About

The newly refurbished Mey Hotel is a 19th-century coaching inn and Visit Scotland award winning hotel just 8 miles from John O'Groats, in the village of Mey. It offers free WiFi in the lounge bar (not high speed broadband but enough for emails etc) and there is free parking on-site. Set in 5 acres of open land, the building is surrounded by beautiful Scottish scenery with extensive routes to enjoy. A variety of seabirds can be spotted around The Mey Hotel, wider local Area and nearby coves to explore along the coast. After seeing the local area, guests can relax in the bar. Other amenities for guests include a lounge with a flagstone fireplace, and you can also admire views of Dunnet Head, the Pentland Firth, and the Orkney Islands. Rooms are newly decorated, with an private bathroom, free toiletries, a flat-screen TV, and tea and coffee making facilities (if you require fresh milk then please bring this with you on arrival). Our hotel is a 200 yr old building. It is not a modern 5 star hotel in a city center. We have limited internet (you are on holiday). Sometimes the weather/climate makes it seem colder, the room are centrally heated and do not have individual controls but we do provide additional blankets and other items. The welcome will be warm and the food will be cooked fresh for you but we also have limited staff and have to know if advance of any requests. allergies , additional requirements. We are a husband and wife team of 2 and provide a personal warm and friendly service. But we are not a city center hotel with unlimited staff and need to work to set timings for breakfasts, dinners, check-ins and checks-outs etc. If any of this is an issue then we would politely ask you to book elsewhere.

    Pros +

    • Very nice location, friendly staff and good food
    • We had a lovely dinner at the Mey, and enjoyed several of their beers. Breakfast was lovely and the serve was second to none. The rooms are to the rear of the Inn and look as if it was the old stables and outhouses. each room opens onto the court yard. the room was superb, with the added detail of Tunnock biscuits.
    • Such a comfy, cozy place with fantastic food. We loved the tartan decor, the hot water bottles and the extra sweet treat when we arrived. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent. Hosts were warm and welcoming. The bedding was so good I didn't want to get out of it in the morning.

    Cons -

    • I am a miserable so and so, and had nothing to moan about!
    • That I had to leave!
    • Nothing at all.

A very comfortable and cosy room - loved the twin Highland Coo hot water bottles! The owner, Ewan, was very knowledgeable and took.the time to have a chat after dinner, which was absolutely delicious, and the chap who served us drinks (sorry, didn't ask his name) was also lovely and chatty. If we are ever back in the area we will definitely stay at The Mey Hotel again.

    Nothing at all.

Lovely Warm welcome on arrival. Toasty fire to enjoy a pre-dinner drink. Spotlessly clean room and fantastic food.

    Absolutely nothing.

We had such a warm welcome at this hotel. Everything was exceptionally clean. The decor is beautiful. The friendly staff treated us as though they were personally welcoming us into their home. Breakfast was freshly cooked and was everything we could have wanted. We even had little highland cow hot water bottles on our bed. This hotel is a definite YES and we'd certainly stay again.

Wonderful room! Nice and clean and enough outlets and near a mirror. The owners, Emma and Euan were fantastic. The food was delicious!! Nice extra blankets.

Some minor issues with heater in room and toilet.

About the only ‘proper’ hotel in the area we needed to be in and it looked ok on its website, however …

Having to choose your breakfast from a limited menu for a particular 15 minute slot.No daily room servicing, despite the usual ‘leave your towels on the floor …’ notice in the bathroom - hots reckons it was mentioned at check-in, but we disagree.Only one easy chair in the bedroom and the other ex-dining room chair very worn (room 9)Miniscule napkin for breakfast, Brakes Bros marmalade in tiny plastic portions. No log fire lit in a chilly evening in the lounge Some lack of attention to detail generally.

Good friendly service and a welcoming environment. A modern clean room. The restaurant has a good choice of delicious food at reasonable prices.

    7ThomasPosted on: 9-16-2025

    Very friendly staff, nice decor

No bin in room, motel type accommodation which meant going outside to get to bar and restaurant

Food was delicious, hosts and staff were excellent, room was tastefully decorated.

Bathroom noise from next room, but that is really a building/insulation issue. It did not spoil our stay.

    10MendezPosted on: 9-9-2025

The owners were so attentive. Family run hotel. Dinner and breakfast very good. They even helped us with a tire issue. Would definitely stay there again.

The couple running it. The comfy bedThe food

Lack of surface space. I felt we had to balance things on time shelves along with tea/coffee things or ornaments etc.

The staff were incredibly accommodating.Able to provide gf/df food for dinner and breakfast. Extremely friendly staff.Beautiful facilities. Gorgeous bedspread and highland coo hot water bottles.Quiet location.

    Thin walls - noisy neighbours

The hosts were excellent, very friendly and the food was delicious. We were made to feel welcome and valued and nothing was too much trouble, a lovely coupleBedroom decor was lovely, with little extras like hot water bottles and biscuits

The bedrooms were beautifully decorated but had very little sound-proofing and we could hear conversations/noise from the next room
