About
In Hay-on-Wye, The Swan at Hay is positioned between the Brecon Beacons and The Black Mountains. It is an independent hotel with 19 individually designed bedrooms and a restaurant serving classic British cuisine. This listed Georgian building was a former coaching inn, and many rooms have large original windows with views across the gardens or stable block. Bedrooms feature flat-screen TVs, tea and coffee trays and private bathrooms. The Swan at Hay has a relaxed bistro and a restaurant serving modern British cuisine with original Georgian windows overlooking the garden and patio. The Swan has 2 bar areas and a dining room, where guests can choose from the different menus available. The well-stocked bar serves award-winning ales and ciders. Hay-on-Wye has a good selection of boutique shops and pubs. It is only a 5-minute walk from the Offa’s Dyke Path and just a short drive from the Brecon Beacons National Park. Free parking is available at The Swan at Hay.

Pros +
- The staff was very kind and helpful. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable.
- Very clean, comfortable and friendly staff
- The hotel was really cozy, the staff were present and attentive. The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. The location was brilliant - right in the village, a stroll from most pubs, and restaurants. (Tina on reception was very friendly!)
Cons -
- The grouting could do with replacing, but the bathroom was very clean otherwise. A little bit tired in places
- The food was not very good. We brought this to their attention.
- We chose the property for on-site parking and its central location. However, parking on site is very limited and we had to park in a council carpark with fees payable outside of 6pm to 8am. There are less than half the number of parking spaces to thenumber of rooms.

Warm rooms and nice bar. Friendly and attentive staff

Central location with a range of facilities. Clean, well appointed rooms. Great choice of food throughout the day. Exceptional breakfast and evening meal. Staff were amazing, went above and beyond and are a credit to the hotel.

Beautiful hotel and location. Very clean and welcoming.
The mattress was broken on the side so no support when you tried to get out of bed. Not a huge amount of choice for breakfast.
The location is excellent. Very close to shops, restaurants etc.
Very overheated. The room and public spaces were tired. A lot of awkward stairs. The room didn’t feel clean. Bathroom very basic - nowhere to put toilet bags except the slightly worn floor.
It was walking distance to everything in Hay. Staff were extremely helpful. Breakfast was really lovely. Free parking. Room was very clean. The only kingsize bed I could locate in Hay and it was comfy!
Bedroom and bathroom were both quite small. No lift, and because it was a January and it was quiet, there were few people around, doors to the hotel were locked at 10 (could still access back of hotel), and therefore no atmosphere. No ones fault, just a fact.
Location, breakfast, cleanliness, friendly staff
Our first room was very small and in the front and we asked to moveOur second room was a decent size, the bathroom was very nice, good hot shower, the furniture in the room was obviously "bespoke" the door on the wardrobe was loose and hanging off, there was no lighting for the area containing the coffee/tea facilities and it was we very dark, also no mirror for my wife to do her makeup Also the bar was closed and we weren't advised on booking
Excellent comfortable room, staff and dinner.
The lighting in the dining room was rather gloomy. The lovely staff did find us a lamp which did improve things but I am sure the lighting would affect people eating there in the evening (particularly non-residents) which is a shame as the food and service from everyone including reception and bar staff was excellent.
The staff were lovely. We bought our dog with us and she got so many biscuits! The room was clean, comfortable and everything worked. We managed to nab a free parking spot, but the hotel's car park is small so there's no guarantee (there's a big pay and display carpark across the road). It's a great location, easy to walk up the high street and down to the river.
Maybe slightly overpriced, but you're paying for the location.
A beautiful building in the centre of Hay on Wye with parking. Comfortable and spotless rooms.
I loved the fact it was very presentable, the staff were friendly and the rooms were spacious with a great view. The staff were all very accommodating and it was such a lovely stay overall.
I would say there wasn’t anything we didnt like about the property - perhaps maybe the parking situation but then that can’t really be helped and we managed to park in their free car park or there was a public one quite close by, but luckily we managed to park into the hotels car park.
Spacious room and clean out the back. Good staff and very good breakfast
Bar and restaurant quiet.
Tired .. needs updating badly, bar area bleak, dirty old furniture no atmosphere at all
Generally needs investment
Excellent location. Warm, clean room. Parking available.
Breakfast could have been better quality. Bathroom door did not close.
Exceptional clean room; helpful and friendly staff; super breakfast.
The parking; but we are stuck with that. Only takes about ten cars and its full.
Location was good and staff most helpful and welcoming
I take into account the age of the property but there were small niggling faults that were not being adressed within the room. If brutally honest I fail to see how room number 7 can be described as a superior room and warrant the very high nightly charge that is applied. Overall the stay was good but the room failed . I am not certain we were given the correct room as description stated a fireplace? Not that we wanted one but it did cast doubts if we had in fact the correct superior room. Placed also on the main road the noise of traffic was very loud.
Friendly staff. Good breakfast.
Initial room was a little dated & in need of a refresh. Asked to change & the room we moved to was much fresher.
