Pros +
- We really enjoyed the comfort of our bedroom. The food was lovely and staff exceptional. We also enjoyed the guitarist who played on Thursday night.
- Great location to all shops restaurants and hiking
- Lovely main building and grounds, the spa was relaxing, beautiful outdoor pool especially if it’s sunny. Breakfast was delicious. Great walks nearby along the cuckmere river. Nice food options in the village too.
Cons -
- The only criticism I have is the buffet breakfast. Much prefer tea and coffee served to us at our table. It just seemed to cheapen the overall service which was otherwise excellent.
- Flooding in the garden and pool area
- We stayed in the Coach House, which I wouldn’t recommend. It’s separate from the man building, next to the road so can be noisy from traffic. We were woken up at 7am every morning by a massive delivery truck outside our window with people moving crates around for an hour. Management was kind though and offered us a partial refund for this. But in future, we will book a room in the main building.

I loved the classic room with private bathroom. The shower was amazing! The bed was super comfortable and the room was spotless! They offer free fruit and have a pantry filled with free chocolate, sweets, biscets and crisp!
Teabags. The teabags does not brew a good cup of tea. This was the only let down as I love a good strong English breakfast tea. Peppermint tea was delicious. Just did not like the Earl Grey tea which was the only tea available.
A beautiful hotel in the heart of the South Downs. It's a gorgeous location. Staff were all very friendly and welcoming. We loved the complimentary 'pour' when we arrived and enjoyed a glass of wine by the fire place, also the 9pm nightcap. The spa facilities are fabulous and we made the most of the outdoor pool and sauna. Dinner was delicious too (albeit it's pricey). The room was comfortable and had everything we needed. We would both very happily return. Buffet breakfast was very tasty and good quality (compared to other UK hotels).
Everything was wonderful. The hotel has been newly redone so there were only one or two very minor details that could be finessed - such as, at breakfast the coffee cups were slightly too small for the amount of coffee that comes out of the machine, some bigger coffee cups are needed! Otherwise, it was hard to fault.
Good location, good renovation of the previous hotel with nice materials, a big improvement. A majority of the staff were helpful.
Our room was above the main door which constantly banged which shook the bed! The hotel said the door stopper thing that is meant to close the door slowly was old and needed replacing..The food was really disappointing. Our meal on the Sunday night was awful. No sourdough bread so cheap white sliced bread given on a dinner sized plate with butter. A dried up, tasteless roast beef with no green veg and horribly fatty roast pork with no crackling, a really poor standard. The breakfasts were also chaotic. Food choice ok but hot food served in large Le Creuset pans with lids which were really heavy and we watched guests really struggling to use them, it was so obviously not working..
Great facilities with the spa sauna and pool so accessible from rooms for hotel guests, great breakfast buffet style with really great options especially the Bircher muesli yoghurt and lots of nuts and seeds, as well as cooked breakfast and continental. Really helpful and friendly staff who often went above and beyond to help. Really loved all the additional touches like wellies available to borrow and the very well organised muck room to leave muddy boots, and the 4pm and 9pm wine/digestif tastings.
It was all great, the only tiny thing could be a greater selection of eg wholemeal/sourdough/rye bread at breakfast?
Location Decor & facillities .
Buffet breakfast . The bacon and scrambled eggs were warm not hot .
Lovely property, recently renovated and the staff were very kind and so helpful. Love the 4pm pour - such a lovely touch. Alfriston nearby is a nice village too.
Pillows were a bit hard!
Cosy little hotel, perfect for a one night get away. Lovely rooms and the little touches made it perfect! Loved raiding the little pantry for a midnight snack.
Breakfast seemed unorganised and a little chaotic, lots of staff running around trying to do a lot of things all at once. Not communicated that the veggie options needed to be order and no mention of a menu to show what was avaliable for cooked veggie breakfasts.
Beautiful location, lovely decor and very friendly staff too Fabulous heated outdoor pool
Would like a proper cosy lounge to sit in as well as the bar area
Cute rooms, nice spa, lovely gardens and great location
Tiny bathroom in the room, spa area a bit too cold for my taste, restaurant experience could have been better and breakfast was average
Location, spa facilities, staff. Lots of good walks. Pet facilities also great.
Could have squeezed in some shelving in our room.
Good location, friendly staff, great food at supper. Good breakfast.
Large double bed seemed quite small. Next time we will book a king size double bed
Lovely facilities, beautiful setting
On arrival the receptionist who checked us in was not particularly friendly and made us feel like an inconvenience. The check-in took a little while (which was our fault, trying to locate PINs for new credit cards however we explained and tried to maintain a friendly atmosphere) and a small queue formed. Perhaps she felt obliged to deal with that but she made a point of saying “are you ok finding your room as I have a queue of people?” Throughout our stay we saw other people check-in and get shown around. We received no info at all regarding standard things such as when and where breakfast would be served, bar, restaurant, etc. We were made to feel like an inconvenience which was a shame and it started our stay on a sour note. Fortunately everyone else we dealt with were more than helpful and friendly.
It was everything I expected but better. From great staff on arrival to the perfect bed to the best breakfast
That I had to leave
Room was beautifully decorated. Spa area was lovely, with gorgeous views. Staff really helpful and friendly.
Breakfast was a little hectic, seemed they needed extra staff as things ran out and there was no one around to ask to replace them.
Great hotel. Fantastic facilities, lovely rooms, great breakfast and great breakfasts.
Very good breakfast; very helpful friendly staff.
Has lost a bit of the charm it had as Deans Place, now a rather "corporate" feel. Disappointing and expensive dinner; wine over-priced.
The staff were so friendly and appeared to enjoy working there. The room was lovely and the general decor of the hotel was really nice. The restaurant was very cosy, a nice place to have breakfast.
The spa was disappointing. The outdoor pool was cold and the sauna also not very hot.
