About
Built in 1676 as a hunting lodge for King Charles II, the Speech House Hotel has been refurbished to offer modern facilities and luxurious rooms while retaining its period features. The Speech House is located 5 miles from the Wye Valley in the heart of the Forest of Dean. Rooms are set in the main house or in the courtyard, with many offering forest views and some with four-poster beds. All rooms are decorated in a traditional style and have TVs with Freeview and tea and coffee-making facilities. The Verderer’s Court restaurant has beamed ceilings and offers modern European cuisine. The Orangery serves lighter meals and snacks. The Speech House is 10 minutes’ drive from the Dean Forest Steam Railway and the Dean Heritage Center. Chepstow Castle and town center, as well as Gloucester with its historic docks are a 30-minute drive away. Cheltenham is a 40-minute drive from the hotel and there is easy access to the M4 and M5 motorways.

waitress service and bar staff - all young people had very good customer skills, polite and courteous.Breakfast on first day - a good old fashioned 'full English' was great
buffet breakfast on 2nd day1st evening meal in restaurant - trying too hard with menu, presentation of food was good but too many mixtures of flavours/spices hiding taste of true foods. Waiting staff and cleaning staff (room) very polite and helpful.
Very accommodating for our large group who checked in late and left early. Breakfast starts at 7.30am, our group needed to check out early so they very kindly prepared a continental breakfast for us before we departed.
A wonderful and historic country hotel. Food in the Orangery was excellent and the staff throughout our stay, with attentive and friendly.
The staff are amazing, friendly, helpful, professional and pleasant. The food is of a high standard and very tasty. Location is perfect. The family room is spacious and comfortable.
Friendly staff, good breakfasts, cosy bedroom.
Main building was a bit on the cold side though and its decor was tired and rather dated.
Good food, Staff lovely.
The shower temperature was variable and the flow poor. Shower was over bath.
Dinner and Room were spot on, Breakfast there was no beans...
Generally everything with very good
There is a much better atmosphere when you eat in the casual dining area
Having to ask for sauces.Coming down for a later breakfast staff were mainly intent on putting things away, buffet selection of cooked food had gone
Perfect for my nieces’s wedding.Bedroom slightly small for two people but had a lovely time.
See above.
Great location historic building nice bar and restaurants Decent rooms clean and comfortable well equipped Super breakfast
Nothing really to dislike a little pricey perhaps £15 + for breakfast
The history of the hotel is very interesting particularly the Verderers Court (used as the main restaurant) and the location is second to none, right in the depths of the Forest of Dean. The staff were charming and really helpful. The food was really good too.
The bathroom could do with some updating though clean and useable.
Clean rooms, lovely bathrooms very modern I thought i had bed and breakfast but I only.had room only so next time I would check this
I thought as we where room only we might of been offered the option to add breakfast and told a price of this. But apart from that the whole experience was amazing, friendly staff, lovely surroundings and nice rooms xx
Location. At the heart of the forest.
Very low water pressure. Just a trickle. Overall, in need of renovations.
Staff were very nice, food was good in the Orangery and dogs were allowed in there.
The size of the room was tiny. Didn't know there was an extra charge for dogs until after the booking was made. Also it was a long way from Monmouth where we originally wanted and booking .com made out it was very close by.
The history of the property the dining area very nice
Room had cobwebs and no heating or air con .
Fabulous location, really friendly staff, dogs were very welcome and it was great to have a secure field to exercise them.
Was given a small double cottage room, was clean and comfortable with cosy decor. Selection of tea, coffee and biscuits provided were welcome. Great, large walk-in shower room. Breakfast was very good, a good selection of hot and cold self-serve items and some available to be cooked to order. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly, including the lovely night porter who helped me check in fuss-free, after a late evening arrival.
Noise from the road in the cottage rooms was quite loud, although it didn't particularly bother me, there was no aircon, so you have to have the window open at night if it's warm and the desk fan provided was broken. The walls though, are not particularly soundproofed well and sound was very clear coming from neighbouring rooms. The free internet was good but was patchy. Accessibility could also be an issue for some needing to go in the main building rooms upstairs, as there didn't appear to be a lift available (old building though, so understandable it may not be possible to have one). None of these issues affected me greatly, I had a very enjoyable stay and hope to return soon.
