricted for the entire day I requested to their club members only. Being able to easily book and use the advertised facilities from the hotel as a guest would undoubtedly elevate the experience. One additional way to improve the experience would be to make it easier to get the dim night lights off. I ended up just pulling my key out for the night, which then means I can’t control the temperature throughout the night.
location, green space
No proper couch for two in the room
We had a wonderful stay at The Houghton Hotel during our trip to South Africa. The hotel is incredibly modern and stylish, with very spacious rooms. The bed was exceptionally comfortable—exactly what we needed after a long flight. One of the highlights was the breakfast, very tasty and lots of options. The staff were warm and welcoming throughout our stay, and we were especially grateful that they accommodated a very early check-in so we could rest right away.Although we didn’t get a chance to use the hotel’s amenities, we did take a look around and everything—from the pool area to the wellness facilities—looked top-notch and beautifully maintained.Highly recommended for anyone looking for a relaxing, upscale base in Johannesburg.
Rooms are big and comfortable. Good breakfast
They make me made a deposit for the charges, instead of charge to the bill to be paid in the check out
We liked pretty much everything. The hotel and rooms were spacious and food was super good. Problem was with staff. Some of the staff were nice and we didn't have any problem.
We felt pressured by giving a tip everywhere we went. I don't mind to give a tip if I like the service or food, but I felt pressured on every step, getting almost chased with empty desks with words "Sir when you are ready" even during a breakfast where I basically took all the food by myself. Also, the number of staff during breakfast, dinners was almost double the actual guests. They were just standing there, talking to each other and coming to the table too much always asking if we need anything (with the desire to get the tip very obviously). It didn't felt natural at all and I felt I'm constantly watched. I don't want to say everyone was like this, but we had experience with at least 4-5 waiters like that. Also in the end we reserved taxi to the airport (luxury shuttle service). Firstly, we've been told it will be 1500RND. Later that day, we found the price tag in the elevator being something like 1050RND for 2 people if I remember correctly. So in the morning I showed reception staff the picture I took from the elevator with their price, receptionist got visibly nervous and started talking to his colleague something we couldn't understand, probably different language. Then he was inputting some numbers repeatedly into the calculator and deleting and inputting, it took like 3 minutes. In the end we were shown price around 1300RND, I asked why is it not 1050 RND when you advertise it. He said there is some extra Ali-pay or whatever pay fee included. We were tired and didnt want to argue in the morning, but I felt very awful after this experience. I think the hotel is super nice oasis otherwise, but this is something you should keep eyes on.
Five star accommodations with extensive spa. The room was luxurious with extra touches like the sliding door between the bedroom and the huge soaking tub. Visited in winter so did not go in the outside pool, but did use the spa services which were wonderful and very affordable. The breakfast was extensive. Ate dinner at the Sky Bar one night and the food was beautifully prepared. Minor issues with the room were addressed right away (toilet was running - turns out that I just needed to jiggle the push button). Felt like a princess with free slippers and turn down service.
Minor things like the sheets were not the softest. I wore a robe over my bathing suit to the outdoor restaurant near the pool which was a no-no.
