Lovely historic building, very spacious room full of antique furniture. Nice modern bathroom. Staff very good. Nice spa with pool.

Grill restaurant ( James Martin) was ridiculously overpriced.

The chap in the restaurant was fabulous

I don’t like the rolls of carpet and stacked furniture in the corridors

    7ChristinaPosted on: 2-13-2026

    The building. Attentive reception staff.

Issues with evening meal e.g. sevice

    9GillianPosted on: 2-7-2026

Old fashioned , steeped in history , relaxed welcoming atmosphere

    I loved it

The main ground floor areas for comfort were gorgeous, with pleasant of comfy sofas and roaring open fires.

Unfortunately we were placed in the annexe which is heated by a warm air pumped system. This was so noisy we had to move rooms.

Fantastic surroundings and such rich history. Room really comfortable and warm. The Grill Dining room staff were very efficient and food was of very good standard . Breakfast was ok however, the butter was unsalted and black pudding very hard. There should be a choice of both salted and unsalted butter.

The staff in the bar area were not very attentive. We waited a long time to be acknowledged and eventually the receptionist had to go and find a waiter to serve us. Also some of the lunch food items were missing and arrived once we had finished the meal, despite us bringing this to the staff’s attention as soon as the food arrived.

It was beautiful and well kept

Our room was freezing, which spoilt it. We did tell the staff at reception but they told us to use the fan heater which really wasn’t suitable for the size of the room. The actual radiator was not giving out any heat at all.

The location is stunning, the property gorgeous. The rooms are very comfortable

The organisation by staff. Communications errors resulted in our table not be available when requested/confirmed. We had previously communicated and had our table confirmed through here by the duty manager. Which then on arrival was not available. We were told after several minutes this would be dealt with once we had provided proof of the exchange by email. We then were subsequently told a table had become available, which then we arrived at the expected time was then not available again. Poor communication between teams. Bathrooms are dated, we had a continually dropping tap that despite two visits from maintenance could not be fixed. There was no suggestion from staff to switch rooms.

James Grill in hotel was amazing! and the snugs with open fire in the lounge

Our room was too far away from the hotel, following my email to request a change of room requiring access to walk in shower I thought the booking clerk would have put us in a room closer to the main hotel, my husband struggled with his walker to get to our room. Jason the Duty Manager did try to change our room but this wasn’t available

Great location and the staff were very helpful. Historic building in a pretty village. Comfy beds. Clean. Reasonable prices.

Food was very average. Not in line with the other hotels in the Iconic group in terms of overall quality and feel. Very much feels like a continuation of the coaching inn I assume it once was. Annex rooms a bit bigger than pokey main building rooms. Overall feels like it needs some investment but as is obviously popular, maybe won't happen.

We were surprised how large the room was and how comfortable the bed was the bathroom superb. As we booked for a meal in the Grill in the evening we were very pleased with the menu choices and had avery enjoyable meal with wine. Our breakfast in the morning was super with lots to choose from which set us up for the rest of the day.Thank you for making it a most enjoyable experience, and we hope we can visit again soon

Only that we would have loved to stay longer to make use of all the facilities.

    6JacquelinePosted on: 1-24-2026

We liked the back rooms of the hotel reception, breakfast was lovely. Waiting staff at breakfast were very attentive.

Reception staff where not the most welcoming and on booking out we where not asked how our stay had been, no help with bags to the car.

    9AdelePosted on: 1-23-2026

The location and the building was spectacular.

The room and bathroom was a little cold but we found the heater/fan in the room

    10HollyPosted on: 1-18-2026

staff were exceptional. As a woman in my 70's travelling alone, I was shown consideration and help at every turn. Even the young male waiters were lovely offering me magazines to look at as I sat alone at the dinner table.

Honestly I didn't find fault with anything.

    5SandraPosted on: 1-15-2026

Location. Comfort. Quiet despite location. Not allowing non residence customers

Couldn’t get a seat for drinks. Being shoved in another place for breakfast with dogs and children?! No idea what that was about. Unfriendly staff.

    10AthertonPosted on: 1-14-2026

This was for my husbands 60th Birthday the food and hotel were excellent

    6LeannPosted on: 1-11-2026

The setting is beautiful and the staff are exceptional.

It is in dire need of refurbishment. I didn’t expect to pay that kind of money for a bedroom where the shower dripped, the tiles were broken and the room was tatty. The quality of the food is nowhere near as good as it should be. The James Martin brand is misleading.
